A Joni Tribute gig at the Cabbage Patch in Twickers. Les Sally Barker began writing songs and performing music at age 10, after being inspired by seeing English folk-pop singer Mary Hopkin on television. Her influences are varied, and include Bessie Smith, Bonnie Raitt, John Martyn, Aretha Franklin....and er, Joni Mitchell. Sally is well known to many folk fans as the original lead singer of The Poozies, an all-girl band which, at one time, included folk legends Kate Rusby and Karen Tweed. Sallys involvement with music, however, encompasses more than folk: spilling over into rock, blues, jazz and country as a songwriter of distinction as well as a talented and distinctive singer. Sally Barker rejoined The Poozies after having so much fun touring with the band in autumn last year. The Poozies decided to go for it as a 5 piece band again bringing back memories of the original line up, as per the BBC The Shetland Sessions. Throughout 2009 Sally will only be performing live (apart from selected concerts With The Poozies) as the Joni Mitchell Project, fulfilling a long-held ambition to present Jonis songs as close to their original form while, at the same time, breathing fresh life into familiar but much cherished songs. Big Yellow Taxi was one of the first songs Sally sang live and she has lost count of the times her voice has been compared to Jonis. When Sally was asked to perform Coyote as Joni in a tribute version of Martin Scorseses film The Last Waltz, research into the songs tuning refuelled that ambition. She will herself be playing Joni's guitar parts and accompanied by Glenn Hughes on keyboards and dulcimer. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Oct 2009 04:43:00 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Joni Tribute in London (Twickenham) Cool. Well. My current status on FB is : Rian Afriadi is playing all Joni Mitchell songs pre-Mingus era randomly. (now : Don't Interrupt The Sorrow). And then suddenly thinking about Catherine. followed with a little discussion with Lori and Rob. Then I suddenly remember that this is early October 2009, and that means this is my 2nd year on JMDL, a place where I "met" great people there. I also began to make association of several Joni songs with some folks here, and that means the image of that person always appears everytime I play that song. Like : Catherine with Don't Interrupt The Sorrow Patti with Twisted (that's because she often mentioned OobyShooby -- and she's a bit twisted, haha) Bob with Dancin' Clown (of course!) Mark (AUS) with Two Grey Rooms Laura with STAS Jenny with The Arrangements Les (UK) with The Magdalene Laundries (that's because Smurf once mentioned "Les sang like fallen women") Monika with Sweet Bird (one of my early discussion with her was about that song) Lori with Lakota Bene with Blue Motel Room (men har jeg ikke grund for det, Bene) Moni mit Amelia Les with Both Sides Now 2000 Jerry with any songs on FTR I can make a very long list. But it's 11.42 PM and I need to sleep :-D The point is, I love you guys! Thanks for this great two years. I'm still in a fog, I have been for a few days now trying to get used to not being surrounded by live music for pretty much all of my waking hours. Submersing myself in the pleasures of essence and soul took it's toll once I was no longer enveloped in the warmth of kindred spirits. It's amazing to me how such creative, unfettered individuals, independent and separate in our day to day lives can merge so seamlessly into a celebration of one woman's contributions to all of our existence. This was my third personal experience with the JMDL. Brad, my husband, hasn't experienced anything quite like a Joni Fest. We were both somewhat concerned that he wouldn't enjoy himself, wouldn't "fit in" but the moment he met Muller and realized that loving Joni doesn't limit one's musical horizons he felt right at home, he even found he knew some lyrics that he dredged from some dark deep place in his psyche. No worries, Brad had his cigars and a couple of beers and was happy among us all. Stepping off the plane in Palm Springs we were struck with a balmy 106 degrees. (I firmly believe the one true god is air conditioning.) We picked up our rental car, plugged in the GPS and headed off to the mountains. We took the southern route, we'd been told it was a beautiful drive and we weren't disappointed in the least. We crawled the canyons slowly, twisting and turning along the winding road which took us up to the top. We stopped at several vistas to take photos of the breathtaking views but were anxious to be "there" so we made them brief. We arrived at the Creekstone Inn and were welcomed immediately by several people; some I knew already and a couple that I introduced myself to. I had made everyone laminates for the weekend so I began handing them out to each person as they arrived... it was a great way to meet everyone. There was immediate music. Dave was busy setting up his recording studio and all around the main room people were busy tuning their guitars (not surprisingly a constant occurrence throughout the weekend). A few voices thrown into the mix and I felt right at home joining in to sing along. I am going to have to write in installments, I am still trying to digest everything and it comes back to me in rushes of memories. So many moments that are fixed in my mind and others that need to be dredged up from that warm, happy place inside me. More to come... NPIMH: Paz - Chinese Cafe Actions speak for themselves - echoing into eternity ~ me ~ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Oct 2009 13:55:48 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Best Fest in the West, part LAST Speaking of video, the Angela and Cassy videos came courtesy of Craig, Mr. Techie and also Mr. Newlywed. Hanging out with Craig and Laura is a lot of fun but a bit intimidating as both of them are about 8 feet tall. Laura was another one who jumped right in like she was just as crazy as the rest of us, which she just might be. And how cool to have Craig holding his laptop open Friday night so that Laura could watch the performances via Skype. I was sitting next to Craig, and every once in a while I would glance at the screen to see Laura enraptured with an ear-to-ear grin on her face which I have to say was pretty darn cool. Craig, I promised you that I'll make it to Austin in 2010 and I intend to keep that promise. What a joy to see you in such a happy place these days - happy the man indeed, and most deservedly so. Another JMDL couple that was there was Pearl and Steve from Florida. Pearl brought her photos from Jonifests past, including the FIRST JulieZWebb fest, and we spent a lot of time sharing memories and stories of over ten years' worth of Jonifests. Additionally, on Sunday Pearl performed a tribute to the late Mary Travers, singing a poignant lovely version of "Leaving On A Jet Plane". I have to say that her performance brought out some watery eyes as well. It had been awhile since I had seen Kate Bennett and Jeff Bisch (or Mr. & Mrs. Bennett as we called them). We were blessed with lots of music from both of them - I only wish they had been able to get more sleep so that I could have spent more time with them. And I was ecstatic that my good good pal (who never answers her phone) Jody could make it. Jody and I are so musically compatible it's scary, from Joni and Tom Waits to XTC, Stan Ridgway and The Replacements - like twin spirits of different Moms. I couldn't resist the many opportunities I had to just give Jody a hug, or squeeze her hand, or just share a smile. She is such a generous and kind person - Jody, you need to share your voice with us next time, maybe you and I can find a song to sing together (cue "I Never Talk To Strangers"). Speaking of JMDL gal-pals, I have to give a BIG shoutout to Sue McNamara, a true JMDL legend for being one of the first posters to all the work on the tabs to her guitar-playing and performances and for just plain being cool. It was my good fortune to be able to road-trip to the fest with Sue and also to head back down the mountain with her; and lucky for me she's an outstanding navigator or else I'd still be making lazy circles around Southern California trying to find my way. And the award for Hejira-travel-bravery HAS to go to Kay Ashley, who, like Joni, drove to the west coast starting from Maine. Kay is such a great singer, guitarist and songwriter but she is also a brilliant woman - one of the highlights of the fest for me was having wonderful conversation with Kay and just listening to her. Kay is also a skilled jeweler, and thanks to her bringing some of her crafts along I was able to get a gift for Mrs SCJoniguy without leaving the comfort of the Creekstone. Also traversing a great distance was the lovely Joni lookalike Lieve Reckers - a pleasure to be festing with her again and we picked right up where we left off at Lucyfest. I do have to say that we had a bit of a quarrel but hopefully that's over now that I have forgiven her for HER bad behavior. :o) Henning and his daughter Laura popped in on Saturday and we somewhat re-created the Beatles concert that was so much fun in England. Having been part of a Beatles cover band in Denmark, Henning can sing and play with ease and he's always in good spirits. Laura was just precious; I figured she would be bored silly but she seemed to really enjoy herself. I have to also thank Jimmy Stewart for tolerating me as a roommate; Jonifest for me typically means a steady stream of beers which translates to some serious snoring - Jimmy ran out of shoes and pillow to throw at me to get me to shut up...sorry about that, Jimmy. But at least we figured out how to turn off the TV again. So great you could make it and great to hang with you. It's always great to be anywhere with Paz, his bigger-than-life presence fills up a room, and he's so generous and accepting. His Sunday Joni set was great, from songs I have heard him do before ("Chinese Cafe", lovely as always) to a couple that were new to me like his butch version of "Woman Of Heart And Mind". And Paz owns the bar, serving up the finest margaritas and martinis you'll ever have. And of course, Michael can't go ANYWHERE without running into someone he knows in the world of music; this time 'round it was Kevin Danzig (of Pazfest CD fame) performing at the Cafe Aroma, right around the corner from where we were. Some of us walked over and caught his set, and then Kevin joined the party Sunday night, doing some originals and some Joni and even requesting ME to play Djembe for some of his songs...sweet! The food was outstanding; Robin and her crew kept us fed and while the meals were delicious, Robin made it all seem like a labor of love even though I know it was a LOT of work. We had fish tacos one night (with fish that Paz had grilled), delicious lasagna one night, and Sunday night we walked across the street and had a yummy dinner and left the cleanup to others. Breakfasts were a favorite of mine, with lots of fresh fruits and breads and orange juice that Robin would squeeze by hand. (And hard-boiled eggs that took forever to peel, but I won't mention that - ha!) And as much as I enjoyed Robin's food, the real joy for me was watching and listening to her Saturday night performance with Mutts Of The Planet. Much has been said about this show, so I won't go on and on but it was truly a precedent that will never be equalled. I can't even begin to imagine the hours and hours of practice and dedication that went into this performance. Every song was simply amazing, and to hear "Judgement" with the full woodwind/flute color was something I'll never forget. I can't wait to hear this show again and again. Robin's voice (not to mention that she is 'off-book' for the entire 3-hour 24-song show) is simply amazing, and you can't help but pick up on the joy she feels. Like she sang that night..."I'm a Lucky Girl, I found my band..." And Robin, you're Mom was SO adorable - bless her heart, she kept apologizing for no reason - I hope she enjoyed herself as much as we all enjoyed her being there. Boy, what else needs to be said...Lindsay, thanks again for taxiing me to the fest, it was so cool watching you taking it all in and having such a blast. I enjoyed walking into town and shopping with Kate, Jeff & Paz but as is usually the case I didn't do much sightseeing. The draw for me is almost always the people and not the geography. Besides, you could sit on the deck and feel the cool breezes and see the pine mountains, wildlife like jays and squirrels (both oversized) everywhere, and laughter and cold beverages flowing. The staff at the Creekstone couldn't have been nicer or more accomodating - Dave, two thumbs way up for a wonderful, memorable Jonifest. Hopefully you had as much fun as the rest of us did. I don't promise that this will have any structure; I'm just going to dive in and let stream of consciousness take over. Of course, it has to start and end with BIG BIG thanks to Dave & Robin for a job well done - more a labour of love than a job it would seem. I won't bore you with my travel details, except that I wish we could get to a point of common sense regarding airport security; taking off shoes, putting the appropriate sized bottles of liquids and gels in the appropriate sized ziploc baggies...Jeesus, it seems like the terrorists' biggest success has been making us all complacent and stupid, acting as though all of that madness makes sense and a 70-year-old with a pair of fingernail clippers represents some kind of threat. My flights were fine, although it was a bit disconcerting to look out the plane window and see a couple of fires once we hit the west coast. Lindsay was waiting for me at the San Diego Airport and Sue Mac was right behind. She actually surpised us; Lindsay had said that information had said she would be coming one way and the next thing we knew we heard a voice behind us saying "Do you guys know the way to Jonifest?" Soon we were road-tripping to Idyllwild and the conversation was flowing free and easy as it always seems to at these kinds of things. We spun the brand-new Charlie Dee Joni tribute CD and some other goodies along the way. After white-knuckling the windy, curvy road leading to Idyllwild, we arrived at precisely the same time as Kakki, Paz & Ashara, and of course greets and hugs ensued. The Creekstone was, as others have mentioned, a gorgeous venue and perfect in all respects - if only it had been a bit bigger to have housed all of the participants - some folks had to stay at satellite cabins that weren't exactly next door. I stayed in the "Fall" room (they knew that I would stagger and 'fall' into bed every night I suppose), decorated with autumnal colors, art and other symbols. The rooms were really nice and accomodating - but for me, the rooms are just a place to sleep and shower. I always try and maximize my non-room time as much as possible. I can't remember who all was there on Thursday and who came on Friday, all I know is how wonderful it was to see old friends and meet folks who I've "known" for a long time. One of the cool things about a 'mobile' fest is that it attracts folks locally who wouldn't necessarily want to extensively travel (especially when they have a lot of musical gear in tow). I was ecstatic to finally meet the legendary Steve Dulson and his wife Michelle; such a well-matched couple and a talented one too. Their set of authentic "folk"/Celtic music was one of my faves (who am I kidding? I loved them all!), and Steve's "dueling dulcimer" showdown with Delene was a genuine highlight. I got a glimpse at Steve's famed Concert database, which is truly amazing. As the preacher in "Tax Free" would say, "A hundred billion shows!" Big BIG thanks to Steve and Michelle for ferrying Sue & I to Palm Springs to snag our rental car; of course the road trip was a blast and we spun lots of Joni morsels along the way. Thanks also to Steve who, in the European tradition, would pop a top on a cold beer right after lunch so I never felt bad about being the first. Other first-time festers that I met; Jeannie, who was sort of the Greta Garbo woman of mystery at the fest, she did a lot of watching from the wings but I was also able to get some time talking to her and getting to know her better. She is a gentle and sweet loving spirit. I'm not sure how much luggage she brought but it seemed like she had a new outfit on almost hourly, I'm sure she set some kind of a Jonifest record in that category. And it was truly otherworldly when I stumbled downstairs Sunday morning for coffee and came upon Jeannie in the kitchen, holding a LIVE BIRD. That was also a first for me. Jeannie, you are one of a kind and I look forward to seeing you again. Lesli and her husband Pete were also there, and it was great to put a face with a name. Pete played drums for Paz and did a great job - both of them are very free-spirited and easy-going. Lesli, I will forever picture you in my mind with those beautiful aqua-colored "donkey beads". Part II to follow... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Oct 2009 13:53:33 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Best Fest in the West, Part II Thursday night's music was mostly spontaneous; I don't remember a lot of details except that one minute Barry & I were talking about Earth Wind and Fire, and the next minute Barry had worked out the piano chords to "That's The Way Of The World" and I was singing it...ahhh, such is the magic of Jonifest. I think Barry & Delene performed Thursday; I had already been blown away by them at Lucyfest, so I wasn't as surprised when Barry switched from flute to sax to keys, Delene switched from guitar to dulcimer, and they played a nice selection of Joni, classic folk-rock covers, and their own original work. They played a couple of sets over the weekend. Like Steve & Michelle, they are a couple that seemed destined for each other and seem to exist hand-in-glove. Then there were the people that I hadn't seen in forever, and I have to start with Kakki...so happy to see her, she has so many great stories and an easy laugh and spirit. I'm sure she holds the JMDL record for housing visiting JMDLer's, and she even offered to loan Sue and I her car to drive down to Palm Springs to pick up a rental car when we discovered that Lindsay (our ride) was leaving on Sunday (yikes!). Now how many people that own a beautiful Mercedes would offer it up like that? I rest my case. Anyway, I spent much time with Kakki out on the side deck, swapping stories and conversation, it reminded me of all those hours on Ashara's back porch. And that brings me to Mama Lion Ashara herself - Ashara doesn't read the list much, which is no big deal (as always she has a schedule that boggles the brain), and it's a true joy to watch her just be able to sit back and enjoy the fest, free woman in Idyllwild, nobody calling her up for favors and etc. I would have liked to see and hear her do a set because she's a very engaging and emotional performer. But like I said more than once, everyone has the right to enjoy the fest in their own way. And it was refreshing and fun to watch Ashara, Brad and Cassy playing cards most afternoons. I had only met Cassy briefly at the Carnegie Hall tribute but I've always felt a sense of kinship with her ever since I found out that she was familiar with Dearborn Heights Michigan and Pardee Elementary where I went to 2nd grade. But I digress...Cassy really dove in head first at this fest, making all kinds of giveaways (All-Access passes, Jonifest 2009 guitar pick keychains, and you know there may be more). She also singlehandedly put up a multitude of raffle items Saturday and we did a silent auction to raise some additional money for JM.com. Unfortunately, most of us there already had so much Joni schwag that our homes are already close to bursting with it. Having said that, I was delighted to win a Hejira song book, a very pretty framed Joni photo on cloth, and one of Kenny B's custom coffee mugs. (Sidebar to Kenny - the mugs were easily the most sought-after items of the raffle!). And as if all of that effort wasn't enough, Cassy also assembled a very beautiful set of music for Friday night. I'll let her provide the details, but as others have said, her singing came from such an emotional heartfelt place that she had us all in the palm of her hand and if there was a dry eye in the house I sure didn't see it. I was honored to be able to perform "Tax Free" with her (another fest-first) and as has been captured on the video that Craig took, it was a powerful performance and a BIG thanks to Mr. Blackburn for providing accompaniment for Cassy and for my set which immediately followed. I also have to add that Cassy's husband Brad was one of those JMDL spouses who jumped right in to the festivities and it was great meeting him; truly a good-hearted down-to-earth guy. My set was quite a tricky one...having discovered that Dave was a fellow Andy Partridge/XTC fan, we conspired at Lucyfest to perform an XTC song this time around. Since it's one that I love to sing, I picked "Scarecrow People", a brilliant but incredibly difficult tune. Like Dave said after our rehearsal, "three minutes to perform, three MONTHS to learn. And then, as has been widely publicized, I chose for my Joni song a selection that I've beaten up like Mike Tyson over the years, 'Dancin' Clown", just because. For one thing, I knew that Dave could play it (he is an AMAZING musician), and I thought it would be fun. And it was...I even threw in some dancing and I have to say that I did enjoy performing it although I felt like my voice was a bit rough. Of course, as has become a tradition, the 'song circles' are just as much fun as the more formal performances, and though the crowd was a bit smaller the fun was still the same. What a treat to have SO MUCH TALENT in the circle; Kate & Jeff, Paz, Kay, Dave, and of course the often-imitated but never-equaled Angela/Apod. It had been way too long since I was able to hang out with Angela; as has been said before, her abilities and repertoire are simply amazing. Pretty much it's "you say it, she'll play it", whether it's James Taylor, CSN, Led Zeppelin, Joni, you name it. And as the video proves, her performance of early Joni (Nathan LaFraneer & The Dawntreader among others) were simply breathtaking. And I have to add that I think she's just cute as a button - Saturday morning she was giving me a hard time for leaving the song circle early and heading to bed as she and Kay ended up in the hot tub. Well, when I write my book of regrets, missing that experience will probably start my list!
