She was playing an unplugged show, just her and 1 guitar (she should have had several to accomodate tuning changes), and we were up front so it was very intimate, like we were watching a living room house concert. She seemed a bit nervous at first but a responsive warm audience put her at ease quickly. She did a nice job of mixing up stories and songs, giving some personal history, anecdotes, and stories behind songs which made it seem very personal. She played quite a few from "These Four Walls" as well as the ones you KNOW she's going to pull out (Shotgun, Sunny, Polaroids), and then she turned it over to the audience for requests. There were only a few that she said she had forgotten, and she really seemed to enjoy herself. And she is a very good guitarist, I guess I never appreciated that aspect of her talent before last night. She did have lots of pauses between songs to tune, and of course I thought about Joni and all of her concert tunings I've heard. Her set was all originals with the exception of a Steve Earle tune. She left the stage to a standing ovation and came out for her encore, and for me it's where the show got very interesting. It was an all-cover encore starting with John Lennon's "I'll Be Back Again", followed by "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley, and then she talked about playing the Neil Young MusicCares show in NYC and performed "Tell Me Why", and then closed with Jimmy Webb's "If These Walls Could Speak". Sure did seem like she had a great time, and the show was about an hour and a half. I hope that she enjoyed it as much as I did, it sure seemed like she sincerely appreciated the warm response she got. Does that have 40 year old written all over it? I think not. Also, I don't dress like a grown up - my wardrobe consists of jeans and hoodies, and I use more hair gel than most 18 year olds, and I still am genuinely shocked when I don't get asked for ID when I buy a bottle of wine. However, there are some signs that I am not as young as I used to be. For example, I can spout off exactly how many grams of fiber I have eaten in a day (both soluable and insoluable) without thinking, I have to watch that I don't drink coffee late in the day, lone grey hair pop up in the oddest places, and I pretty much don't need an alarm to wake me anymore. I have no idea what the kids are listening to anymore, and listen to repeats of Casey Kasem's American Top 40: the 80's each weekend. I secretly wear a pair of drugstore reading glasses when my eyes are tired, and I don't get why people need to text so compulsively when they can just pick up the phone and speak. Finally, I can't get it through my head that I am older than Ryan Seacrest, and that when I watch Maude reruns that I'm at the age where I should be hanging out with Maude and Walter and not her cool daughter Carol. So yeah - the seasons, they go round and round, don't they? TGIF! I never used to watch any of those shows until the kids and I moved into an apartment and now I can't avoid the TV because the place is smaller than a house, and now I have nowhere to hide, so I've become a couch potato. I've even been known to watch "The Bachelor" and "Cribs" I hate myself for that, but getting up out of the comfy chair is so hard, especially when one of the cats decides to jump into my lap! I think I know the show you're talking about, with the choral groups, but I can't remember the name either. That was kind of a fun one. There's one show I may want to check out called "Dragon's Den." It's on CBC and I think it's based on a Brit show by the same name. People show up with pitches for inventions or businesses and try to talk a panel of expert business people into funding whatever-it-is. I've seen bits of it and it's quite entertaining - some people have really weird ideas for products, but then again, someone made money off pet rocks and singing fish, so you never know. ________________________________ From: Walt Breen To: Catherine McKay ; Bob Muller ; Jonilist Digest Sent: Fri, March 5, 2010 3:08:24 PM Subject: Rolling Stone's online article on American Idol (njc) These are exactly the points one writer at Rolling Stone online makes, saying he fears that the loss of the Nasty and the Crazy may spell doom for the show. I'm the same way with Amelia -- if she's leaning against me in deep sleep, I won't even reach across the bed for the remote if it might wake her. She's relaxed and adjusted enough now so that she sprawls on her back with her legs splayed out, as many dogs do, which never fails to make me smile. That CBC show you mentioned already has an equivalent in the States, but I don't remember what that's called either. And I declared it was silly and hokey. At first I hung out in the kitchen and listened distractedly with an occasional comment, like "Flat!" Then I moved partway into the TV room and sat on the arm of the couch. Within 15 minutes I was in the middle of the couch between them making comments galore. To this day when the singers sing, my son looks over at me for my reaction. My favorite of all is still Elliott Yamin (see link below). He never once blew a note no matter how intricate his vocals got. Plus a very humble, personable guy. This season's contestants I like are Girls: Siobhan (whom I call "Cape Cod" which annoys my daughter. My sister lives there too so we have our eye on her). I also like Katelyn Epperly (who did a song at the piano this past week) and I thought sounded great. And Paige Miles who sang sort of near the end but did very well. Guys I like are the "Cougar" favorite (his looks will get him far), and I'm pulling for Andrew Garcia who blew everyone away at the auditions with his acoustic version of Paula Abdul's song. I also liked the performer from last season, Danny Gokey, who performed (but I thought was a little blabby . and I'm disappointed he chose to go country because I'm not a big fan . although the soundtrack from "Crazy Heart" is a big exception). It is a huge bonus to have a DVR/Tivo system to watch the show since it is so silly half the time (no, I don't want to watch the people who should get booted off sing again -- case in point, poor cute little flowered headband girl who went last night . flat doesn't begin to cover it.) I'm not sure about Ellen as a judge either. She is a charming funny girl and I guess at least comments on stage presence sorts of things. As an aside, I do find it kind of amusing that she wears basically what Simon's always worn so I notice they've now separated them so it's not too matchy-matchy. He usually wears a white t-shirt and v-neck grey pullover pretty much like a uniform and one week there she is in the same and he's in a button-down shirt. I think they panicked before the show and said, "Oh my God! They're wearing the same thing!" My last comment is on the sound. We wonder if what they hear in that theater is different from what we at home hear. Often what I hear is missed notes, etc. and then the judges say, "Hey, I really liked that!" and we're saying, "What?!" Last night Simon even made a comment that upon listening back to someone, it was painfully obvious he hadn't heard correctly. Maybe they need special earphones or something. I'm all for American Geritol, Cassy! I hum along with my iPod in Costco imagining any second now some agent will sweep me away to recording history. Hahahaha. And I offered up a small harmony for my son to a song playing yesterday in Starbucks. He said he may consider me as a back-up singer for his band. May.
