Hi folks, I've been meaning to delurk since Paul mentioned the gig in Camden on the 21st March. I'm intending to be there, partly because I'm curious to hear Joni's songs sung live - and let's face it, I'm not going to hear Her sing them! Does anyone (Paul?) know which songs she tackles? Also, I'm very familiar with Sally Barker, as I used to go and see her play live in the early 90s. She always put on a good show; she's a terrific guitarist as well as being a fine singer. Her own songs are a little variable in consistency, but at their best (especially an early one called Chains) they're very good indeed. I've also seen Debbie Cassell, in fact I think she opened for Sally a couple of times, and they shared a lead guitarist for a while, Martin Ansell. Who else is going? The plea for sponsorship, briefly: I'm doing a 50 mile bike ride in aid of Healthprom, a charity which supports vulnerable mothers and children in Tajikistan. It's this Sunday, the 7th. If anyone has a bit of dosh they can spare, you can donate here: http://www.justgiving.com/Azeem-Ali-Khan I think it's possible to donate from outside the UK - at least, my brother in Sydney managed it! My best to you, Azeem in London PS I agree about Robyne Dunne, Jerry - I had a listen on Spotify, on your recommendation, and she's very impressive. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Mar 2010 06:06:58 -0800 From: "Mark" Subject: Re: njc HIV & AIDS - -------------------------------------------------- From: "Catherine McKay" Sent: Monday, March 01, 2010 8:57 PM To: "Mark" ; "Randy Remote" ; "Deb Messling" ; Subject: Re: njc HIV & AIDS > Mark, I could never take anything you say as an attack. > > I realized when I > wrote about AIDS/HIV that I might have been stepping way off base, and > this is > what happens when someone (like me) opens her big fat mouth or lets her > typing > fingers get loose without thinking and doing some research first. Catherine, please don't feel this way. You may very well be right in what you wrote. You were making a comparison that may very well be valid. You just happened to innocently and unintentionally, I know, push a button. > > I do remember the whole homophobic > reaction to it, how it was thought of as "the gay disease" (likely still > is in > some tiny-minded circles) and how certain people acted as if it was some > kind > of punishment that was deserved. That goes for anything from HIV to natural disasters, but I guess > HIV > really brought that out in those people who look for any opportunity to > point > the finger at others. I think there was skepticism about AIDS at first. Certainly there was denial in the gay community. Nobody wanted to believe that the careless days of unprotected sex were over or that there would be so much death and suffering. The unfortunate thing today is that there are young gay men who think they should 'get it over with', become infected with disease so that they don't have to worry about unprotected sex. After all, it is treatable now, right? This attitude makes me so frustrated and angry I could spit. > > I guess I was aware of HIV/AIDS because of where I've > worked for so long and what I thought I remembered is that people were on > it > right away, but that may not have been how it was perceived outside of the > "health" business. Sounds like you may know more about it than I do. Here is some information from AMFAR's web-site: 'Unfortunately, the initial emergence of the new disease among gay men and the pervasive homophobia within American society attached an enormous stigma to HIV/AIDS. The result was a dearth of voices that would speak out on behalf of people with HIV/AIDS or in support of federal funds for AIDS research and prevention. In April 1983, the AIDS Medical Foundation (AMF) was founded in New York to help fill this gap and raise private funds to support scientific and medical research on AIDS. Its first research grants were awarded in 1984, and AMF also became active in disseminating accurate information to legislators and to an uninformed, sometimes frightened, and often bigoted public. In September 1985, the American Foundation for AIDS Research (amfAR) was formed through the unification of AMF with the like-minded National AIDS Research Foundation, which had been incorporated in California in August 1985. To reflect the increasingly international scope of its programs, in 2005 amfAR became simply The Foundation for AIDS Research.' I can tell you that by 1992, AZT was the only drug that had been approved to treat the virus. It was not the most effective or the friendliest drug, but it was something. Wikipedia says it was first approved by the FDA for treatment of HIV infection in 1987 and the virus was first discovered in 1981. I guess that is a relatively short period of time. Wikipedia (not 100% reliable, as we all know) also says 'From its discovery in 1981 to 2006, AIDS killed more than 25 million people.' Sadly it was probably Mike Ryan and Kimberly Bergalis' deaths that spurred that on. I lost quite a few community theatre friends in the 80's due to HIV/AIDS. My heart goes out to everyone affected by it. I'm ashamed to say, I never read Randy Shilts' book. But the film was excellent I will only say one more thing about this. HIV/AIDS is a communicable disease and as far as I know, cancer is not. I don't mean to downplay the urgent need for a cure for cancer. But there was a need for immediate action when HIV/AIDS was discovered and, if you believe what it is in 'And the Band Played On', that action was hardly immediate and was delayed for too long.
