I'll just paraphrase the conversation in short: Fallon, a budding singer, is talking with her father Wayne, himself a "has-been" local singer and guitar player. They discuss open tunings, and Wayne says something like: "Do you know Joni Mitchell got to as much as 50 different open tunings?" Fallon replies: "I will never achieve that...". Wayne: "You should listen to Joni, though. She's great." Fallon: "Yes, I've listened to Blue and love it" - Wayne: "That's' a classic..." I heard it yesterday (Sunday) morning in the omnibus edition, and then the next programme was Desert Island Disk with Steve Coogan as guest. His choice was pretty uninspiring, he did not come across as someone who really understands music but is just guided by memories of what he happened to have heard at certain important times in his life. So I was thinking: "What is the chance of him choosing a Joni song next?" - and wow, there it was: California! I think that, with her having been mentioned twice on a Sunday morning on 2 pretty popular programmes, there must be a good number of people who have decided "Hmm, must listen a bit more to that woman..." By the way, Jamie, I really think the BBC guy who said the average age of listener is 71 must have been making it up, to try and "up" his street cred. I have been listening since I got to England at the age of twenty something. It is always on in the house, and my sons love listening to shows like "Just a minute", "I'm sorry I haven't a clue" or "The Now Show". Many of my friends listen too, so there would have to be a hell of a lot of listeners well over 100 to make up that average! All the best, Lieve in London PS I just saw Joe Farrell's message about Desert Island Disk. Joe, I don't think this programme can be listened to again on BBCi. As far as I know, if you miss it on the Sunday, you have one more chance to hear the repeat on the following Friday morning, and that's it. But please let me know if there is another way, I would be very interested! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Oct 2009 10:11:51 -0400 From: Susan E McNamara Subject: RE: onlyJMDL Digest V2009 #274 Hi Lindsay, It was so great meeting you and thanks again for the ride to Idyllwild. I'm sorry you got lost going home. Bob and I got lost in San Diego for a brief half hour (Yikes!) but a kind bicyclist gave Bob directions and we made it in time for the plane. I believe the Good Vibrations from the Fest carried us home in good shape. I laughed at your son's Joni moment. As I've said before, Joni even transcends into heavy metal with her influence on Jimmy Page. Now that I've experienced playing electric with the VG-8 I may have to play Zeppelin at the next Jonifest. :-) Oh yeah, and Bob may be the King but I am not the Queen ... only She is Queen Undisputed Of Mind Beauty! :-) Love, Sue ___________________ /___________________\ ||-------------------|| || Sue McNamara || || sem8@cornell.edu || ||___________________|| || O etch-a-sketch O || \___________________/ "It's all a dream she has awake." - Joni Mitchell - ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 10 Oct 2009 13:53:05 -0700 From: "Lindsay Moon" Subject: Fest Report (late!!) & Joni on TV Well, I'm the latest one with any Fest report, am I not?? I think this movie has a piece of music in it that Joni has often referred to as something that influenced or inspired her when she was a kid. Something by Rachmaninoff? Am I imagining this?
