Catherine: Your remark about archivists cracked me up because my brother is the archivist for Sony Music in NYC (yes, it is a dream job!) and when I asked him if a person could be considered an amateur archivist he said there is a policy within the archivist community that the only people who can call themselves archivists are people who have received their MLS. So in deference to my beloved brother Tom, I'd like to say that I consider myself a "researcher" of the music of Joni Mitchell and not an archivist, if that's ok with you guys (and other people who are REAL archivists on the list). :-) Mark: Thanks for calling me Sue Tierney. Like you and Sue Tierney (not using Sue Mac here, Sue, though it's hard not to ;-)) I believe she is an artist of that much importance. She has the chance to actually choose what it would contain. After she is no longer in her physical body (which unfortunately, as you say, Christopher, has to happen someday) somebody else is bound to do it anyway. Maybe not a year later, maybe not a decade later. But someday, Joni Mitchell's entire legacy of recorded material will be archived by somebody and preserved in some way that will be accessible to the public. I also think it would be fascinating to be let in on more of her process. She has verbalized her creative process in many articles and interviews over the years. I really appreciate it. Regardless of my stance on Joni's 'inevitable passing,' I certainly hope she manages to overcome whatever is bothering her. As for the idea that artist's retain their rights to guard the scraps, I agree 100%. But sometime in the late 80's, boxes started surfacing and vaulted material flooded mass consciousness. That which had been bootleg-only suddenly got liberated - and sure, it was done with dollar signs in the eyes of the execs. No doubt about it. But now we've gotten used to the privilege of peeking in. I guess I'm just feeling a little 'DE-nied!', especially when every time I walk into Newbury Comics I'm faced with another archival release by someone OTHER than Joni. That Geffen box was a cruel tease with the 3 extra tracks. Hi Loves: I just got a message from NPR and had to share it immediatement, even though I'm in Flip City here on the first day of classes. (People calling me up for favors, people's futures to decide, telephone screamers, etc...) Pardon all typos and no time to do the tiny url for Herr Muller. : ) Get this (an excerpt): "In other words, discovery is a major part of this series. But this might still disappoint some people. The music we love is so important to us that when our favorites aren't included, we get upset. Myself included. Even the CEO of NPR, Vivian Schiller, came by my desk and asked, "Is k.d. lang on the list?" She looked a little crestfallen when I said no. Now, of course, k.d. lang is a great singer beloved by millions. But, for the sake of discovery, we decided to spotlight Kitty Wells, considered the first woman to become a country-music star. In her day, recording technology wasn't what it is today." KITTY WELLS???!!!!! LOL! Here's the link: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=122693575&sc=fb&cc=fp Oh, okay. It's slowing down a bit now. Here ya go, Bob. (You betcha!) http://tinyurl.com/ybv5u2e Myrtle knew what she was talking about! (Most of you know how she once said to Joni: "Who do you think you are, Kitty Wells?") I don't know if Joni made it. Does anyone know? Michelle? Smurf is cracking up right now. I don't know how many of you watched the Golden Globe awards last Sunday. Meryl Streep won the award for Best Actress in a Comedy for her delightful performance as Julia Child in 'Julie & Julia'. She gave one of the best acceptance speeches I have ever seen on an awards show. I tried to find it on YouTube but I suppose it's copyrighted. It was moving, eloquent, humble and timely.
