Dear Anita and Paul et al, sorry to come in so late on this topic (I am away from home) but I must tell you I WAS AT THAT CONCERT! I have a Barbican membership and booked this concert well in advance. Just as well, because it was a total sell out. I remember they did have another identical concert either the previous or following night in a town further "up North" such as Birmingham or Nottingham. Will look it up when I get home. I also took a leaflet home with me, to have some more details on some of the lesser known singers, again I can look up details and let you know if you want. It was indeed a very good concert. I don't know if the TV programme has been edited (that too I will try to check when I get home!) but I really appreciated when Joe Boyd came on stage rather towards the end of the show, and gave some interesting information, because the singers neither introduced themselves not said anything about their affinity with Nick's music. Especially in the beginning I found that a bit "dry". Maybe the TV programme has some subtitled information? One thing that choked me was when Joe Boyd played a tape recording of Nick Drake's mother playing and singing a self-written song on the piano. The musical genes were so easy to trace! I must agree with you, Lisa Hannigan was great, as was Danny Tompson. First time I saw him, and I was really impressed. One disappointment was Vashti Bunyan, who sang so flat and inaudibly that I wondered who she was and where they had dragged her up from. Then when I caught her name from the programme, I realised this was the singer from the late 60s or early 70s that Joe Boyd had written so enthousiastically about in his autobiography White Bicycles. I know she had a bit of a comeback with her song Just Another Diamond Day, when it was used for a TV commercial, but all I can say is that she did not sparkle at this concert. But maybe for the TV version of the concert, they managed to boost the vocal a bit. There was a great atmosphere in the crowd, a feeling of love and appreciation for having Nick's music being kept alive. There were lots of grey heads, together with young studenty/arty people. It felt really good. I hope to catch the programme again as soon as I get back to England. Pity I can't record it to keep. All the best, Lieve (almost back) in London - ------ Date: Sun, 18 Apr 2010 17:39:12 +0100 From: Paul Castle Subject: Re: The Songs of Nick Drake NJC Anita - Thank you so much for posting about this - I'd completely missed that it was on. Just watched it on the BBC iPlayer - and I'm still right up there! What a truly great concert. Wonderful band and string section held together by double bass player Danny Thompson who, of course, played on many of the original recordings on Five Leaves Left and Bryter Layter. So many sublime moments - Lisa Hannigan singing 'At The Chime Of A City Clock' (Oh, those strings!!) Kirsty Almeida's 'Cello Song' (Oh, that cello line!! - and the cor anglais!) The incredible piano/double bass instrumental version of 'One of These Things First' by Zoe Rahman & Danny Thompson Lisa Hannigan playing harmonium and growling out 'Black Eyed Dog" - absolutely stunning!!! I'm on my feet! 'Day Is Done' by Scott Matthews - love his voice - (his own song 'Boy With A Thorn In His Side' is one of my current favourites) Teddy Thompson's 'River Man' - when the strings first come in - oh my! (Richard and Linda must be so proud - as Teddy says at the beginning, his mother went out with Nick Drake for a while. His father also played electric guitar on the original version of 'Time Has Told Me'. And I defy anyone not to smile along with Teddy Thompson and Krystle Warren when they sing 'Pink Moon' together - this should be released as a single - just brilliant! I see the BBC are showing it again tonight so I plan to record it - and treasure it always. Hi Lieve! How wonderful that you were there at the oncert. It certainly did exceed my expecations. I really envy you at this one, Lieve. And, yes, on the TV programme the singers do talk about their affinity with Nick Drake's music. As For Vashti Bunyan, I think she was probably there because she knew Nick and I think you will be more kindly about her need of an autotune when you see her speak about him. I don't recall the tape of Nick's Mother singing on the TV show, but it was included in the biographical film that followed and she sounded really, really amazing. Including it on the TV tribute would have been extraordinary. Or maybe it was and I drifted off. Anyway, she could certainly write songs. I have recorded the whole thing in high definition, but I haven't yet learned how to burn a dvd, but I'm sure it can't be hard, so I have it if you want it. It's a bit of an oblique Joni reference but given Prince's reverence for Joni there's no doubt that he's using Joni's song title to say that they are growing up.
