Bert Jansch & John Renbourn b Goodbye Pork Pie Hat Had a bit of an online 'Goodbye Pork Pie Hat' fest yesterday after spotting this track (originally from their 1966 album 'Bert & John') on Bob's post - got me searching the net for it - found it here - http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/song/Goodbye+Pork+Pie+Hat/16346234 The search also led me to a version by Scottish guitarist Tony McManus - who, in his introduction, mentions going to a John Renbourn workshop where John claimed you could play just about anything in DADGAD tuning - apart from jazz - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B3Gl_TTH5KQ This got me wanting to watch Joni's live version - from the 'Shadows and Light' DVD - which I found here - http://bit.ly/5WE4gr before stumbling across this cool cover (of Joni's version) by a band called Kiran Funk - fab vocals!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_xntqNzGlc and rounding off with Charlie Mingus himself, live at Montreux in 1975 - wonderful stuff!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TU_RxWXijz0 Seasons Greetings to all PaulC NP The Swell Season - I Have Loved You Wrong (looking forward to seeing them in a couple of weeks time) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Dec 2009 10:23:04 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Goodbye Pork Pie Hat FWIW, back when I started the project I was counting/including/collecting *instrumental* versions of GPPH, but they soon began adding up PLUS I was getting hate mail (I kid you not) from people that were livid beyond compare that I was including what were obvious non-Joni covers in the database...so, I removed the instrumentals and left the ones that include Joni's lyric - won't remove those for love, money, or hate mail. When I joined the list it turned on my melody gene (thanks Kate Bennet) and my wish to play music so I bought a series of Ukuleles and finally bought a baritone ohana bk20 ce for my christmas present. But playing covers was not enough and I started writing songs enough for a CD! now Here is my first song written for playing on the baritone Siquomb Now is time Bm7 Gmaj7 Now is the time G Gm To give your love Bm7 Gmaj7 Now is the time G Gm To open your heart C And when you hear E I love you C Look back into her eyes E A And say I love you too Bm7 Gmaj7 Now is the time G Gm To forget the fears Bm7 Gmaj7 Now is the time G Gm To forget the tears Bm7 Gmaj7 Now is the time G Gm To forget the broken hearted years C And when you feel her kiss E and a warm embrace C Hold her in your arms E A And make her feel your love too Bm7 Gmaj7 Now is the time G Gm To give your word Bm7 Gmaj7 Now is the time G Gm To be sure and true C And when you hear E I love you C Look back into her eyes E A And say I love you too ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 28 Dec 2009 12:20:10 -0800 From: "Cassy" Subject: NJC - Kennedy Center Honors Gala For those of you who are Bruuuuuce fans, you may want to catch the airing of this show: Earlier this month, John Mellencamp was the first of several artists performing musical tributes to honor Bruce Springsteen at the Kennedy Center Honors in Washington, D.C. He was followed by Ben Harper, Jennifer Nettles of Sugarland, Melissa Etheridge, Eddie Vedder and Sting. John's contribution was a slowed-down performance of "Born in the U.S.A." which morphed, mid-way, into a full rock version of Springsteen's anthemic signature song. The annual Kennedy Center Honors Gala, which recognizes artists for their lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts, is the highlight of the Washington cultural year. The special airs on CBS as a two-hour primetime special on Tuesday, December 29 at 9:00 p.m. (ET/PT). It looks like it might be a great show. Funny Bob getting hate mail for the instrumental covers. We wouldn't have had the words at all but for the music so there never could have been any joni content minus Mingus' music on this one! What are folk like ? the Mingus big band version is amazing too. Thanks for all of this wonderful music and all the effort and dedication. What a joy. I take this as a hint that her mom has passed on. What ofd her dad? (2) Is Joni working on any new material for her next album on the new label? I'm sure I'll have other questions as time goes on. It's nice to be back in touch.
