Monica Date: Sat, 6 Feb 2010 20:24:42 +0000 From: Patti Parlette Subject: Smurf, Wally Lamb, and Joni: Laughing and crying Dear Ones: Reader beware: long and "I get that strong longing" for Smurf content. Don't say I didn't warn ya! ; ) I have been *relatively* quiet this past year, trying to get a good grip on my grief, but today this "love is a story told" calls out to be released. I'm trying to have more sense of humor, keeping the sadness at bay, throwing the lightness on these things, laughing it all awayyyyyyy. Some of you may remember how I stood in line for two hours (November 2008) to get Wally Lamb to sign his novel "The Hour I First Believed" for Smurf, and to ask him his question: "Did you know that Joni was NOT at Woodstock?" A long and lovely conversation ensued (much to the displeasure of the 50 or so people behind me in line!), where I told him all about Joni in Fiction and Smurf and his illness and all. He signed the book: "To Bob Murphy: I know THIS much is true...Joni was NOT at Woodstock...but maybe she was there in spirit? Wally Lamb" Kay and Ashley delivered that book to his bedside, and his last text message to me read: "From: Smurf. PP, you really outdid yurelf with my wonderful gift. Thanks! I love you. Received: Sun, Nov 23 5:23 a.m." Jody told me that that book ("THE BOOK!", she called it) was always on his nightstand, from Mass. General Hospital to hospice and back to Mass. General Hospital again. Okay. Flash forward (while the painted ponies go up and down and the carousel thing begins to whirrrr) to November, 2009. Wally's got another book out, so I am there. "Wishin' and Hopin': A Christmas Story." (Dusty lyrics! And Annette Funicello is in this one, just for you, Chuck E.!) This time, I decided to write Wally a letter, telling him all about Smurf and how much the book meant to him, so I wouldn't monopolize his time again. I told him all Smurf's troubles, I told him all his charms. (My Old Man. We don't need a piece of paper from the city hall, keeping us tied and true.) I told him all about my JMOCD, and dropped many a lyric in there. Luckily for Wally, I wrote it at the end of the workday, just before the book launch. Hence, it was only two pages long. Ha! After his talk (which was a hoot!), when it was finally my turn, I dropped the letter on the table. He looked up at me and said: "I remember you! You're the Joni Mitchell person!" I smiled and said: "I want to knit you a sweater, I want to write you a love letter, so I did." He laughed and said: "Wow! You wrote ME a love letter? Thank you! Now I"ll just be waitin' on the sweater." (Sue Tierney, can you knit him a sweater from the JMDL?) To make a long story short, we had another lovely conversation, and he signed my book, as requested: "For Patti Smurf the JMDL! My best to you and everyone you love, Wally Lamb, November 9, 2009" That's got us ALL covered! :) My best to you, may your skies be blue! Now, here's the best part -- the heart of the matter -- of this "love is a story told", for anyone who has made it this far. Last month, a picture postcard charm was delivered to my mailbox, as the winter days unfold. It was the end of a hard day's night of work work work, and i had the blues inside and outside my head, but this little gift made me "oh honey, you turn me ON!" I'm as bright as a neon light now... A message from Wally, in his finest hand! Voila: "Jan. 7, '10 Hi, Patti -- I really enjoyed your letter and seeing you at the Co-op several weeks back. Given all this Storrs snow & these frigid temps, I can't wait for "the hissing of summer lawns." Long live your fond memories of Bob Murphy & may he rest in peace. Yours, Wally ("What a strange, strange boy.") See? I've got JMOLQD, too. Must be catchy!" ***** How Joni cool is THAT? He likes it! Smurfy likes it! (We were always joking about commercials. "Sometimes you feel like a nut, sometimes you don't." "Mothers are like that. Yeah, they are!") Okay, I will sign off now, before I burn out right here before you. Laughing and crying, you know it's the same release of love for our Smurfadelica, the best JMDL baby we everrrrr had. XOXOXOSMURFJMDLXOXXO (that's a big Smurfy he-pins-me-in-the-corner-and-he-won't-take-no hug), Patti P., a.k.a. Shirley Yu (what a faithful thankful girl I be) P.S. Loving all the Smurf tributes and photo beauties and memories on FB today and yesterday. All My Loving, I will send to Yuuuuuu....Let these walls come tumbling down for all to enjoy as we all SHINE on, like the moon and the stars and the sun... P.P.S. Happy birthday to Ms. Marianne Treegreen Rizzo! *Do* let up the sorrow Death and birth and death and birth He says "Bring that bottle kindly And I'll pad your purse ....with Joni lyrics! At the very beginning of the studio version of "Chinese Cafe", there's a bass note and a piano that seem to waver or pulse a few times. It doesn't sound like that on the Geffen box CD. Is the LP showing more detail in the tremolo (put there on purpose) or was the there a speed / wow problem with the LP cutter? Mind you, I'm not complaining; I like "Chinese Cafe" a lot, especially Guerin's drumming. It took me 30 years to get around to asking this question, so consider the source.
