I too have wondered what that ubiquitous BBC mic was that I saw everyone use on Top of the Pops. You could add Procol Harum's "Whiter Shade of Pale" from 1967 to your Youtube collection. I guess they didn't really have boom mic stands back then so the "swan neck" and various extension tube add-ons had to be used depending on if the player was seated at a keyboard or standing playing guitar. Gear geek talk consists of a lot of emperor's new clothes mostly. For example you can plough through reams of pages discussing the tonal properties of different guitar cable when every guitarist knows your choice of pick affects your tone 100x more. That sort of thing. But it is fun to learn about how certain sounds we grew up with were captured. Retro and lo-fi are in these days and it's useful to learn about how to grease up the sound now that we've got all this damn pristine digital audio! I spent quite a bit of time trying to make Safaris to the Heart as "Analog Tape" sounding as possible, ironically, and deliberately left in some slop in the tracks, having grown tired lately of "perfected" records. Done right, I think a record has more "heart" that way and certainly sounds more like players actually playing, which on our record was the case anyway. Engineers also made their own screens out of a coathanger (or an embroidery hoop) and a nylon stocking before some enterprising soul started marketing the ones we know and love.
