"Yeah, that was a real special thing for me. I stopped in at A&M where Joni was cutting," recalls Perkins, who also had a romantic fling with Mitchell. Mitchell was recording in a studio across the hall from Browne. "Joni came out of her studio and I said hello and we started talking," he remembers. "She asked if I wanted to hear what she was working on. Joni and I hit it off. Oh boy, did we ever hit it off!" "So the next day I went to see her at the place she was sharing with David Geffen over in Beverly Hills this big, huge mansion. Geffen lived in one half and she lived in the other. I ended up going into the studio with her a couple of nights. I was watching Tom [Scott] overdub instrumental parts on 'Car on a Hill' when Joni asked me, 'Do you hear anything on this?' I did, but all my gear was with Leon. So we got her band's equipment but the guitar wouldn't stay in tune on the bottom three strings, so I told her this wasn't going to work like I wanted it to. I pointed to this huge anvil guitar case in the studio that had 'James Burton' [Elvis Presley's guitar player in the 1970s] written on the side of it. It's 3 a.m. Joni was hesitant to mess with it. But I flipped the case open and there was that pink paisley Telecaster [Burton's signature guitar]. I told her, 'Here's what we're gonna do, we're gonna do some city sounds like you want.' So I took Burton's Telecaster and I overdubbed the slide parts on "Car on a Hill" on James Burton's guitar. When I put the guitar back in the case, I folded the damn strap different than the way I found it, so he'd know somebody had messed with it [laughs]." > Best to all PaulC ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Nov 2009 08:46:52 -0400 From: Gerald Notaro Subject: You lucky New Yorkers Billie Holiday often said her favorite singer was * Jimmy Scott *. That is interesting. Many of us know about Farm Aid and enjoy the performers who raise funds for them each year at a benefit concert: Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, Willy Nelson and Neil Young and many other performers they bring into their cause every year. Perhaps what we didn't know was what kind of work they do with some of the funds they raise. Currently they are working to defeat Ohio's proposal 2. My friend Jane is a huge fan of John Mellencamp, she lives in a very rural farming area of Ohio. There is, apparently an issue on the upcoming ballot which will directly affect farmers with livestock and she wanted to know what the Farm Aid people thought about it. Rather than just believe what she's been reading in the local newspapers about how great this would be for Ohio farmers she wrote to the Farm Aid people and asked them directly. Here is what she reported back... <<< I am just providing this as information to my Ohio friends in case they wondered the same thing that I did - "What does Farm Aid think of Issue 2?" so I contacted them and this was their response. (FYI - Issue 2 is the Proposed Constitutional Amendment to create the Ohio Livestock Care Standards Board to establish and implement standards of care for livestock and poultry.) This is the response I received back from them: Thank you for contacting Farm Aid regarding this issue, and thanks for all your great support of our organization through the years. Like yourself, we have worked to educate ourselves on Ohio's Issue 2 proposal to understand it's potential impacts on family farmers and eaters alike. We are against the Issue 2 proposal. As we understand it, Issue 2 asks for a constitutional amendment that would create a "Livestock Care Standards Board" for the state of Ohio. This Board would have authority over a wide range of issues relating to animal agriculture in the state. While this amendment is said to support food safety, local foods and animal welfare, all laudable causes, we at Farm Aid are concerned about the following aspects of the proposal: * Constitutional amendments are often reserved for issues that affect the rights of all citizens. Ohio's constitution creates very few boards; among the ones that it has created are the State Board of Education and other things of that stature. The many boards and committees that govern agriculture in Ohio are not named in the constitution. This proposal is a curious departure from that norm. * The Livestock Care Standards Board would have the power to override any act by the state legislature, the Ohio Department of Agriculture and other initiatives and referendums brought before the public (outside of a new constitutional amendment) that relate to animal agriculture. This is an extraordinary level of unchecked power. * In contrast to decisions made by the Ohio Department of Agriculture or the legislature, the Board's rulemaking will not require public input, review, evaluation or an avenue to appeal decisions. The Board's decision is final. * Because so many political appointees will be present on the Board (most made by the Governor and two by the Speaker of the House and President of the Senate), it is more likely to be subject to partisan abuse in either direction. At its worst, this means that appointees could remove the oversight authority of other government bodies in favor of factory farms and at the expense of family farms who take good care of their animals and land. * We also understand that this proposal came as an attempt to preempt the Human Society US's (HSUS) efforts in the state of Ohio to ban practices common in factory farms. HSUS has held successful ballot initiatives in CA and AZ that change the space requirements in facilities like poultry battery cages, sow gestational crates and veal crates to allow more room for the animals. We understand that HSUS was looking to pass a similar initiative in Ohio, and this proposal came as a response from groups who oppose it. I hope this is helpful, as this is a confusing and complicated proposal. We have come to support the stance of the Ohio Ecological Food & Farm Association (OEFFA), which you may have encountered already, accessible here: http://www.oeffa.org/alerts.php. Please don't hesitate to contact me with additional questions and thank you so much for your interest! It is so important that farmers and eaters alike take an interest in the food and farm issues that affect us all. >>> ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Nov 2009 06:07:07 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Joni: A Tribute To The Legendary Joni Mitchell Thanks for the wonderful report, Mark - Snakes & Ladders...wow. Bob ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Nov 2009 07:15:56 -0800 (PST) From: Bob Muller Subject: Joni Covers, Volume 118 - Overflowing Rivers! And zoooooooom, there goes October...so long, we barely knew ye. Which means it's time to flip the calendar page, go to the music cellar and break out a bottle of prime Joni covers; another sizzling case of tracks for your consumption. Thanks to the folks who helped with this one, my Joni covers posse as it were - Paul and Mark-Leon. I bow in your general directions... As always, it's a crazy mix of the old and new, the obscure and the obscurer, from around the globe, and yours to have and to hold. And since it was assembled about a year ago, there were LOTS of "Rivers" bubbling up, so this one has Rivers overflowing. Oh well, could be worse. And hey, you even get an EXTRA hour to enjoy them! Here's the link to download the tracks in mp3 format: http://tinyurl.com/ye776yx And here's what you'll find: 1. Celia Slattery - Chinese Cafe/Unchained Melody: I was delighted that Celia picked this deep track for her second Joni cover (you can probably guess the first). Celia's been on the scene as a performer (primarily in the New England area) for over three decades - this version is for the most part true to Joni's but there are enough differences to make it interesting and of course it's a beauty of a song no matter what. 2. Johanna Sillanpaa - River: And now we sail over to Sweden to check out the lovely Johanna and her equally lovely version of "River"...this vocal/piano track comes from her 2007 release. 3. Jason Jenkins Quarter - Goodbye Pork Pie Hat: This one's a nice fun jazz romp - Richmond, Virgina's own Jason is a bassist and has a great quartet as well. This track (like a couple that have come before) combines Joni's lyric and Rahsaan Roland Kirk's lyric - I think Joni's is way better but that's just my opinion - anyway, everyone gets to stretch a bit on this nearly 6-minute mellow version, and the vocalist does a bit of playing. I forgive him for singing "underground" instead of "Underdog" because it kind of works - plus he only sings Joni's first verse...still, I like this track a lot. 4. Deb Callahan - Dry Cleaner From Des Moines: A fine acapella take, unfortunately it's just a 40-send track as Deb only sings the first verse. Oh well, leave 'em wanting more, that's what I always say... 5. Michael Rupert - River: Michael has been a fixture on the NY scene as long as Joni's been recording! Singer, actor, director, composer....a long list of credits. His cabaret take on Joni's Holiday classic comes from his holiday EP last year. 6. Steinar Raknes - All I Want: A couple of fine instrumental interpretations of this one on this month's volume - this one is odd man out as it's an instrument you don't hear much in a solo context - the acoustic bass. But the recording is not odd at all, it's very accessible and enjoyable. This one comes from his 2008 release. 7. Green Pyramids - Both Sides Now: I was SO jacked when this 1998 CD finally popped up on ebay, I had been tracking it for years with no success. Green Pyramids were a 90's band on the Minneapolis scene, and this rocking version of the franchise reminds me of The Pretenders. I'm a rocker at heart, so when I find a Joni cover that rocks I'm in double heaven! 8. Amy Kuney - River: Like I said, since I was assembling this one about a year ago, lots of Rivers were popping up (insert goofy geographical reference here). This one was an I-Tunes exclusive single and is quite lovely - Amy's voice has a little bit of chalky texture to it and she skates effortlessly through it. 9. Side By Side - Urge For Going: Doris Justis and Sean McGhee have been performing as Side By Side for over 23 years. They bring a traditional folkish sound to UFG and their well-practiced harmonies meld beautifully together. Doris has produced live and radio folk music shoes as well. 10. Karma - Woodstock: Musically, this is pretty much a rehash of the Matthews Southern Comfort cover, but lyrically it is in a class by itself as it is recorded in Finnish. I guess maybe this should been the track I finished with, but I saved that spot for a real gem. 11. Shannon Kennedy - River: Forget the fact that she's a west coast California cutie, youngster Shannon Kennedy is a multi-talented vocalist and saxophonist to boot - surprisingly, on this track she lets the sax do the singing and creates a very mellow and lovely (albeit somewhat bland) tone. From her 2008 holiday CD "Almost That Time Of Year" - which it almost is... 12. Don Fraser & His Orchestra - Both Sides Now: Move along folks, nothing to see here... 13. Dorian Ford - All I Want: Meanwhile, there is PLENTY to see (and hear) on this track, a nice rolling piano trio take on the Blue opener. Londoner Ford has a very impressive resume, has played with many greats and was even a Chick Corea Award winner while attending the Berklee School of Music. This one is very playful, bouncy and inventive; credit also to his bandmates who provide stellar support. 14. Michelle Hotaling - River: Michelle also recorded this one in 2008 for the holidays and offered it up as a free download on her website - she's got a great voice and there are some subdued musical colorings as well that enhance the voice and piano. 15. Kathy Simpson - Jericho: This is audio pulled from a video that Kathy put on YouTube - she's got a lot more Joni up there, I really liked this one and wanted to share it. The Jaco-ish bass work is also excellent. 16. Jan Marie Bacon - Both Sides Now: With a last name like Bacon, you suspect that it's going to be a little hammy - and it is. 17. Nataly Dawn - River: Fragile, hushed, and heart-stoppingly beautiful. I love the different chords that get tossed in the mix - this one really gets my attention with the harmonies, the lightness and tenderness of the vocal and the guitar. Probably my favorite track on the disc. 18. Marlon Baufeutre - Dog Eat Dog: Whoa! Did he say "Dog Eat Dog"? I did...this one is a bit of a home recording, Marlon provides all the vocals and assorted minimal musical audio bits you hear here. Has a homemade sound, but my hat's off to him for his choice and his inventiveness to throw in some new business! 19. Rob van Wely - All I Want: At last we get a vocal, by Christine Carlier - I love the accented singing, the way she sings applause and cause and the like. Rob's acoustic guitar is also very nice. This duo comes to us from The Netherlands. 20. Lex Land - River: Another California girl, Lex's holiday song also came along last year - this time 'round it's voice and guitar. Her voice has a unique quality to it, like Jolie Holland if that reference means anything to anyone. 21. Energy Shower - Both Sides Now: Oh boy...look out everyone, it's a TRAIN WRECK! This poor singer tries to sing BSN acapella but has no sense of pitch so she changes keys about every other note. Pretty darn funny and as always bonus points awarded if you can make it all the way to the 2:40 mark. More like a golden shower than an energy shower... And there they are - November 2009's niceties for your sampling. Hope you like it - hope you like some of it - feedback is always welcome and appreciated. Thanks for the fantastic review Mark. Sorry I missed you on Friday night - the Opera Bar was packed and I couldn't find you. The concert exceeded my expectations too. For me, it was a very emotional evening, as I caught up with a couple of friends I hadn't seen for some time, and we were reminiscing about happy times past. One of my friends was talking about how her children were growing up way too fast, so when Tania Bowra sang "Chinese Cafi" and uttered the words "we look like our mothers did now when we were those kids age" I looked over at my friend and we both had tears in our eyes. The tears completely broke free when Katie Noonan sang "The Circle Game." This is far from my favourite Joni tune, but the words were so meaningful given our earlier discussions. I was wondering over the weekend why I was so moved by the experience, and I realised it's because I have never heard any of Joni's songs performed live before. Sure, I've watched DVDs, youtube clips and the like, but I've never experienced a real live performance of her music. The other reason I was so moved is because of the venue. It has been years since I attended a concert at the Sydney Opera House and the venue is awesome in itself. It sits right on Sydney Harbour, which is the most beautiful setting. The evening was balmy but with a lovely breeze. It was the perfect confluence of events for me: Joni's music that has had such an impact on my life, catching up with good friends, and the perfect venue. The other factor is that the place was packed and I was delighted to be among people who had as much reverence for Joni's music as I. Enough of my rambling, here's my perspective on the wonderful music. The concert kicked off with the seven women singing Shadows and Light. Perfect harmonies, and a wonderful way to showcase the talent. I agree with Mark that Katie Noonan probably stole the show, but for the me the real highlight was Tania Bowra. Maybe because she sang two of my fave songs Coyote and Chinese Cafi, but she really in an amazing talent. The audience appeared to appreciate her as well, as she got some very good applause. I also agree with Mark that Kristin Berardi is a real find. I was also incredibly impressed with Virna Sanzone's Chelsea Morning, All I Want and Hejira; and Rachel Gaudry blew me away with River and Edith and the Kingpin. The real surprise was the choice of material. All the classics were there, but it was terrific to hear Snakes and Ladders, Be Cool and You Dream Flat Tyres. The audience seemed to appreciate the girls backing Kristin Berardi whispering the "fire and ice, fire and ice fire and ice fiiiiiiiiiirrrre" thing. Well there you have it. A near perfect evening. Perfection would have been if I had managed to catch Mark and Don.
