First studio recording in 7 years (njc) So I'm going into the studio Friday to record a bunch of songs live for a new release. This is very exciting and seems to be a culmination of a lot of events and yet also a beginning. It will feature two brand new songs, "The Most Beautiful Boy in the World" ( can you guess who inspired this one) and "The Beauty of a Soul" as well as an old jonifest favorite, "Sailing to New Orleans" and many other songs. Will definitely keep you posted on things and when it is available to pre-order. Thank you for all of your support in the past, present, and future. Or maybe it has to do with whether you're a visual or an aural person. Videos don't do much for me either. In fact, I can think of only one or two Joni videos I've seen. I didn't even know they existed until someone mentioned them here. I should probably look for them on Youtube! I can't speak for Bob, but I guess most of my important music years were my teens, and there were no rock videos then. There was the occasional movie (The Beatles' "Help" and so on) and appearances on TV shows like The Smothers Brothers, and before that Ed Sullivan, and there were specials devoted to one popular artist (I think there was a show called "The Midnight Special," but don't know if that's the one I'm thinking about. So it was a treat to see your favourite artists on TV. But the main thing we did then was to listen on the radio or the record player. I'd take my transistor radio with me when we went on trips and I'd put it under my pillow at night and listen to CHUM-FM (back in the days when they were cool and didn't play the same stuff everyone else plays these days - old fogey talk!) Music was something you could either listen to intently or have on as background when you were doing other things. I just remembered that there were ear-phones for the transistor radios, but there would only be one for one ear. The sound was probably crappy but, at the time, I certainly didn't know it, nor did I care. I think video demands more attention. You have to sit there and watch it. I think I can only watch a video once, maybe twice, and that's it. But I can listen to music all the time. Actually, these days I find it hard to listen to music and do anything that requires concentration at the same time, but I think that's something that happens as you get older, unfortunately. I need to pay attention to the music if it's music I like; otherwise, it needs to be turned off - can't walk and chew gum at the same time! I can't have the TV on and have a conversation with another person, although I do know people (even people my age) who have their TV on all the time, like background noise. That would drive me crazy. On the other hand, if video has inspired your lovely wallpaper, then it's a good thing. ________________________________ From: Mark-Leon Thorne To: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Cc: jonipeople LIST Sent: Thu, January 28, 2010 1:58:58 AM Subject: Re: Come In From The Cold I have to respectfully disagree, Bob. I've always liked the goofy way they kibitz with one another at their concerts, or just the way they talk to the audience. Kind of like being invited to a big family party. Kate and Anna did it, and Rufus does it (I love his intros and talks to the audience on his tribute to Judy Garland - I think that's the one where he talks about playing "Wizard of Oz" as a boy, and how it freaked his mother out when he'd dress up in women's clothing - LOL!) I kind of hope not. ________________________________ From: Monika Bogdanowicz To: Joni people! Sent: Thu, January 28, 2010 8:20:53 PM Subject: Re: Catcher - NJC RIP J.D. And Oddmund's too. I can't get through that list without choking up. It makes feel feel closer to both of you. I got to see the McGarrigles several times over the years, and their music gave me so much pleasure when I was in my twenties. (I even sang My Town once, accapela, in an Irish pub. The folks wanted to hear me sing.) It's been amazing to watch them grow over the years. I thought it was cool how they let themselves age so visibly in the public eye, letting their hair go grey early, before it was considered acceptable to do so. They were always so down to earth and true to themselves, and we loved them for that. I guess I was always hoping there would be one, since I really love the McGarrigle-Wainwright clan, some of them as much as I do Joni. I feel a connection with them, because my family was from Montreal, and they'd vacation in places like Rawdon and St-Sauveur. And my mother's family was a big Irish one, and the McG's Dad was from the same sort of origin. Oh yeah, and I took piano lessons from the nuns too, but of course, I was never as good. I've always liked the goofy way they kibitz with one another at their concerts, or just the way they talk to the audience. Kind of like being invited to a big family party. Kate and Anna did it, and Rufus does it (I love his intros and talks to the audience on his tribute to Judy Garland - I think that's the one where he talks about playing "Wizard of Oz" as a boy, and how it freaked his mother out when he'd dress up in women's clothing - LOL!) I just saw Kate's obit on the McGarrigle's website, and it is just so well-written and very sweet: http://www.mcgarrigles.com/ I see that Kate performed as recently as December (the same concert this Youtube clip is from). I had never heard of Guy Garvey before, but he is very good. I was cyber tripping all things McGarrigle this evening when I came across this Youtube clip. Nice one, taken from the McGarrigles' final performance, together with family and friends, at Royal Albert Hall, London, just this past December 9th. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KB8zE2cT_WA&feature=related Kate's funeral will be held in Montreal, on Monday Feb 1, in the grandest cathedral of the city.
