I recently discovered British folk rock singer, Kate Rusby via the wonderful Jennifer Saunders comedy, Jam & Jerusalem. I went in search of the theme song, a cover of The Kinks', The Village Green Preservation Society. I soon found out that she has quite a history and back catalogue. I think she must be a particular favourite of Saunder because her music is featured all through the series and even appears in the final episode of season 2. I now have four of her albums but I was wondering if she had ever recorded a Joni song. Season 3 has recently aired in the UK and I have been catching up. To my delight, the final episode starts off with Kate singing, Both Sides, Now. The sad part is that Jam & Jerusalem has now been cancelled. It was a very clever and heart warming show. She has one of the prettiest voices I've ever heard. Coincidentally, I was lucky enough to see her here in Toronto last week. I understand she's afraid of flying (even has an album called 'The girl who wouldn't fly') but somehow she was convinced to come to Canada. Her singing is beautiful, but she also tells very funny stories in between songs. ________________________________ From: Mark-Leon Thorne To: jonipeople LIST Sent: Mon, March 22, 2010 5:56:09 AM Subject: Both Sides of Jam & Jerusalem Hello all. Hi Willie and Walt, I LOVED your posts!! In biology, one of the requirements for something to be classified as alive is that it is irritable. Poke a planarian, and it moves. Then there is the question, "will the living evolve or become extinct?" If we remove all of the irritants in life, the brain and muscles start to atrophy from lack of use of the sensory and motor systems. The body's response to irritants is the stress response. Stress is a good thing evolutionarily. It weeds out the weak and strengthens the strong. Stress builds the minds and bodies of the fittest rather than breaking them down. But it can be a fine line between evolution and extinction in the process. The fittest, like Joni, are those who survive irritants by adapting. They develop ways to use the stress of irritants to do great things like voice opinions even at the risk of being unpopular for doing so... daring to be different. Stress can never be removed from life no matter how hard we might try to do so with technology, etc. New stresses always arise. If there was no stress in life, there would be no evolution; there would be no falling in love and procreating. If there was no Willie who dares to be different, there would be no enlightening post like Walt's below. Thanks for your evolving posts Willie and Walt. You make this list worth reading. Love, Laura Walt's post: After I got over my initial suerprise over Willie's apparent rancor, I gave his comments some thought: 1. Have you ever loved anyone more than yourself?>> Joni has admitted to a substantial amount of navel-gazing and thinking about love and her relationship history: Maybe I've never really really loved I guess that is the truth I've spent my whole life in clouds At icy altitudes And her herart is full and hollow Like a cactus tree Why do I keep moving From man to man to man But it seems unlikely that she's never really loved: I'm a lucky girl I've found my friend I love the man beside me We love the open road and many others <<2. If you say that you believe in a God, why do you disgrace Him?>> At themoment, I can't think of and specific lyric in which she states definitively that she does believe in God, though Jesus, and God in a number of forms, appear in several song: I am up a sycamore Looking through the leaves A Sinner of some position Who in the world can this heart-healer be, This magical physician? In Job's Sad Lament, she pleads with the "silent watchers" to leave her in peace: What have I done to you That you make everythin I dread And everything I fear Come true Although here and in most of the songs that mention The Big Guy, she's either in character (the two foregoing lyrics), or quoting from literature or from the bible itself. I've always thought she was a secular humanist. In any event, how has she disgraced herself? (The question is sincere: I'm curious as to which actions or statements on her part that you're referring to.) <<3. After your failed attempted suicide over the little affair with Jackson Browne, what's stopping you now?>> Ignoring the poor taste of the question for the moment, I admit I was unaware that J. had ever attempted suicide, but a simple answer is that although she grumbles about the state of the world, who doesn't? Who hasn't had a "Hell inb a handbasket" moment? In the meantime, illness aside, she seems pretty happy with her family, a good reason not to commit suicide. I take suicide seriously -- two of my exes made that irreversable choice, as have a number of friends, over the years. I guess it's a personal decision. Joni's only human, and if she did attempt it way back then, and possibly contemplated it other times since, I'm glad she made the decision to live. I hope everything's okay at your end Willie. That was a pretty dark posting. Best, Walt ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Mar 2010 15:06:53 +0000 From: Anita G Subject: Re: And we call for the three great irritants... Hi Laura There is much truth in what you say regarding stress, iriitants, evolution and folk daring to be different. It's just hard when daring to be different feels so hurtful. I felt hurt by Willie's post - and I'm okay. Good wishes Anita. The plan is to release a 3 CD set and a DVD by Xmas. As you may know, Joni sang as a guest at their L.A. show. No word on her inclusion. Nash also said that Neil Young expressed interest in doing a new album with the guys. James Taylor and Carole King will be releasing a two disc CD/DVD, "Live at The Troubadour" from their November show at the Hollywood club. Release is set for May 4. English singer-songwriter Lesley Duncan ("Love Song") has died at age 66 of cerebrovascular disease. The latest release from the Jimi Hendrix estate, "Valleys of Neptune" entered the Billboard charts at #4. The CD features 12 unreleased "live in the studio" tracks from 1969, at a time when Jimi was transitioning away from his original Experience lineup.
