Funny how this is still going on and on. I guess Joni was talking about this "plagiarism" with regard to songs and music. But what if you think about visual art? Especially the Pop art of the 60's, and even some of the photorealism of a bit later....there are constant, CONSTANT cultural references, that get collected, re-mixed and thrown back out into the arena in some different form and combination of elements. I say: same with music. And Bob is a fantastic collector, re-arranger. I think its just the way his brain works. If you saw his American Masters film, it shows those early clips of him in New York just throwing words together. Its simply a certain way of working. His process is about piecing things together and coming out with something that rings, if not "new"...then maybe just really very interesting (and to me, fascinating) for some reason. I'm one of those people guilty of pretty much only listening to Joni's music up to say "Mingus". (so sue me) But I have to say that with very few exceptions, in her MUSIC, Joni was very, very original. Its hard to see where her roots were. But! what about her PAINTINGS??? she's not so original there, is she? what about all the Van Gogh-ish things? But see, its OK! no need to criticize/lambaste/skewer her - its a cultural reference, people "get it" and it largely amuses/delights us. The thing with Bob's cultural references that he sticks in songs, is that they're sometimes NOT widely recognized things, and so it doesn't hit you in the face that this came from elsewhere. I'm always tickled when I DO recognize a turn of phrase or an image in his songs, that rings a bell. Then it becomes something that Bob and I share. Like, I "got it". For instance, what does he mean by "smell the tail of the dragon" in "Seqor"? And then years later (just recently) I see the same words "tail of the dragon" in either an interview with his son Jakob and T-Bone Burnett talking together, or one of the tunes off Jakob's album....or something. "Tail of the dragon" came up again, only this time somehow related to Jakob and/or T-Bone or something they all know and share. To me, "tail of the dragon" is a long extremely curvy road in Tennessee where motorcyclists go to prove they can, umm, I dunno, make their bike turn. Whatever. Point being those words have unfortunately only that meaning to ME. But "tail of the dragon" must have some other meaning. I doubt if Dylan was referring to that road, in his heavily southwestern flavored song "Seqor". I wonder where he took it from? SMELL the tail of the dragon??? why it's TAIL? what does dragon tail smell like? umm, "ass", perhaps? asbestos, perhaps? so does the ass of a dragon smell a certain way? is it important? LOL!!!!!!! sorry, but it begs these questions, I feel! I'm fairly sure he ripped that phrase from something he heard or read or otherwise experienced. And yet look how it is involving me, silly little me, in his art? I am completely fascinated by the notion of someone saying they can "smell the tail of the dragon" in their song, because its just a really weird thing to say. Why not the tongue of the dragon? Anyway, it provides a jumping-off point for thinking to occur. Joni's songs have provided many of those points, too. But she works differently with her music. I still have this hunch that this whole plagiarism tempest in a teapot was engineered, possibly even with Bob's blessing, over a bunch of laughs and drinks. And look how much its had BOTH their names in the news! So, not a bad thing for Joni, I think. I just hate it that some people with very literal brains will be put off enough to not ever try Dylan on for size and see if the work doesn't in fact provide some really nice brain food. OTOH, he doesn't need more people. The Bob train is pretty full. I need to go listen to "Seqor" again, lol. :P with affection and respect, Em ________________________________ From: Les Irvin To: joni@smoe.org Sent: Fri, May 7, 2010 5:58:56 PM Subject: Joni's comments on Dylan continue to spark debate on the airwaves... http://www.kuow.org/program.php?id=20208 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 May 2010 09:46:18 -0600 From: Kate Johnson Subject: Re: Joni's comments on Dylan continue to spark debate on the airwaves... If Dylan was merely a collage-maker, a magpie running around stealing ideas, it would be easier to write him off, maybe, but he's written tons of excellent songs that don't sound like anything else. Obviously they're original-but when you've written hundreds, sure some of them are influenced by other songs, like Joni's "Silky Veils", and um, a few others. Seems to me, casting aspersions on Dylan's songwriting is going to cost her more than him, in terms of cred.
