I first heard of her when her CD was advertised on British TV about a year ago. I only saw the ad once, and her music was very untypical for what usually gets advertised. It really grabbed me and I managed to memorise her name ("melody" and "Bardot" but with a G, that's how I did it!) I then looked her up on some music sites and really still loved what I heard. "A cross between Madeleine Peyroux and Norah Jones, but more original", is what I remember reading. I decided to buy, but somehow it never happened, maybe - I am ashamed to admit - because nobody else I mentioned her to, had ever heard of her, and so I never got another prompt to get on with it. Listening again now to her songs on u-tube, thanks to Michael's post, is really making me feel guilty. I love this music, I should have bought her CD a year ago, and I will do it today. By the way, I also read that she started off as a fashion student, but then almost lost her life in an accident (run over on her bike by a jeep and left for dead). She turned to music while recovering in hospital, and wrote her first album that way. Her health is still very fragile, which is why she wears dark glasses and normally sits down when performing. The AllMusic site has a decent amount of information about her http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll I must admit I prefer her cover of Blue Motel Room to that of Edith and the Kingpin (one of my very favourite Joni songs) , and I like her best of all when she does her own songs, which I think are really strong. But that Edit track on u-tube with Herbie is also interesting because of the short interview with her - and with Herbie: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XM6Mbv8hzH0&feature=related. Thanks, Michael and Gerard, for getting me back to my lost good intentions! I have enjoyed it immensely. As opposed to most of her peers who trot out the same old warhorse songs to apply their torchy voices to them, Melody writes great original stuff that SOUNDS like classic torch songs and sings in a very playful and sultry style. And when she does pull out a familiar tune ("Over The Rainbow" on her latest) she puts an original spin on it such as was mentioned in regards to her treatment of Blue Motel Room. While I'm recommending music of the 'easy listening' variety, I have to put in a plug for my boys from Norway, The Kings Of Convenience....finally after YEARS of waiting, they have a new album out ("Declaration Of Dependence") and it is a beautiful stunner...flowing harmonies, catchy rhythmic tunes...give it a chance. Due to popular demand the Guitar/Piano transcription page has a new sort function, thanks to our fabulous webmaster Les Irvin, database guru extraordinaire: You can now sort the entire database by song, album, transcription author, tuning or generic tuning. This is a dream function for me because I'm always wondering, "How many songs can I play in this tuning?" Now all I have to do is pull my printed list out of my back pocket and see that, Oh, in generic tuning x77325 I can now play Hejira, In France They Kiss on Main Street, Slouching Toward Bethlehem, and My Secret Place (in addition to five other songs!!) Cool, that should be enough until I get the hook! :) Thanks again to Les, and all the other fabulous people who contribute to the transcription page, especially Howard Wright, Marian Russell, Dave Blackburn, and our two new piano transcribers, Michael Dunn and Rachel Avery. I'm so happy the piano songs are adding up. Our labor of love to a body of the world's most beautiful music is one of the best sites on the web, thanks to you. I must say her 2006 debut CD, Worrisome Heart, is one of my desert island discs. The arrangemements are so clean and simple, the singing is sultry and understated, the lyrics are great, her timing is brilliant - beautifully done all around. 10 original songs, straight from Gardot's heart and pen. I was lucky enough to catch her show at the Montreal Jazz festival this summer. She was half an hour late ! She hobled onstage with a cane, wearing ridiculously high heels and her trademark sunglasses, approached the audience and simply said + Waiting for Gardot - My mother once told me that I should always keep a good looking man waiting - so, Montreal, thanks for waiting ;. She then proceeded to do several songs from both her albums - and was quite chatty, talking freely about failed love, the French, men and pain. No retiring wallflower, she explained how she got started in show business at the tender age of 16. She took her parents' car into Philly one night on a bit of a joy ride - only to discover that she had emptied the gas tank and had no way of getting back home, since she was completely broke. In she walks to a bar to beg for change, to buy a few bucks worth of gas, when she's told by the barman that the piano player had just quit. + I can play for you ;, said she, and they said, + Allright, but we're not going to pay you - lets see what you can do - you can keep your tips of course ;. And that's how she got the money to drive back home - emptying out her tip money from the cognac glass perched on the piano. If you like jazz vocalists, you owe it to yourself to check out Worrisome Heart, if you have not done so already. It's a gem. The Canadian radio single of 'Shiny Toys" off the DOD EAT DOG album was a little different than the album version - the male voice (Thomas Dolby??) that recites "I love my Porsche" in the chorus also said "I love being out on the golf course" yet I've never found that version on vinyl!! Could you be able to explain the discrepancy? Was there a radio version for airplay only, that did not get released to the public? I did not buy the 45 - I bought the album in '85, so I never compared.... This song was a regular play on AM 600 and FM 105 in North Bay and Sudbury, Ontario, Canada, and I heard it quite often (enough to know my album's version was different!!) Any reason why?
