On a completely different note (!) how DO you find all these Joni covers? I mean, do you have a special search engine that zeros in on any of Joni's song titles? I'm amazed at how you do it. Kenny B ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Dec 2009 13:12:56 -0500 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: Bob's Christmas present & Covers I wish I had a special search engine...there are some obvious things, like doing song title searches on I-tunes, allmusic.com, amazon, cduniverse, cdbaby, etc. CDBaby JUST added the ability to search by song title after YEARS of my pleading with them to do so - that's been a big help although it still has some bugs. Simply googling a song title turns up lots of stuff as you would guess. Ebay has been a treasure trove of oldies too - I have a seller in the UK who stays on the prowl for Joni covers for me. YouTube, MySpace, and Reverbnation have also recently become good resources. It's actually a pretty an_l-retentive process...there are things I do daily, other things I do weekly, some monthly and some annually. And needless to say, it's extremely time-intensive - but it's fun as well. And because they are constantly coming out, all of these searches have to be repeated over and over. I have to add that my success is to be attributed to the many many folks who have emailed me about covers they have or are aware of. Lots of discoveries would not have been made without my good friends. Thanks to Les, people can email me through JM.com and let me know of them too, and seldom does a week go by without at least one e-mail that tells me something I didn't know about. And thankfully, most of Joni's song titles are a big help too for the most part. If you google things like "Edith And The Kingpin", "Chelsea Morning", "Circle Game", "Harlem In Havana", etc, 99% of the results you get are Joni-related..now you still have to go to all those websites to catch the reference and see if there's something there, but at least the leads are there. Not so with songs like "Woodstock", "River", "Amelia", "Blue", even "All I Want" and some others where it's impossible to dig through the thousands and thousands of hits you'll get trying to search on those. I'm sure that this is WAY more than you wanted to know, but I'm glad you asked and as you can see it's a process that I'm pretty passionate about and have honed to a pretty good science over the 10 years I've been managing the project. And I did hit # 3,000 yesterday with a cover of "Jericho"...haven't been able to update that one yet as it appears the JM-related sites are currently down. I've not read Wolfe's "The Painted Word" which inspired the song and gave birth to the phrase, and I was wondering if y'all have. Just wondering if these lines in the song are Joni's or Wolfe's: "You read those books where luxury Comes as a guest to take a slave Books where artists in noble poverty Go like virgins to the grave" "Like a priest with a pornographic watch Looking and longing on the sly Sure it's stricken from your uniform But you can't get it out of your eyes" The whole song is brilliant but these words have just always jumped out at me.
