She would often Sing this ancient Ballad for Phil named "Tom "O Bedlam" . Do they have any particular weirdness to suggest why they'd be chosen? They always pick people who are in opposition to one another, that is, from one extreme to another, as a rule. Interestingly, most of the time, each family does seem to learn something from the other one, often to lighten up on something they're really hung up on, and not be so attached to believing there's only one way to accomplish things. In the spirit of "love is a story told".... This evening I went to a book launch/signing at the UConn Coop. One of our Sociology professors, Gaye Tuchman, wrote a book called "Wannabe U: Inside the Corporate University" and it's the talk of the campus. Everyone knows it's about UConn (and our ilk), although the author will not say that it is. (Richard and Jerry, denizens of academia, may be interested in reading more about it here: http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2009/10/06/wannabe And you know, there may be more. Maybe Deb M, too, because, like Sarah Palin, she reads whatever they put in front of her....LOL!) The long-time English professor who introduced her started talking about -- surprise surprise for OLQDed moi! -- the wonderful singer/songwriter Carly Simon. He joked: "I'll bet you think this book is about you, you're so vain." Everyone laughed and I, of course, started thinking of Joni lyrics. When I approached Gaye to have my book signed, I introduced myself and told her that I work in the Dept. of Modern and Classical Languages and that I am Norma's (our dept. head) assistant and that I enjoyed her talk, etc. I told her I liked how Jack quoted Carly and then.... You guessed it. "I'm a big Joni Mitchell fan. Do you like Joni Mitchell?" Gaye, smiling: "I *like* Joni Mitchell!" I said: "Well, there are a lot of Joni lyrics I could quote from that relate to your book, but the first one that comes to mind is: "Big money kicks the wide wide world around." She nodded and agreed that that's a good one. (I could have gone on, of course, but held my Joni tongue. There was a line behind me.) After talking w/ a lot of people and purchasing the book, I hopped into my vehicle w/ the JMDL-approved tires for the night road home, and it suddenly occurred to me to look in the book to see what she had written. Maybe something about Joni! Nah, no such luck. "To Patti, who knows too much about universities." Last chance not lost, though. On November 10th Wally Lamb is having a book launch, and I will be there. "Wishing and Hoping." Last year we chatted up Joni but good when I had him Joni-sign his book for Smurf. It was November 11th, almost one year ago to the day. I think that night is going to be very hard for me. Gulp. Okay, I'd better sign off. Here come those tears again... Love, Patti P. I introduced my friend Sheramy Bundrick today at her book talk and signing to launch her new book Sunflowers: A Story of Van Gogh. She is our premiere Art Historian and it is a novel of historical fiction. A great read. I highly recommend it to everyone. The bonus DVD does include interviews with Joni, whose open admiration of Buffy's work is lovely and, as always, beautifully expressed. This is of the best and most thorough documentaries about a contemporary artist that I've ever seen - it enhanced my appreciation of Buffy beyond words and I've always been a fan (although I hadn't realized how great and generous an educator she has been and is). I would never have heard of this release had it not been for Jerry and the JMDL so thank you, thank you, thank you!
