First of all: congratulations to the proud papa! If Princess Stella is already too used to her name to drastically change it, you could always stick with plain Stella which is nice, I think. (And the meaning of Stella: "star" is maybe just the right amount of gay?) But if you like a Joni-related name, I would really advise against calling her Joni. We had the same discussion a year or so ago on the list. I don't think most people thought it was a good idea, and personally I find it rather disrespectful. I was going to suggest Marcie before I read on and saw you don't like it that much. Well, it's no good discussing matters of taste, I can only say it is a name I really like, and moreover I feel the sound of that name would really suit a little headstrong dog. I'm sure you'll get lots of other good suggestions, and in the end you will find something that sounds right to you - and to her! I just wish you many happy years with your new companion! Lieve PS Maybe I'm the only stupid one, but it took me for EVER to see what "lan ded" in your heading meant! (Particularly since I read the first word as the name "ian" with a capital!) My roommate and pal Willy turned me on to ksl.com, one of the local (SLC) TV station's website, which has a huge section devoted to dogs for sale and for free. After a few false starts and bad timing, I persisted with one dog who looked a lot like Mari, and today, we drove down to Taylorsville, ad I am now the proud papa of a jet-black purebred (pedigreed!) 4-year-old female Schnauzer whose pedigree name is Princess Stella. I may be as gay as three hummingbirds singing showtunes, but calling a dog "Princess" just isn't me. Which is where y'all and Joni sort of come in. If I'd gotten a male dog, I was gonna go for Jericho because I love the closing linnes of the song, and I considered Lindsay (Lindsey) for a boy or girl, but I understand that song is about a serial killer. So, loving Laura Nyro as well, I'm now leaning towards Emmy/Emily, one of my favorites of hers. However, I just got the lovely girl, and there's still time -- so can any of you think of a nice Joni-reference name I've missed? I've considered "Joni" itself -- might be confusing, but maybe not; and also Marcie, great song, but it's not my favorite name. Any and all suggestions will be seriously appreciated and considered. Catherine, a few days ago I was involved with a list discussion about politics and was bemoaning the fact that young people didn't seem to me to be angry enough about the state of things. The old adage about being careful about you wish for, or perhaps what you moan about, had an interesting consequence. I had been talking off list to Rachel about Joni's illness. Of course, 'little' Rachel has a special place in my heart because I got into Joni when I was 14 and Rachel was just 14 when I met her (and you) and she played and sang at Joni Fest in 2003 and we jammed along to 'Woodstock'. As a young person, Rachel is out there with others protesting about the environmental impact the Vancouver Games (whom she says were supposed to tbe greenest games) is having on the environment and the indigenous peoples. She wonders if Joni had all the latest information on environmental impact before F&D was included in the Cultural Olympiad. Rachel has sent me lots of links to information. One about the organisation she is involved in is 'No Olympics on Stolen Land: http://www.peaceculture.org/drupal/node/455 I personally have been involved in the Olympic movement and am a published member of the International Society of Olympic Historians, so really feel passionate about the higher values the Olympiad brings. I have been deeply moved by seeing the Olympic flame at many Olympics and have seen shared great joy with people from all over the world as the flame has passed by. To those of us who love the Olympics, the flame carries Hope. However, corporate greed and corruption still prominently figures in the Olympic movement. Corruption, cheating and greed killed the Ancient Games. Nothing much changes. However, Rachel is out there feeling passionate enough about people and the planet to take to the streets and, it seems from her email, taking quite a lot of abuse for it. My heart is both with her, her fellow protestors, those who are aggrieved, the animals who may have lost their habitats, but also with those who have looked forward to the Games for so long. With heart and humor and humility, I suggest: Hana! Hana says when life's a drag Don't cave in Don't put up a white flag Raise up A white banner In this manner- Straighten your back Dig in your heals And get a good grip on your grief! That's exactly what you have done with all of your losses. I was so happy to see you "get back, get back, get back to where you once belonged" last month, and I'm sorry I was unable to write at the time. But now that it is Saturday (two "I don't have to run days" in a row!), I have time on my hands, no child to raise. I was also terribly sad to hear that you lost your little Mari. But you gotta keep thinking you can make it through these waves, and you do it so well. It takes cheerful resignation, someone told me. Applause, applause -- life is our cause! (I'm learning, it's peaceful, with a good dog and some trees...) When I read your last post about losing little Mari, another song (besides all the Joni ones!) came to heart and mind. k.d. lang's cover of Jane Siberry's The Valley. Of course, I have my own "love is a story told" behind it. (FB friends, sorry for the repeat. I just have to share this with Walt.) The loss of my Mom on January 16, 2008. As Stevie Wonder said when I saw him last year: "The worst day of my life. The day my Mother died." (She died in Alta View Hospital, by the way, pas tres loin de Bountiful. And Smurf called me at her deathbed. So, I think of him, too, when I hear this. When he last saw k.d., he commented: "What a set of pipes!") That CD (Hymns of the 49th Parallel) was in her CD player when she died. And then, exactly two months after that horrible sad terrible day, I saw k.d. at the Palace Theater in Waterbury, CT. The lyrics are beautiful and very deep, as k.d. explained before the song, but whoaaaaa. They went way deep for me. She was my Mother up on that stage. No merde! Even my companion felt it. It's very both sides now. Heartbreaking, yet uplifting at the end. (In my opinion, anyway.) "Sometimes it seems that allll you've ever wanted, has been taken away", YET "we will walk, we will walk, we will walk in good company." Good company here on the JMDL. So, "there is your song from".....k.d.! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TDaumpzzGNs&feature=related And don't miss the 2nd comment (as I write) from "hersenlozeslet", who also lost a dear canine companion. I live in the hills of CT You live in the valley near SLC. I love the best in you You love the best in me. Peace, Patti P.
