He was even so arrogant as to say he (or "we") would solve the problem of waste disposal, which has been around since forever. We are energy junkies, breeding ourselves into oblivion, but creating toxic waste that lasts 100,000 years is not a solution. And nukes don't even make sense economically, which is why the government has to underwrite them-private companies won't touch them. The liability for a possible accident is unthinkable, plus the plants have a limited shelflife, then the spent rods have to be cooled for decades. There are 200 such cooling pools in the US already-we have one not far from here in N. Calif. There is probably one not far from you. And of course, some types of reactors create weapons-grade materials as a by-product. And reactors are a great terrorist target. The 8 billion would have been better spent developing the very significant recent breakthroughs in solar technology, such as this (solar cell efficiency leaps from 25% to 90% & far cheaper to make). http://tinyurl.com/yghnl52 Wind energy is also happening in a big way. By pruning the military, the largest user of energy, and building massive condom factories, we could save plenty of energy now and in the future. I always watch it and loved Fantasia the best in the US! The boys are on here tonight, so haven't seen them yet this week. For the lasses, Crystal was very good this week. I did think till now that she was over rated. I've seen lots of women as good as her at club nights in our local, but she really stepped it up and let rip when I saw the show last night. She's looking stronger as the time goes by and I think she might really start going places. Lilly has something quirky that's interesting but whether she can go the distance, I don't know. She's often 'pitchy' as they put it, but yes, she is interesting and so far has done some neat arrangements that sound very 'her.' There is a bit of Cerys Matthews in her, for me. I loved Siobhan from the beginning and think she could be utterly fantastic, but I think she might lose her way in trying to win the competition and not trusting herself and what she has. Unlike everyone else, I didn't like her take on Aretha much last week. The big note swung it for everyone but me. All this stuff from the judges about 'Make the song your own' and when they do then 'The song was way too biug for you' or 'What you did didn't work' I think might throw Siobhan off. You have be strong to take that one the nose and still remain true under that type of pressure week in week out. Adam Lambert was probably the king of trying things out, some of which worked and some of which didn't - but he still plugged happily away. I really liked Siobhan first week when she did 'Wicked Game' - but Simon didn't like it so she comes out all bubbly the following week. I think she might just lose what she has by trying to win. I'd like her to feel confident in staying with her darkness and trust her judgement in that and see where it leads her, rather than doing happy clappy. I thought Didi has been awful, yet really pulled it off with Rhiannon this week. The rest I have forgotten. I also find that I so prefer all the artists in their own clothes. These awful make overs they do rob them of their personalities. Siobhan looked great in her shorts and T shirts but, Lord, those frocks they put her in. Or is it just my dyke take on clothes? I thought Jermaine was the best male singer, but was so far up himself he just didn't where to stop. I was glad America booted him out and will allow God to lead Jermaine wherever. None of the guys strike me as particularly different - but Big Mike can certainly sing and I think Todrick will improve and could do well. It's interesting that the singers who do the mega vocal runs are not doing so well. Randy keeps asking to hear the melody line. Five years ago vocal runs would be winning the judges over. I have a sense that the Mariah school of singing days are over and people are looking for discernment in the use of voices. Maybe folk are a bit bored with it all. I reckon the X Factor may be coming your way to take over from American Idol. The X Factor has over 28 and group slots, as well as pitting the judges against each other as they mentor the boys, the girls, the groups and the over 28s. It's a better show. As for a Joni week. Well, I can't ever see that happening. But goodness, what a choice those artists would have. Personally, those girls could do some interesting takes on Joni. But only in my dreams, I expect! I watched the ladies last night and will watch the guys later tonight, as well as watching the axe fall on 4 more of them. My take: Katie Stevens: Did a Kelly Clarkson song and failed to sell it. She's just a kid and she's letting the judges dictate what to do instead of following her gut which understandably hasn't matured yet. I was hoping to see her do a slower jazzy thing but they kept saying to go younger so there you go. I think she gets cut. Katelyn Epperly: Did "I Feel The Earth Move", was playing a keyboard which restricted the vocal - she's got a sexy look but wasn't able to project any heat. But good enough to linger for the next round. Paige Miles: Did "Smile" and was just dreadful. I was thinking she was holding back but it looks like that's not the case. I'll give her credit for not trying to cast herself in the mold of a Mariah-Beyonce wannabe, but her performances have not been good. She'll say buh-bye for sure this week, bet on it. Lacey Brown: Did Brandi Carlile's "The Story", and was better than her usual mediocrity. Still, she looks like a fabricated person; goofy spiked red hair, green fingernails, so much makeup you can't tell what she really looks like. She'll make it to next week I think but not much farther. This was the best she's got and it's not enough. Did Benami: Did "Rhiannon" and surprised everyone. Last week she got shredded and could have thrown in the towel but instead she delivers a very heartfelt version of this lovely song and even sings it so you can understand the lyrics which Stevie Nicks could never do. And she is undeniably gorgeous without being arrogant about it and that's a positive. May be more there than she's been showing and if you're going to peak now is the time to do it. Crystal Bowersox: Did Tracy Chapman's "Gimme One Reason" and rocked it. It's pretty obvious that she's played it many times in subways, bars and street corners. She has so much self-confidence yet so much honest humility, she doesn't really give a hoot what the judges say, she's going to be what she is and do what she does. And she's got a stack of originals in her pocket, I'm already lining up to get her CD. Siobhan Magnus: Did "House Of The Rising Sun", which could have been tired except that she took it from acapella to ballad to mid-tempo rocker all in about 60 seconds. She is exciting to watch, has very sexy wild-girl-next-door looks and genuine talent. She's a glassblower and I'm betting she has a pretty good bong collection. Lilly Scott: Did "I Fall To Pieces" and I thought it would be disastrous to take on a Patsy Cline classic but just like Sam Cooke she made it her own. She's also got a good wow factor, I'd like to see her tone down the eye makeup a bit but like Crystal she really seems comfortable in her own skin - has the look, has the chops. So there you go - I think Katie and Paige are gone after tonight and that we'll see Katie again with a bit more seasoning in her demeanor and voice next time round. Guys and decisions tonight. GREAT round up of the girls, Bob. My only, tiny comment about Crystal's performance, whom I have loved from the beginning, is that the judges are going to eventually ask her to perform without the guitar. She seems to be using it as a crutch, and this would definitely have been the song she could have wowed without it. Can't wait to read your JMDL Does Idol column on the men! Now THAT would be interesting! > > lots of love, > Anne > Anne, in the UK several years ago there was a show called Fame Academy in which aspiring singers/musicians/songwriters were taken and coached in a 'school' and sang once a week in an Idol type show and then, I think, the tutors booted them off. I think the final show viewers voted, but I can't quite remember. However, the participants did get to write for themselves and for each other. The winner, David Sneddon, did have a number hit with his own song. The students came up with some cracking tunes. Sneddon disappeared after that, but one major artist to emerge and I think maybe known in the US is r n' b singer/songwriter Lemar. He didn't win, but made the final cut and has had a great career. Winning competitions can be the kiss of death. I myself won the Melody Maker (UK music paper) Rock 1980 competition with my band The Crew. It was brilliant in some ways because at least I got to play the Marquee Club in Wardour Street which was the venue for the semi-finals. When we won, we had a prize of a one single deal with EMI and a #1000. We bought ourselves coloured leather jackets with our money (mine was red, I still have it but I'm too fat to zip it up now) and the single, a song I wrote called, 'Josie' bombed. I was glad because the producers made it sound nothing like it should. All pathos gone, it sounded like a happy clappy poppy tune. Nothing like the earnest intensity Anita The Artist intended. That's why I say 'American Idol Siobhan - if you're out there, stay true! Don't let them mould you and lose who you are!" :~) And, Mr Muller, I love your reviews. I'm so glad you sent us a reminder of the Covers 122. I had downloaded it at the time, but couldn't get it to play, and was too annoyed with my own technical inadequacy to ask for help. So anyway this time I tried again, and it worked. I can only think that I must have lost some computer gremlins since. For some inexplicable reason, I get the songs in a completely different order now, but that's a small price to pay! I hope you don't mind that I have pasted your original comments back in, but I think it helps for anyone who may want to give it a listen now. Just a few quick reactions from me. I think there's a lot of good numbers here. My favourites are your numbers 1, 2, 3 (I so hope they'll do a full version one day), 4 (once I got past the Italian accent), 8, 9 (to my surprise, because I'm not really into country) and 12. Just a quick note about Will Young, your number 19. He was, as you said, the first ever winner of Simon Cowell's Pop Idol, the fore-runner to the X Factor. I have never cared so much about any other singer on one of those talent shows as Will Young. He was so obviously talented, an intelligent and gentle guy with a really beautiful soulful voice. I was delighted that he won, and he has since carved out a good career for himself, doing "his own thing" musically and not being anybody's puppet, and even doing some decent acting in between the singing. But I am disappointed by his "Help Me" cover. I don't think it shows off either his voice or the song at their best. It's indeed a very poppy version, while he can do jazz and soul so well. And sounding like George Michael is, to my ears, not the best compliment for his voice either, since I think his voice normally has a deeper, richer timbre. Anyway, thanks Bob for all your great finds! Lieve in London - ---------------- Bob's original comments 1. Alyssa Wright - Both Sides Now: A mournful 2007 cello version of the franchise kicks things off. I find this one to be quite wonderful and passionate. Alyssa is a singer-songwriter and cellist from Ontario. 2. Butterbean Jazz Quartet - My Old Man: Love this one, a cool swinging jazz take on a seldom-done song from Blue. The vocals are nice, there are some interesting tempo changes and the trio is tight and loose at the same time. This fresh track comes from the band's self-titled 2009 album. 3. Refuge Trio - Refuge Of The Roads: When I heard about this track, I got all excited - then I got it and was very disappointed because it only runs about a minute and is only the first verse. Now, if someone could do the entire song in a minute, that might be something. The Refuge Trio (who coincidentally took their name from this song) is the brainchild of Theo Bleckmann, a very inventive NYC musician/performer who appeared at Wall-To-Wall Joni and has also released covers of "Sunny Sunday" and "Shadows And Light" (as part of the group Moss). He definitely likes the deep tracks and always brings a unique voice and approach to Joni's music. 4. Nicky Nicolai E Stefano Di Battista - River: Italy brings us this duo; Nicky sings and Stefano tickles the ivories. There are some other nice musical colors to be found here as well. 5. Ronan Keating - Both Sides Now: Hailing from Ireland, Ronan is an ex-member of the band Boyzone and has since struck out on his own as a singer-songwriter. He's since recorded and released a cover of "River" so we'll be on the lookout for that. This one comes from his "Songs For My Mother" release of last year and is certainly enjoyable. 6. Motel Westcoast - Big Yellow Taxi: 7. Motel Westcoast - Woodstock: This Dutch band, a composite of many separate solo performers, recreates songs from the Classic Rock era as a side gig. Their two Joni covers are from their 2007 release and both stay pretty close to the originals - well, the CSNY original to be specific in the case of Woodstock. 8. Aeon - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: From 1998, this cover is wrapped around a slow-funk rhythm, and woven into it are some wah-wah guitar and a lazy vocal. Don't know much about the band, but it doesn't take anything away from the enjoyability of the track which clock in at around 6 minutes, one of the longer ones on this volume. 9. Michelle Branch - A Case Of You: One of the more high-profile Joni covers of recent times. Grammy-winner Branch included this track on the 2009 compilation "A Revolution In Sound" where they took pop artists from today and had them cover songs of yesteryear. Michelle's a bit of a country-western artist and brings that flavor to her cover of ACOY. 10. Don Troxell - Both Sides Now: This piano instrumental from Dan Troxell comes from his 2003 release; he is very prolific (as well as skilled) and plays in a romantic and efficient style. 11. Jiros Tojyo - The Circle Game: From Japan, this version some pizzicato strings and some other cheesy flourishes. 12. Kathy Moore - Woodstock: Michigander Kathy Moore is a voice teacher and music therapist. This 2007 cover of Woodstock features some nice tribal percussion and lots of other original touches. 13. Cold War Kids - All I Want: This unreleased performance was featured on AOL Spinner and wasn't officially released. The vocal is a little raw and flat at times, and veers into hard-to-listen-to territory. My son has a couple CWK CD's; they're a fairly well-known indie band from California. 14. Anki - Olen Paivan Peili Ja Viikon Saa (You Turn Me On, I'm A Radio/Finnish): Dating back to 1973, this is one of the older recordings in the set. I never thought I'd get to hear this one but thanks to its re-release on a boxset it is now readily available. She also covered "Chelsea Morning" and I'm still on the prowl for that one. As the title says, this is in Finnish and is a straightforward of Joni's original. 15. Illauna Zauderer Parker - A Case Of You: Illana is a San Fransisco cabaret singer, she won "Best Broadway Female Vocalist" in Bay-area competition back in 2000 and has performed in many shows since, bot in SF and also on and off-Broadway. This pleasant read of ACOY comes from her 2008 release "Hot In Here". 16. Julio Martini - Both Sides Now: This one goes back 20 years - it's an elevator muzaky version with lots of strings, not awful but nothing too terrific either. 17. Richard Taylor - Big Yellow Taxi: Don't know much about Richard, but this track comes from his self-titled album of 2009. It's a slightly-embellished remake of the Counting Crows interpretation, it does feature some nice acoustic guitar work. 18. Penny Davies & Roger Ilott - The Circle Game: A straighforward read from their 2009 album "Moon Caller". Very pleasant guitar and harmonies. Penny & Roger are from Australia and play folk festivals all over the country. 19. Will Young - Help Me: British singer Will Young was the winner of 2002's "Pop Idol" competition. This live track, a bonus track on a CD-single he released in 2009, is fresh and poppy, George Michael-ish. 20. Michael Clay - River: Born and bred in Texas, Michael took his talents to Nashville and was with the Grand Ole Opry for a while - now he lives and performs in Austin. He definitely brings his country sensibilities to River, and interesting choice for a cowboy unless you're talkin' about one a them Brokeback Mountain cowboys. 21. Jill Kirkland - Both Sides Now: Not saving the best for last, this 1969 recording is a charming, warbly little thing. Can't tell you much about Jill; obviously this record did not vault her to stardom. - --------- Date: Wed, 10 Mar 2010 16:22:03 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Covers 122 still open for downloading Just in case you're interested but missed the original post: http://tinyurl.com/ye6n8rk The link is good until the 15th. And I thought her take on Patsy Cline was dreadful. So, like Randy says, "I didn't get it." Thinking about artists from Joni's generation - I'm thinking that Jackson Brown might be the only one who would have done ok on Idol. Joni would have to have worn the fake eyelashes and mini skirts from her earliest days. Even then, I don't think she would have won, sadly. What I'd really like to see is a songwriting contest - write a new song a week and present it... Now THAT would be interesting! lots of love, Anne ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 2010 15:34:10 -0800 (PST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Covers 122 still open for downloading uh, since you mentioned it, I can't play them either. At least, I can if I open them up in a program that plays wma files. I have a program called Switch that's supposed to be able to convert files but, every time I try to convert these, the program shuts down. If I want to burn them onto a CD, I need to be able to open them in I-tunes, and it's not allowing me to play them because they're wma, I guess. (My computer is a Mac.) So, while I don't think there's anything wrong with the files, does anyone have any idea how to convert them somehow so I can play them on I-tunes and burn them onto a disc? I swear I've been able to do this before. It's one of those things about computers that make a person go nuts. ________________________________ From: Lieve Reckers To: jonilist JMDL ; scjoniguy@yahoo.com Sent: Thu, March 11, 2010 4:29:22 PM Subject: Re: Covers 122 still open for downloading Hi Bob! __________________________________________________________________ Yahoo! Thanks to my Bro Bob Muller, I have a commercial-free dvd copy of the Tribute, in addition to my own off-air VHS copy. Needless to say, the digital copy is soooo much better and much more easily duplicated for personal use. The folder containing the files is a bit over 3 GB, so those of you who have a 4 GB (or larger) USB thumb drive or DVD+R or DVD-R and want a copy of this 92 minute masterpiece, please email me offlist to make arrangements. And I haven't seen any of the guys yet. I agree with Anne--Shiobhan and Crystal are the only two of the women who should remain standing. What really prompted me to join the discussion (when I should be working!) is Lilly. Good lord, girl, go get some voice lessons and learn how to breathe from the diaphragm, how *not* to pop all your p's, and develop your upper range. When she made that transition at the end of "I Fall to Pieces" from chest voice into head voice, trying to hit a higher note (she did the same thing in her butchering of "A Change Is Gonna Come," unforgiveably), I felt like someone was poking me in the ear with a sharp stick. AAAAGGGHHHH! And due to lack of breath control (at this point, I don't think it's nerves--it's sheer lack of technique), she sounds like she's in the water gasping for air, resulting in pitch problems. She had me (not in a good way) from that first wavery "I." Awful. I couldn't believe the judges' reactions--I was waiting for Simon to excoriate her, not only for the performance but for the choice of song. But then, as others have noted, the judging is always inconsistent. And Randy, I don't care who you've produced or how much money you've made, there is no such word as "pitchy." You can be sharp or flat, or off pitch, or lacking in intonation entirely, but "pitchy" is just something you made up, and it sounds ridiculous. (And it'll probably be in the next revision of Webster's dictionary, alas.) As I type this, they've just moved Paige on to the next round. Again, I haven't seen all of her performances, but based on this weeks' alone, she should be gone. ---Can't wait to hear what Shiobhan and Crystal do next. Travis really likes American Idol and watches it whenever it's on. So I hear and see bits and pieces of it. I happened to be in the next room from where the television was on the other night when Lilly sang 'I Fall to Pieces'. First of all, I love Patsy Cline. Secondly, this is one of my favorite Patsy Cline songs. Anyway, although I did not really hear it clearly, what I heard of Lilly's rendition sounded pretty wretched to me. I was going to try and catch part of this performance to see if it really was as awful as it sounded from a distance but all I managed to see and hear clearly were the judges' comments. I was surprised, but not surprised in a way. I think sometimes that 'quirky' is just a euphemism for 'gimmicky to cover up a lack of talent'. I know that I do occasionally hear and/or see some remarkable performances from time to time on American Idol. I thought the young woman who did 'House of the Rising Sun' was pretty brave to sing that song at all on American Idol and was downright fearless to start it out a cappella. And she did a nice job of it. I just looked it up and see that was Siobhan. I don't pay enough attention to really know one singer's name from another. And would that make for good television? Perhaps. > > Bob > Speaking of songwriting, I thought the guy who sang Cohen's 'Hallelujah' the other night did a decent job. But I also think that particular song is suffering from a bit of over-exposure. It seems like everybody and their Aunt Minnie has covered it. For Leonard Cohen, it seems to have become his 'Suzanne' of the 21st century. Don't get me wrong. I love the song. It's a beautiful song and k. d. lang can sing it anywhere, anytime although I still can't figure out why she sang it at the Olympics opening ceremony. Ok, Cohen's Canadian, but that's a pretty dark, gut-wrenching song to sing at something that is supposed to be celebratory. And I think the speaker that followed k. d. said something about it being such a hopeful song. I don't get that at all from: Maybe there's a God above And all I ever learned from love Was how to shoot at someone who outdrew you It's not a cry you can hear at night It's not somebody who's seen the light it's a cold and it's a broken Hallelujah If someone else sees something hopeful or happy in that, I would like to read your take on it. Mark in Seattle feeling gabby lately, apparently. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Mar 2010 21:27:25 -0800 From: Lori Fye Subject: Re: Kay's in the Bay (Now NJC) Thanks to Julius, who I noticed while on Facebook is living not far from me, I was alerted to Kay's move to the Bay. I'm thinking there are more of us JMDL folks in the Bay Area than ever before ... isn't it long past time for a Joni get together up this way? Doesn't have to be a big thing, or even all that organized. Let's just compare our calendars and figure out a free weekend, and where we all live. Naturally, if anyone else wants to come along, that would be GREAT! And ... WELCOME, KAY!! You're gonna love living here.
