The lovely listmaster Les and I did not run away together, however, we are
in contact with a certain Bernie character who is currently incarcerated
to find out his secrets.

The Mass election was off cycle of
others in order to fill Ted Kennedy's seat.  (correct me if I am
wrong Mass listers).  Some astute republicans realized that this seat
was the one that gave the Dems the super majority that the Dems have
threatened to use to push health 'care' or as I would prefer to call it,
health insurance reform.

Money and fast acting grassroots
organizing from the factions that oppose health insurance reform were
given credit for the turn around in the poll numbers for Brown and the
upset in the election.

While there is a tendency for the party
not in power to lose seats in a mid term election, it was not anticipated
this would happen in Mass.  I think the Dems were sleeping on the
job, coasting and not paying much attention.  Some feel Coakley was a
weak candidate and did not do enough to maintain her lead in the polls.

What I would really like to see happen is for the Dems to realize
that they should not ram things through the congress and senate but work
in a bipartisan fashion to create health insurance reform that is greatly
needed.  There are things that I am sure even the staunchest
republican here would say need addressing, such as eliminating
pre-existing illnesses from preventing people being insured, creating a
smarter way to administer insurance so the cost of this does not impact
rates, stop insurance companies from denying claims for terminal diseases,
etc.

As far as Obama goes, yes, he did make a lot of
promises.

While on the campaign trail, Barack Obama made hundreds of promises.
And throughout the president's first year in office, the Pulitzer
Prize-winning Web site PolitiFact has tracked each one of those
commitments. 

Just before Obama took office, PolitiFact combed through campaign
documents, speeches and debate transcripts to see what promises he had
made. They found more than 500 individual promises and put each of them
into a database to be monitored closely. 

They found 91 promises have been fulfilled, 33 compromised on, 87
stalled and 14 broken. The remaining promises are designated as being
"in the works."

Promise No. 126 on the PolitiFact list &mdash; "To begin removing
combat brigades from Iraq" &mdash; is among the many that are
"in the works." 

"There was a similar promise that he said on his first day in
office &mdash; he would bring in military leaders and direct them to end
the war in Iraq. And that one is a promise kept," PolitiFact Editor
Bill Adair tells NPR's Steve Inskeep. "So, he's really made
considerable progress.

We live in an instant
gratification society, yet I sometimes can't figure out why we continue to
look the other way when it comes to Iraq.  Obama has disappointed me,
but he landed with many difficult situations that were not of his
doing.  He wanted to strike while the majority was there for the
health insurance reform, I understand that, but the economy is still
struggling to recover and folks are not happy.

The mid term
elections are going to be very interesting.  Many of the gains the
Dems have made could all be washed away.  Obama even commented on
being a one term president in an interview with Diane Sawyer, stating that
"I'd rather be a really good one-term president than a mediocre
two-term president."

they have totally stonewalled and opposed everything - including that which
in the past they were for - with the goal, if you recall, of breaking Obama

You call on the Dems to work "in a bipartisan fashion"????  Sorry, they have
tried.  The blame for lack of progress is totally and squarely on the
obstructionist GOP.  Osama bin Laden will sooner cooperate with the US
government than the Republicans will work with the Democrats on anything for
this country's sake.

I wish a lot of folks would stop castigating Obama and instead work on
supporting him in the face of the most vicious, staunchest oppositional
tactics we have ever seen in Washington.
