I have to say that I'm enjoying it immensely, and watching it with a crowd where you compare notes about the performers makes it a lot of fun. Having said that - for those of you that have been watching...I predict the following folks get the boot tonight: Guys: Big Mike and Casey have ruled from the start and this week they were excellent. John Park has never impressed and I think he's gone after this week. Jermaine's total misread of Marvin Gaye's poignant "What's Goin' On" was enough to get him booted. Whatever he brings to the party, Todrick Hall can do better. I was thinking that Tim Urban would lose his slot but he was good enough to hang on for another week. I bet he gets booted next week and not this one. Girls: Crystal & Lilly & Siobhan have been head and shoulders above the crowd from the start. I have to say that I was not crazy with Lilly's take on Sam Cooke's immortal "A Change Is Gonna Come"...you can't top Sam's version so why try? By the same token, Siobhan takes on ARETHA with "Think" and knocks it out of the park, especially with that one note! Crystal is just genuine, authentic real talent - it would be a shame if her medical issues force her out. Paige could be a dark horse, she has something bubbling under that she hasn't shown yet. Having said that, Didi looks sensational but has never had the chops to match her looks, and Haeley is just too young and has that lisp working against her. I think some of the singers have improved (in some cases vastly) since the first night. Didn't really catch much except the last few of both boys and girls this week, so it might not be fair for me to comment. Generally, at this point, I think the girls have it all over the boys. That could change, of course. I pretty much agree with Bob's take on the girls. The ones you chose are the ones I notice too. (I think Haeley is so damn cute, but I agree that she's too young - she can always try again. The lisp doesn't bother me. I don't notice it when she sings.) For the boys, the ones that impress me most are the big black guy (that may be the "big Mike" you're referring to) and Andrew Garcia (I think he has a great voice but he hasn't made good choices this week or last, so that could do it in for him.) There's also the one with the kind of raspy voice that doesn't match what he looks like. He was compared to james Morrison (?) and I think he's kind of interesting. What is boring the crap out of me this time around is the judges. Ellen is too nice and non-committal, but not crazy like Paula was. She may be out of her element, and comes across as very nervous, but then again, that's also kind of part of her schtick. And Simon isn't as mean as he used to be for the most part and I think I kind of miss that. He comes across as bored now, which is understandable. Not that it's necessary to be completely mean, but I think the sparring between him and Paula added something. I also don't think they need four judges. It was OK last year when they brought Kara/Cara in, but I think that the differences between her and Paula added something, whereas the element of kookiness has gone. I think this show has jumped the shark, but I always think that TV should quit while it's ahead anyway - exit just as it's coming to its highest point and not wait until it's going downhill. ________________________________ From: Gerald Notaro To: Bob.Muller@fluor.com Cc: joni@smoe.org Sent: Thu, March 4, 2010 9:46:46 AM Subject: Re: NJC American Idol Yippee!!! Probably my last, but I felt I had to watch it once. I agree with you on your choices, Bob. I've always felt Siobhan was the real deal. And she's from Barnstable on the Cape (where my sister lives). I think she's much more quirkly that audiences realize, which is good. And Crystal totally blew me away last night. Any vote for her was NOT a sympathy vote. Big Mike didn't impress me that much at first, although I thought I'd like him as a person. But he's grown even since the competition began. and now I like him as a performer. So I'm rooting for him on the guy's side. So, tonight, I think that these folks should get the boot: John Park - wooden, no emotion, questionable chops Alex Lambert - should be put out of his misery (and ours) Lacey Brown - no depth to her voice or delivery Haeley Vaughn - brittle voice (like several of the women) And, honorable mention goes to Tim Urban. Can we just skip a step and eliminate him too? OTOH, Casey James and Lee Dewyze can stick around til the end, even if just as eye candy for moi :-) And in the catch-and-release category (because they should be thrown back in the pond for being too young and inexperienced); Aaron Kelly Katie Stevens And I suspect Todrick Hall has a future on Broadway. As for the judges - you're damned if you do, damned if you don't. Even Simon alluded to the contradictory advice. If I were a contestant, I'd end up saying WTF. Do they actually want originality? And it's not song "choice" as much as arrangement and styling. You can kind of take almost any song and bend it to your will, if you're clever enough. (see Marvin Gaye's National Anthem) And speaking of Marvin - it took a whole lotta misguided nerve to attempt "What's Going On." So, question to all interested - if you were auditioning for Idol, (the a cappella portion), what song would you sing? lots of love, Anne who is not as sleep deprived, because at least Idol ends at 10:00, unlike the Olympics... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 4 Mar 2010 11:12:53 -0800 (PST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: NJC American Idol Because of the way yahoo now composes replies, the email below may seem kind of disjointed. Sorry about that! Casey James is the one that Kara and Victoria Beckham made take off his shirt, n'est-ce pas? That was a bit of an uneasy moment. I wondered what would happen if the guys told one of the girls to take off her shirt? But then again, there was that awwwwful bikini girl from last season. She just showed uplike that. Embarassing, but some people will do anything for publicity. Casey is MUCH better-looking than bikini girl, even with his shirt on. Lee Dewyze is the one with the beautiful eyes, as I recall. I agree with what you say about how the judges comment on song choices. Yes, it is the arrangement, and not the song. I don't know whether the contestant chooses the arrangement or it's chosen for them. Possibly a bit of both. I suppose you'd have to really know your voice and your music to be able to instruct the band how to play a song, so I expect many of them end up with an arrangement that wouldn't necessarily work for their voice. I would have to think about song choice. It's another damned-if-you-damned-if-you-don't scenario. They don't seem to like it if you pick something that everyone does, nor do they like it if you pick something unusual or not particularly popular but, if you've got a really good voice or a unique (in the good sense) way ot singing it, then they like it. Everyone should stay away from the diva stuff, IMO, for soooo many reasons. Has anyone ever done a Joni song? There should be a Joni Mitchell night. That would separate the boys from the men and the girls from the women all right. I'm in a bit of Olympics-withdrawal right now, so I think I'm still on Pacific coast time. ________________________________ From: Anne Sandstrom To: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Cc: joni@smoe.org Sent: Thu, March 4, 2010 12:34:59 PM Subject: Re: NJC American Idol OTOH, Casey James and Lee Dewyze can stick around til the end, even if just as eye candy for moi :-) ... I'm ashamed to admit, I didn't watch Canadian Idol much. Ben Mulroney had a lot to do with that - can't stand him! Matthew (my son) calls him (Ben, that is) toast face, because he thinks his head is shaped like a piece of toast. He looks too much like his Dad for my liking (Ben, not Matt) and now I remember that my mother absolutely hated Brian Mulroney and said she felt like vomitting whenever she saw him. I could see the lineup... Mr. Bob Muller with his best rendition of Stevie Wonder's My Cherie Amour or maybe Dancing Clown Paz doing DMB's 41 I'd do Bonnie Raitt's I can't make you love me Kay - A Strange Boy (Angela doing The Dawntreader - well she's a bit young for American Geritol so maybe not) Kate Bennett doing my favorite "Wolf Song" Sue Mac - Marcie Robin Adler - Borderline Pearl - Leaving on a Jetplane Michele Dulson - The Scotsman Patti singing something by John Lennon and of course dear Jimmy saying "Oh no Mr. Cowel, I'm auditioning to sing backup doo wops" I can see it all now...
