Yes, Elvis can be self-indulgent, but he also frequently asks the right questions-how do you write your songs, what is the meaning of this line, etc. Besides being a respected composer himself, he has an obvious reverence for Joni Mitchell, and turned in an excellent version of Edith and The Kingpin when Herbie Hancock was on. I enjoyed the U2 show most recently. Even though I am not a huge fan of them, I have new respect for their humility (!) as musicians, their candor and humor, and I always welcome an artist's insights into the creative process. I think that aspect is what sets this show apart from any other I can think of-Bobby Bare had a similar show years ago on TNN. (I apologize for the length of this post, if it's too long, delete.) I think their are several forces at work, here. First and foremost is a widespread disappointment that Obama has performed so poorly. His sharp veer to the right is seen by many as a betrayal of his base, who voted overwhemingly for a change from the politics of the Bush years. What they've gotten instead is Bush Lite. Same imperialist nation-building policy in the mideast. Obscene amounts of money shoveled to the military (we're talking upwards of 1 trillion dollars a year). Just recently, (under Obama), the Pentagon has okayed sales of missiles to Taiwan, pissing off the Chinese, who essentially own America economically. Also the agreement with Poland to install Patriot missiles 35 miles from the Russian border. Then there's the massive bank bailout. The list of Obama's capitulations is too long to go into here. Point is, the base of progressives that were once enthusiastic about Obama are feeling disillusioned with the Democrats. Obama's stategy to reach out to the Republicans has left him with a bloody stump. They hate him and will continue to hate him no matter what he does. Too bad he can't do what Bush did, give everyone the finger and do whatever he damn well pleases. As Bill Maher said, rather than the "audacity of hope", hope for some audacity would be most welcome. The so-called Health Care reform is part of the equation, too. It is not, by any stretch of the imagination, universal health care. While the prevailing bills contain a few reforms, and will cover the poorest of the poor (that is, those who don't own anything that could be sold to pay for massive hospital bills), it is first and foremost a massive giveaway to the health insurance companies because it will require every US citizen to purchase private health insurance. This comes at a time when unemployment is sky-high, Americans are carrying record amounts of personal debt, and millions of Americans are just working hard and hoping they don't get sick. They can't afford another bill in the mail, even $20 dollars/month, let alone thousands a year. If they do get hospitalized, they lose their home, everything they own. The number one cause of bankrupcy/home loss in the US is unpayable hospital bills. This is an ongoing epidemic. Obama started off the health care debate by removing Single Payer (universal) health care from the debate, something the American people want, something all the other civilized nations have. But money rules. Finally, and no small thing, is the right wing attack on anything Obama. It may be hard for those outside the US to believe, but the right wing commentary is screaming that Obama is a socialist, a pinko lefty. How is it that so many people believe this? It is because the media is owned 5 or 6 corporations that have a great interest in controlling the debate. There is virtually no left wing commentary in the American mainstream media. It starts at the center and goes to the far right. The closest thing to the left, seriously (heh) is Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert on the Comedy Channel. I shit you not. And the irony of it all is that Obama in truth is about as pinko left wing as Rush Limbaugh. Right now alot of Americans are hurting and scared, and the Republicans are playing them like the proverbial fiddle. It's HIS fault! Forget that Bush rushed us headlong into this massive debt situation. Democrats are only following suit, but get all the blame from the right. Americans are gullible and fearful, but, in their defense, are not given balanced and accurate information, mostly right-wing hysteria. The Democrats have no one but themselves to blame for their bait and switch tactics. If Obama doesn't embrace change himself, and soon, he will be out in 3 years, and the opportunity missed may not come again. These are fairly high end ones, which, on sale, are like $700 or more. My question is why do the receivers have all these HDMI inputs? (4 or 5) If this thing is going to be used with the TV.....don't all the sources get plugged into the TV? like a blue ray player, a game console, etc. So the TV, I can see why it needs several HDMI inputs. But as far as the RECEIVER....... what HDMI things get plugged into the receiver? Like I'm just using my stereo amp, and the TV goes into it as "AUX" (not HDMI). And then the TV has stuff plugged into ITS HDMI inputs. (cable box, game box, 'puter, DVD player) What all other stuff do you plug into an AV receiver via HDMI? why not plug it into the TV? don't you HAVE to plug it into the TV to get the picture to show up? sorry if this is really dense.... but I am confused. I thought all the "stuff" that has a picture associated with it had to go plugged into the TV, and then the TV goes "out" and into the receiver. Do those high end receivers have all those HDMI in's in case someone has several TV's to run to it, each of which has its own bunch of stuff added on? is that the reason? hmmmm...thanks, Em ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Jan 2010 09:32:04 -0500 From: Gerald Notaro Subject: Re: NJC home theater receiver question Good question, Em. The reason the receivers have so many is so multiple HDMI signal can be "passed through" to the TV with only one needed input. The better ones do more than pass the signal, they will upconvert them to 1080p and then send then to the tv. What is really puzzling is why the take the HDMI signal and yet also require an digital audio input in addition since HDMI carries both audio and video. That bugs me no end. Overall I have to give this show an A in terms of the usual crap on TV. I was cyber tripping all things McGarrigle this evening when I came across this Youtube clip. Nice one, taken from the McGarrigles' final performance, together with family and friends, at Royal Albert Hall, London, just this past December 9th. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KB8zE2cT_WA&feature=related Kate's funeral will be held in Montreal, on Monday Feb 1, in the grandest cathedral of the city. I think it made '80s music that may have been otherwise forgettable, much more memorable. Songs which we may not have given a second listen to became stuck in our heads because of clever film making. Songs which were way too cryptic for most people to bother to try to understand became clearer in light of their video interpretations. Music videos enhance a song for me and sometimes extend their life or they can be appreciated separately for their cinematography or clever techniques. The visual interpretations of some of Joni's songs have brought new appreciation for those songs for me. Come In From The Cold is cinematic and nostalgic. Good Friends was technologically advanced and stuck in my head. It reminds me a bit of Peter Gabriel's, Digging In The Dirt. The Beat of Black Wings is like a mini movie and really gets Joni's point across about Vietnam vets. My Secret Place was a bit lame, with Joni inanely smiling across a table and fluttering a napkin in front of her face to Peter Gabriel. I still wish that was on the video compilation just for completion. The Dancin' Clown video was cute and gave a candid view of Joni's kitchen (and house slippers). Nothing Can Be Done actually had David Baerwald in the clip which was a treat. That also gave me a new appreciation for the song and inspired my wallpaper for that song. What do others think?
