The thought provoking conversation has been wonderful. The member of my family who just died in the wee hours of this past Sunday morning..well, I have no idea what kind of funeral they will have. It's a weird thing, when you have spent an entire life loving someone just because the blood bond runs so deep, and whilst that person's absence is not in my every day, I will miss the person all the same. A kind, gentle, loving soul that will be carried in my heart always. And my heart has lots of room now. I love reading all the selections of music and I agree, it is important to plan ahead and make your wishes known. Ive got some of it done (it's just so hard to fathom the reality of my own death. It scares me and makes me sad. I feel a bit bad about what I said about Dave's funeral . It was really beautiful and astounding at how many people were there, especially considering the service was held on a Monday. I think what I meant was that the eulogy didnt dig deeper into who Dave was. The person did a fine job, but me, I would have wanted to stand up there and just tell them all what they already knew anyway .. he was known as the Mayor of the Street as he would be out t here doing his snow or yard work and help anyone else with theirs...oh my goodness, countless things, in countless ways. Aspects of Dave. I'll have a think about some songs that I would like. I would also like musicians there, I have many friends here who are wonderful musicians and that would make me very happy. I would want a celebration after the funeral service, because it does help lift the grief, even a little. Time does not heal those wounds, what time does is teach us how to live with that horrific loss . love, Mags - --- On Wed, 4/28/10, Steve Dulson wrote: From: Steve Dulson Subject: Funeral music (NJC) To: joni@smoe.org Received: Wednesday, April 28, 2010, 10:39 AM Our church advises everyone to plan the service they would like to have, as it takes a burden off the survivors. I was left with that duty, and so I said I had always wanted two songs played at my funeral, and one of them would be good for the slideshow thing. It was Judy Collins' version of the Beatles "In My Life". So, I emailed the song to my sisters and they agreed it was nice and so it was all set. Then, the next day, my sister was over and, weirdly enough, I had a Carly Simon compilation sitting right in front of me, and I said "I should play you the other song I was thinking of" and put on Carly's "Life is Eternal." WELL. The song is playing, and we are sitting on the couch, and, I sh*t you not, my volume on my stereo shoots up from like 8 to 42 or something, and the frigging house is shaking from this song, and nobody was near the stereo, and the remote was sitting, without batter ies, in a drawer in my kitchen. I calmly got up, turned it down, looked at my freaked out sister, and said loudly "ok, so it's Carly then, Mom", and you know, it was the perfect fit. Interesting. I wonder if it's similar to the Lloyd Whitesell book which was kind of a slog, even for a music instructor such as myself. All the analysis in the world, however, doesn't really explain the magic of the synergy between words and music, and the style and cultural zeitgeist that a great artist has flowing through their pen. ie you can learn the chords, annotate all the lyric references, point out the interval contour of the melody and say that a groove is based on an african tradition without actually cracking the nut of what makes great art great. I'll still probably get it though. Love is too strong a thing to ever really die. I was at the home of one of my oldest and dearest friends and the woman who was her partner at that time shortly after Edward died. These 2 women and Eddy's mother were with us when he died. Anyway, at this particular time a clock in Jan & Jen's apartment got stuck at around the time 4:10 or so and it turned out that all 3 of us had been thinking about Edward. 4:10 was about the time he emerged from his dark cocoon, got his gorgeous wings and flew away... Also, Eddy used to joke that he and an old friend of his were able to will streetlights to go on & off. The streetlight across from our house never stays consistently lit during hours of darkness. It goes on and off periodically all during the night. I can't really pinpoint when this started happening but it is a comfort to think he is still watching over me from somewhere...
