I often miss Desert Island Disk, and have often thought what a pity it was that there was no better way to catch up... I am sorry, but the people you list are just about the only names I can remember who chose a Joni song. As I only about manage to hear 6 or 7 out of every 10 editions, I can well imagine that there must be more... Let me stick out my neck a bit further, after all those digs at Radio 4, and the Archers in particular (hi, Mike P!). OK, I know, this radio soap really sounds insincere and unrealistic a lot of the time. But I have decided I don't need to be too embarrassed about this "guilty pleasure". If others can get excited about men kicking a ball on some field, well then I can come out about getting some fine escapist enjoyment from following this often torturous story line. It is fun to imagine what "themes" the writers are dreaming up now, what surprises they are building up to, to spot inconsistencies in character development, to get caught by the odd moving moment, etc. For years, I worked all hours of the day and week, and my greatest moment of relaxation, amidst all the stress, was to have a lazy bubble bath on Sunday morning with first the Archers, and then Desert Island Disk. Nobody can tell me I did not deserve that enjoyment, or that I needed to be an octagenerian to enjoy it! (Besides, listening to a radio soap does not even require you to sit down and stare at a screen, so I rate it above addiction to TV soaps. TV soaps may be more gritty and realistic, but as a bit of fun, The Archers are OK in my book.) Lieve in London, without any street cred now. ________________________________ From: "Gertus@aol.com" To: joni@smoe.org Cc: lievereckers@yahoo.co.uk Sent: Tuesday, 13 October, 2009 16:03:12 Subject: Desert Island Discs and Joni In a message dated 13/10/2009 08:04:55 GMT Daylight Time, owner-joni-digest@smoe.org writes: PS I >just saw Joe Farrell's message about Desert Island Disk. It has to creep up on you and grow on you. I hated it first when I started listening, more than 25 years ago, when I came to the UK. But I was often too lethargic to switch it off (as I said, it's on the radio and you can do other things in the mean time!), and then one day I realised I was quite looking forward to hearing it again. Since then, characters have been born and grown up, script writers have come and gone, the style has changed quite a bit, and I have my innocent bit of fun. I think the trick is not to take it seriously, and to allow its weirdness to seduce you. By the way, the bit I dislike most of all is the totally naff theme music! Later, when the disc was stocked in Starbucks locations, the Seattle-based company slashed the price." The legal action comes a few months after Sonic Youth expressed disappointment at Starbucks' treatment of their "Hits Are For Squares" album, which they expected to sell big. Instead, band member Kim Gordon told Spinner , "It's impossible to find anywhere." Gordon also said, "[I]t took so long that by the time it came out their music division had been basically cut." And if you have the little packets of instant coffee, then you need hot water, right? So if you have hot water, then why can't you have regular coffee?
