Upon review of the logs, I've noticed that the library gets some curious hits. Search engine spiders (Google, Yahoo, etc) drop by once a day or so and index the site. They take a systematic trip through the library database, trying to access each consecutive record, even records that don't exist. In addition to that, strange unidentifiable bots from China, Korea, Russia, and India have been trolling the database as well. In the last ten days, these bots collectively hit the database about 125,000 times - which is about once every 6 or 7 seconds all day, every day. This is in addition to the traffic from real people who are actually viewing the site. Each record they attempt to get is a resource hit on the server. So basically, the server (which may host 100 other websites as well) is using a huge chunk of its resources on jm.com alone. The only solution I can think of it to shut it down permanently (just kidding - wanted to see if anyone was actually still reading). The solution is to require every web surfer to log in to the site before they can view it. This will stop the bots dead in their tracks. It's the lesser of two evils as I hate to require people to have to log in... but hopefully at least that way the site will be able to stay up. I hope to have the site back up in the next few days. I've wondered why some sites want you to log in or register, and I guess that's why. I suppose a person doing a casual search could log in as "guest" and still be able to do their research. If that's what keeps the evil bots away and that's what it takes to keep things going, then so be it. ________________________________ From: Les Irvin To: joni@smoe.org Sent: Mon, January 25, 2010 5:22:40 PM Subject:RE: www.jonimitchell.com > Just wondering what is happening with the jonimitchell.com website. > It has been down for days Here's the sitch... basically, the site is overloading the servers (too much traffic) so the host keeps shutting it down. ... I know that Joni was never into making music videos, although I never understood why because they can be an excellent form of creative outlet and a way to extend the creativity of the song. This is a not quite videography of Joni's music videos but, for those who feel the same way as Joni, it is also an invaluable commentary of Joni's songs by Joni herself as she explains her thinking behind several songs. I'm not sure why My Secret Place was left off. It's quite disappointing too that Larry Klein does an unconvincing impersonation of Michael McDonald on Good Friends on an otherwise state of the art and very creative music video. If anyone is willing to trade or sell a good digital copy of this compilation, please get in contact with me. All I have is a very, very poor copy from VHS.
