As soon as my friend Karen and I walked into the Paramount theater we sensed the electricity. A huge buzz in the room. I was beaming. Do NOT miss the performance if you're in LA this weekend. (or anywhere else it may play in the future) The dancers were oh so beautiful. Crisp, fresh, & so very YOUNG. I still have no idea how they kept up that intense pace all evening. A perfect blend of athleticism, strength and grace. The lead male in particular was wonderful, what gorgeous form. Radiant joy, the fusing of JM music and dance. Her trademark duality swirling about in every piece. The ballets opening song: The Fiddle and the Drum. goosebumps galore. It was sparse, haunting & powerful. The strongest choreography (IMO): Sex Kills, The Three Great Stimulants, Shine, Woodstock, Ethiopia (loved it!), If, and Big Yellow Taxi. Most disappointing: If I had a Heart I'd Cry -- for me the dance was flat, which was really unfortunate because i LOVE the song. Most memorable: Shine. When those first few notes played out over the Paramount sound system I was instantly overcome with emotion and tears began streaming down my face. A flood of memories taking me back to late Sept. 2007, when I was care taking my father who had recently been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Remembering that quick run to Starbucks the morning Shine was released then racing back to my parents house. My father sitting in his chair smiling at me I as carrefully unwrapped the CD then poured over the art design. Then we listened together. I was so deliriously happy that morning. Joni had FINALLY released a new body of work. Little did I know at the time that Shine would be the light to see me through months & months of darkness. The ballet highlight crowd pleaser was "If",the dance was filled with unabandoned youthful exuberance. I could also see cool Joni jive and those be cool moves only Joni could have incorporated. The energy exchange between the dancers and audience was contagious. I could barely wipe the goofy grin off my face. Oh, and according to the woman sitting behind me whose friend had organized the event, Joni was there. She was too fatigued to do the Q&A portion of the event but WAS in the theater to watch the performance. For me that's good news. After all the talk about her poor health lately I had the impression she might be bedridden or something. So if she made a trip to Seattle, that to me was a good sign. Looking forward to read the F&D reviews from LA when i return from vacation next weekend . Be well everyone & enjoy the ballet . Doesn't make sense if it's Geffen. In so many ways, I don't give a rat's ass who that song is about, any more than I care about which lover Joni is referencing in some of her songs. It could so easily be a composite of a number of different people, possibly including herself. In fact, with Carly's song, to me, it makes sense if it's about more than one person, because that way, the line "I bet you think this song is about you" is rendered much more ironic: "Yeah, it's about you.... kind of... but it's about a bunch of other people too, so don't think you're such hot stuff!" ________________________________ From: Randy Remote To: joni@smoe.org; Mark Sent: Sat, February 27, 2010 1:07:48 AM Subject: Re: Joni resentment sparked You're So Vain my my Well, if Geffen is gay and the song is about this egotistical womanizer....uh, it don't fit anyway... The first time he booked an up-and-coming artist for a show he would have them sign a contract, stipulating that he could have them back x times in the next y years, AT THE SAME FEE he was paying them for the first time. Of course, everybody signed, just to get a gig at the Troub. Hence you had artists like Joni, Cat Stevens, Gordon Lightfoot, Kris Krostofferson, etc. playing there at a point in their careers when they could fill much bigger LA venues. *************************************************** Steve Dulson Costa Mesa CA tinkersown@ca.rr.com "Folk Alliance Region - West" www.far-west.org ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 27 Feb 2010 19:18:09 +0000 From: Anita G Subject: Re: Joni resentment sparked You're So Vain my my I wondered who had a horse at Saratoga and flew a lear jet up to Nova Scotia. It was fabulous to meet up with old buddies Coyote Rick, Brad, Kakki, Lesli, Lindsay and Clark, and to meet Richard for the first time. According to Michele, the dance expert, the dancers were all technically very good. There were moments when the music, visuals (limited to one circular projection) and happenings on stage really worked for me, and were quite moving, especially the moments when the child wandered through the scene, representing innocence, no doubt. It was great to hear Joni songs played so loud. :) I was really impressed with the song selection, and loved it that it was so heavily weighted towards more recent and less familiar (to the general public) material and recordings. Overall, though, it didn't quite add up to me. I didn't feel a real connection between most of the dances and the music. The finale, BYT, was a real joy, and I realized that I had really missed that sense of fun in the rest of the ballet (except for the great couch potato scene in Reoccurring Dream) - I know, I know, it's supposed to be dark, but I'd love to see future cooperations, if they happen, have a more varied emotional pallette. But any Joni is better than no Joni, and getting together with my Joni-friends - priceless!! I love you guys. *************************************************** Steve Dulson Costa Mesa CA tinkersown@ca.rr.com "Folk Alliance Region - West" www.far-west.org ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2010 #61 **************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe -------
