I read it in the 70s and it had a real influence on me (as did A Rand - cringe cringe). And even after all the Wolfe sarcasm, I still love modern art. Lucky for me because I work in a location that has the largest collection of NYC modern art in an open concourse. I continue to marvel at the pieces that Wolfe would have had a field day on and many pass by without a second glance or snicker about how a 3 year old could have done it. I think Joni made a good song out Wolfe's critique, striking the right balance to remark on Wolfe's narrow generalizations of artists. Still, I shutter to think that the NYC art scene and the celebrity of being an artist there has not dissipated in the years since he made his observation. And such an amazing song too...since no one responded, I'm tempted to read Wolfe's book myself as well. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 5 Dec 2009 11:34:00 -0800 From: "Cassy" Subject: Holiday Cheer - NJC This video is just too cute especially for dog-lovers. I mean, I knew unemployment had risen, I listen to the news but to see it presented in such an "in your face" way was somewhat depressing. http://cohort11.americanobserver.net/latoyaegwuekwe/multimediafinal.html I did hear today that the latest unemployment numbers are showing some improvement but as millions of people become part of the "invisibly" unemployed (their benefits have dried up and thus they are no longer counted) I wonder if it's really getting better at all? Regardless, it's very interesting to watch.
