Turbulent Indigo is one of those albums I only heard relatively late, and I like it a lot. I also love Night Ride Home - the song, but am not sure I ever heard it with Joni! Next on my list, then... The trouble with buying new Joni albums is that I can never play any of them for as many times as I played an album like Hejira. I don't know what happened, I must have spent a lot of time at home when I was younger...! Ah well. Looking through Rick's bio/publicity material - he was (and still is) a member of Pied Pumkin, a legendary (in the Canadian folk world, at least) band with Shari Ulrich and Joe Mock - I noticed a brief mention about being picked up by Joni when he was hitch-hiking up the Sechelt coast. Here's a website for Pied Pumkin (the spelling is correct for their group name, in case anyone's wondering - no P in the middle.) The bio page mentions, among other things, a CD of dulcimer lullabies by Rick Scott: http://www.piedpumkin.com/biography.shtml Here's a nice clip of the trio in Vancouver in 2007: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prOrHHGv8Zk That part of the world (Vancouver Island and the Sunshine coast) is probably one of the prettiest places I've ever seen and, once you've seen it, you'll understand why Joni's neighbour is quoted in "This Place," saying: "When I get to heaven, if it's not like this, I'll just hop a cloud and I'm coming right back down here Back to this heavenly bliss." Hi Bene, That's the first I've heard that story, or even of this song. Wikipedia also another Joni story of the recording of the song: Joni Mitchell later spoke to writer Iain Blair about the recording experience: "I know it sounds ridiculous, but I was literally starving when we did the session 'cuz my yoga teacher had sent me to a psychic dietician who, while rubbing her chin and swinging her arm around in a circle, had diagnosed a lot of food allergies. The result was, predictably, that I was hardly allowed to eat anything, so by the time I arrived with an apple and a rice patty, my poor stomach was making all these strange noises. Then we get in the studio, and the engineer says he can't record 'cuz he's picking up some weird rumbling sound coming from my direction. (She laughs). And it was all pretty ironic, considering the subject matter." *Chicago Tribune*, May 1, 1985. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tears_Are_Not_Enough Mini-documentary and music video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_5ISeBOv1k&NR=1 - -Corey On Wed, Apr 14, 2010 at 2:17 AM, B Lux wrote: > Hey there - I just played the Northern Lights video clip to my man Jim > - he read a book about Bryan Adams and seems to remember that there > was a story about Bryan coming over to Joni, during that recording, > and telling her how to sing her line, which apparently she did not > appreciate. It's one of the best, and most (imho) perhaps most stunning of all of Joni's songs (Sex Kills and No Apologees are contenders in my book, too). I still remember my OMG reaction to "And he yanks her to her knees." Thinking about this reminds me that I had a question in my mind that I've never resolved to my satisfaction: *Why* are the cops on the beat after Cherokee Louise? Merely for running away, or did CL take some action against the creep? Not really important, I know... And I hope no one takes offense if I say that while I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Ani DiFranco is happily married and has a kid, I would somehow have thought she'd have married a woman. As well, if the adult is white and the kid is aboriginal, and if she has been in trouble with the law before, then odds are, they'd take his word for it. Maybe not so much these days, but fifty years ago? I think Joni told a story about it once, that Louise had been in and out of reform school, but she doesn't get into much more detail than that. ________________________________ From: Walt Breen To: Jonilist Digest Sent: Wed, April 14, 2010 11:04:36 PM Subject: Odds and Ends Thinking about this reminds me that I had a question in my mind that I've never resolved to my satisfaction: *Why* are the cops on the beat after Cherokee Louise?
