Just when you think that you are in control of your computer, suddenly, like a stubborn donkey, the system bucks and goes "Nah!" I too have downloaded covers and put them on my iTunes before, but recently I just get an "incorrect command" error message when I try to play them. Then I just tried again, I can't even tell which right-clicks and options I took, but hey, for some obscure reason, the donkey liked that particular carrot and played the songs, in a totally different order from what Bob had put them in. I wish I could say I had learned something in the process, but no - except patience, I suppose... At least, I can if I open them up in a program that plays wma files. I have a program called Switch that's supposed to be able to convert files but, every time I try to convert these, the program shuts down. If I want to burn them onto a CD, I need to be able to open them in I-tunes, and it's not allowing me to play them because they're wma, I guess. (My computer is a Mac.) So, while I don't think there's anything wrong with the files, does anyone have any idea how to convert them somehow so I can play them on I-tunes and burn them onto a disc? I swear I've been able to do this before. It's one of those things about computers that make a person go nuts. ________________________________ From: Lieve Reckers To: jonilist JMDL ; scjoniguy@yahoo.com Sent: Thu, March 11, 2010 4:29:22 PM Subject: Re: Covers 122 still open for downloading Hi Bob! I'm so glad you sent us a reminder of the Covers 122. I had downloaded it at the time, but couldn't get it to play, and was too annoyed with my own technical inadequacy to ask for help. So anyway this time I tried again, and it worked. I can only think that I must have lost some computer gremlins since. For some inexplicable reason, I get the songs in a completely different order now, but that's a small price to pay! ________________________________ Yahoo! Mark in Sydney ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Mar 2010 08:10:50 -0500 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: Re: NJC American Idol - the Guys & Goodbyes OK, so I watched the guys as well as the results of the voting last night, so I KNOW how it's going to go. And I was 0-2 on the ladies but it doesn't really matter. Katelyn was on the bubble anyway, I was really shocked that Lilly went before Katie or especially Paige who has NO wow factor, but I suppose you can never tell how the kids with cellphones are going to vote and the criteria that people go by can be very different than my own. Anyway, on to the guys: Michael "Big Mike" Lynche: First, let's dispense with the obvious - Big Mike is an undeniable powerhouse. He brings his A game every time and his take on "This Woman's Work" was indeed mesmerizing. But his charisma, his genuine nice-guy goodness, and his teddy bear persona are just undeniable. Lee Dewyze: Did "Fireflies" - he'll not win, but he has a great MOR rocker look and a voice to match. He might just have a career ahead of him. Casey James: Did "You'll Think Of Me" - forgettable, but a smart move for him. Play it safe, he knew he was going to make this cut, and he could afford to sandbag and step it up when he needs to, unlike Andrew who peaked early and can't recapture the mojo. Andrew Garcia: Did "Genie In A Bottle" - liked the guitar, the vocal not so much. Plus the word "Idol" should not be associated with someone who has a neck tattoo. No. I was betting he'd get axed, again, I was wrong. Is he skewing the hispanic teenybopper contingency? Aaron Kelly: Did "Already There" - have to admit that he really sang this song well. To me he's the male equivalent of Katie, a talented kid who needs some more seasoning, training and confidence that comes with time. But the voters had their say, and he's sticking around. Todrick Hall: Did "Somebody To Love" - my favorite performance of the week. Unfortunately, Todrick was branded as a "dancer who sings" early on and even though he showed himself to be an electric vocal stylist with this one, turning it into a soul-gospel raveup (Queen songs are NOT easy to do), he couldn't beat the rep. A real shame, because he is SO more talented than about 4 of the 6 guys who are sticking. Tim Urban: Did "Hallelujah" - I'm with Mark in saying that this song is officially overdone. Having said that, this was Tim's finest performance by a long shot. He came off looking like a singer and not just a guy from the football team in a high school talent show. The girls with the cell phones must like him a lot. Alex Lambert: Did "Trouble" - I'm not familiar with the song but he sounded OK, didn't do anything to distinguish this one from his other songs and he always seems SO nervous. Indeed, when he got cut he totally broke down into a puddle of tearful goo. So I thought Andrew and Alex or Andrew & Aaron would go. Only got 1 right out of 4, then again it's an understatement to say that my musical tastes are not parallel with the cell phone generation's. Other comments - I enjoyed the opening group sing and thought it VERY interesting that they paired up Big Mike and Crystal - foreshadowing perhaps? The former Idols that did Billy Joel's "Tell Her About It" were just plain creepy and phony. Thanks heavens for Tivo, we were fast-forwarding after about 30 seconds of that pap. She was just devastated and unable to regain her emotions. Something there going on more than meets the (tearful) eye, that's for sure. Then again, I'm sure that a lot of these folks bond pretty heavily with this experience and the emotion is just an expression of that. As for Crystal, I just think she sees through the whole BS of the set-up of the show. She knows she's good and she's exploiting the concept to get herself some exposure and maybe a record deal to give herself and her family a better life. It's like she's tolerating it and keeping her eye on her goal. And I don't mean any of that in a bady way. And I REALLY can't wait to hear what HER songs sound like. She can sing and play, can she compose on the same level? As for Todrick, I'm reminded of Jennifer Hudson who finished seventh and went on to win an Oscar for her performance in a major musical. Plus, he just seems so genuinely likeable. And next week I have to sit through another performance by Paige and Katie? Say it ain't so. Good luck with the renovations. We did a kitchen a couple months ago so I know about living in a portion of your house. We have a Sony HD LCD TV and a Blu-Ray player. Some of the Blu-Ray movies we've bought are amazing in this format. I think Blu-Ray is definitely worth the money if you have an HDTV. I think I have a VHS of the TNT tribute somewhere. Unfortunately, we don't have a VHS player anymore. Once DVDs came in, I went crazy collecting them and now it's Blu-Ray. I recently bought and watched the Criterion Collection's Blu-Ray, completely re-mastered version of 'Howard's End' and it is gorgeous. One of the best movies ever made, imo, and it looks almost like it did in a movie theater. From what I have read, some of the earlier 3-strip Technicolor movies ('The Wizard of Oz', 'Gone With the Wind', etc.) look even sharper in re-mastered Blu-Ray technology. The digital re-mastering can match up the 3 film elements that made Technicolor possible even better than the technology available at the time the movies were made could do it. So you actually get a sharper picture. I would love to have a DVD version of the TNT Tribute. And I agree that Cyndi Lauper's rendition of 'Carey' was one of the highlights of the show, eclipsed only, perhaps by Richard Thompson's guitar playing and certainly by Siquomb herself breaking hearts at the end with her rendition of 'Both Sides Now'. Didn't Susan Sarandon do one of the verbal tributes? I seem to remember Joni saying something like 'I don't know what to say. Susan, tell me what I feel!' when she got to the stage.
