In one way I hope you are right, because it would make a lot more sense. In another way, I feel rather embarrassed that I would not recognise humour or irony when it hits me in the face! What he said came across to me as friendly, gentle concern - just very misplaced! And I thought the guy replying "Oh please!" (Crosby I think) did not get it either! Here's the clip if you want to check for yourself: http://jonimitchell.com/library/video.cfm?id=172 (It's about 6:20 into the clip.) Bob, I agree Joni looks really down, like she realises she has just missed what could have been a very major event in her life and her career. With Stephen Stills showing the Woodstock mud that it still on the leg of his jeans, she must have felt like the woman who was asked to stay and look after the food in the kitchen, while the men sailed off to discover new continents... I think Muller is right: Dick Cavett had a very witty and dry, even sarcastic, way about him, so I'm absolutely convinced that he was saying this humourously. I used to love Dick Cavett for that reason. He could get away with saying things with his drawly kind of voice that other people would never be able to say, and his humour was often so dry that it would probably go right over a lot of heads. P.S. I'm pretty sure that, if my parents were still alive, they'd STILL want to know where I was going and who I was going with. My mother was always passing judgement on my fashion style (or lack thereof), even when I was well into my 30s and beyond. (She don't like my kick-pleat skirt; she don't like my eyelids painted green - but I was not a fashion Queen! There, I made it rhyme!) ________________________________ From: "Bob.Muller@Fluor.com" To: Lieve Reckers Cc: jonipeople LIST Sent: Wed, December 9, 2009 11:17:35 AM Subject: Re: new videos in the JM library Dick Cavett was pretty hip and cutting edge in his day...hence the Woodstock performers being on his show in the first place. I got the feeling when he said that that he was being very tongue-in-cheek and funny, he would have been fully aware that these folks were independent of their parents. I don't KNOW that for sure, but it's the vibe I picked up when I saw the clip. Also one of the more moving Joni performances out there - I think part of that is the heartbreak she was feeling at not having been a part of the festival and seeing that CSN made it out and to the show just fine. One of the best days in my life. We had about 20 JMDLers there that day. My memory is shaky so I don't want to mention one person and not everyone. There was a big RV with a banner on it too. Lots of fun. I am pasting the video details back in for ease of reference. A new video has been added to the Library at JoniMitchell.com: Just Like This Train - Bethel, New York 1998 View it here: http://jonimitchell.com/library/video.cfm?id=171 My question: I saw the "JMDL 'heart' Joni" banner on this clip. As this dates back to 1998, is there any more info on who was involved at the time? Any of the people who hung up this banner and are still around now, who would like to tell us more about it? ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Dec 2009 07:27:15 -0800 (PST) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Sadly, No Joni covers on this one... the pissing of summer lawns? a case of poo? Just thought I'd put that out there. See http://www.ohchr.org/EN/AboutUs/Pages/HumanRightsDay2009.aspx for more details. I hope some people can take time to reflect a little on day to day issues of human rights. Most of us on this list enjoy many freedoms. However, we still live in countries where diversity is not fully appreciated and human rights are yet to be fully realized and respected. In Ireland, for example, religoius, educational and medical institutions are exempt from aspects of employment equality legislation in relation to the employment of gay men or lesbians. That's just one example that i can think of. Realzing Rights are urging large companies to publicly commit to respecting human rights. http://www.realizingrights.org/?option=content&task=view&id=459 GARRET ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Dec 2009 15:25:50 -0500 From: "Jim L'Hommedieu" Subject: Giving Chicago their due, njc I had never seen video of Chicago in their prime and I enjoyed this. This is a real, live version of "I'm A Man". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOvGa-8-Lns&feature=related Some of the comments say that the group lost their edge when Terry Kath, the guitarist, died. I'm not so sure of that because Wikipedia says that he died in 1978. That's long after the pop sound started (in my opinion) during 1972 when Chicago V (five) was released. Does anyone have an idea about what caused the shift? Jim L'Hommedieu ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Dec 2009 16:04:48 -0500 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: Giving Chicago their due, njc Kath's accidental suicide certainly help things, but I would argue that it just accelerated the downhill slide they were already on. Their first five albums were all pretty awesome, great combinations of jazz, rock, blues, jam band, piano pop, and probably some other genres as well. They have stood the test of time for me. But their evolution and success with the Top 40 turned them into a singles band, and they morphed from their original variety of blues-jazz material with three vocalists to mostly Peter Cetera singing sappy ballads ("If You Leave Me Now", "Baby, What A Big Surprise" were two really wretched ones that come to mind). Kath's death was pretty much the nail in the coffin for that phase of their career. Like a lot of artists they insisted on gravitating towards popularity rather than artistry, unlike Joni who always wanted to go the other way (CMIARS notwithstanding). Bobby Darin, David (Honeyboy) Edwards, Loretta Lynn, Andre Previn and Clark Terry will also receive the awards on Jan. 30, the night before the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards. A formal acknowledgment will also be made during that telecast. The award comes after an eventful year for Cohen, whose world tour produced newsmaking moments when the 75-year-old singer collapsed onstage in Spain and when his Israel show was the subject of vigorous protest. The Canadian songwriter was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame last year. Though his career has spanned four decades and 18 albums, Cohen has only ever won one Grammy Award, for his participation on Herbie Hancock's album, **"River: The Joni Letters,"** which won album of the year at the 2008 show.
