I was somewhat familiar with Jeffrey so naturally i went to see him last Saturday near Paris. The concert was OK, but what really blew me away as well as the entire audience was his wife Kris Delmhorst who opened the show. I had never heard Kris Delmhorst although she has quite a few albums under her belt. As is often the case, it is hard to tell from the recorded music what the artist can project in real life. Kris has a fantastic presence, she sings beautifully, has great harmonies, and an interesting guitar style. She joked that her husband called her fingerpicking < swimming horses > because that what her right hand fingers really look like. I realize that most of these comments apply to many folksingers out there and i cannot find the words to express the fact that Kris really moved me and that the emotion that transpired truly mesmerized the quiet french audience. Check out < Blue Adeline > on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6bi6ewsfP2s you can tell she listened to Joni. And also : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7oJU69mqmxU &NR=1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nMcMEv7jxgs &feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tp3dMqfB-gs &feature=related Well i'm buying all her cds as i write this.. Laurent ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Nov 2009 18:54:57 +0000 (GMT) From: Lieve Reckers Subject: joni covers at jazz festival and new Amelia film I attended the Teignmouth Jazz Festival in Devon (England) this past weekend. I friend lives there and had invited me. The timing was a bit ironic, as I discovered on my way out from London, reading the paper on the train, that the London Jazz Festival had also started and that Melody Gardot was playing at the Royal Festical Hall. Damn damn damn! Oh well, I told myself that that show would have been sold out anyway... But the reason I'm writing is that at the Teignmouth festival, I twice got a special "Joni buzz" that I felt I should tell you about. At two of the concerts, after the intermission, the musician in question announced that he/she had just received a special request and was now going to do a song by Joni Mitchell. Each time, there was a noticeable "ahh" coming from the audience when her name was mentioned. It was so unexpected, in this very "serious" jazz festival, that it made the surprise even more thrilling. It made me wonder if there was another JMDLer secretly in attendance. If so, please stand up and wave! In any case, it must have been a very determined Joni fan (or two) who had done his or her research in advance, because the song requests were for actual covers that had been recorded by those artists. They are: Both Sides Now, a very beautiful instrumental version by the fantastic pianist David Newton, and River by the singer Liane Carroll, another great talent I was very happy to have discovered. Bob Muller, if you haven't got them yet (and I really hope I have beaten you to it!) then let me know, and I will give you more details and try to get them for you. And then quickly something else which is kind-of Joni related. Apparently there is a new film out, called Amelia, about - yes - Ms Earhart. I wonder if Joni's song will be used in the credits? The film is made by Mira Nair and features Hillary Swank and Richard Gere. For anybody in the UK, you can hear a Front Row interview with Mira Nair on the BBC Radio 4 website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006qsq5 - just go to the programme for 13 November. From what I heard in this interview, I got the impression that Joni really managed to not just use Amelia as a vehicle for her own emotions, but that she really captured the spirit of Amelia Earhart herself. For instance, Amelia kept diaries and wrote: "The lure of flying is the lure of beauty". If anybody knows any more about this film and whether Joni's song is used, please let us know! Thanks for thinking of me! As for the Amelia film, I haven't seen it but I do know that Joni's song isn't involved. It has been mentioned in a couple reviews and articles about the film however.
