Kate McGarrigle Although there is no Joni content here, I am grateful to get this. I am also very saddened. Kate and Anna are not well known in Australia but, when I first heard them, I took an interest and bought Dancer With Bruised Knees. What a special album that is. It was really my introduction to Canadian music. I always connect them with Ry Cooder because I bought one of his albums at the same time (I forget which one) so, both albums made me think of backwater swamps and a simple life. I thank them for giving me those visions or at least the opportunity to dream. Bon nuit. I particularly like the McGarrigle Hour version. It's the one i knew first. This news is so sad. I wonder if the McG/Wainwright gang will put out some sort of tribute or maybe do a show. I found an interesting web page from BBC correspondents around the world giving their impressions of President Obama's performance as felt by the country they cover: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8461470.stm I find it somewhat interesting that many of the nations feel Obama hasn't had enough impact on "their" specific needs. The way I see it is that Obama is President of the United States of America and before we can begin to be of assistance to other countries we have to stabilize our own economy and clean up our own internal messes. Whatever the USA or its president does is generally felt 'round the world. If, like Canada or Mexico, you share a border with the US, the impact is particularly strong. However, I agree that other countries do rely too heavily on the USA and that sometimes people forget that the president of the USA isn't the president of the world. Even science fiction or futuristic movies (I'm thinking Star Trek) seem to have a president or leader of some kind (president of the world? the UN? a league of nations? a league of a whole buncha planets?) who seems to behave like an American - but then, those movies tend to be made by Americans, so that's not terribly surprising.
