That should be Jimmy. Jimmy was on my mind but i don't know why or how I wrote Laura instead :-D Probably because i'm too overjoyed with the irony. Mr. Muller sang Dancin' Clown? Hahaha... I'm still laughing at it :-D Rian PS. Anyway, I just watched Into The Wild, there was a character mentioning Joni Mitchell. I guess the mention has been discussed before. Just reporting a my own head experience. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Sep 2009 09:01:59 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: Bob's "Dancing Clown" True, true...I just thought it would be a hoot to perform the song that I had beat up so badly all these years, and I knew that Dave could play it, so why not? I originally wanted to give it a swing arrangement ala Sinatra, but in rehearsals it didn't work so Dave & I decided to just play it straight up. It was fun, and maybe part of me thought that by performing the song I'd gain a deeper appreciation of it. Didn't happen. Still, twas fun just to play off everyone's reactions. Speaking of Dave - last night's performance time was slotted to Dave & Robin's band "Mutts Of The Planet", they did a 24-song set which Dave was recording for release. It was unbelievably amazing, and leaned heavily on jazzy Joni, there was a drummer, 2 woodwinds, bass/synthesizer, piano, background vocalist/guitarist, and Dave on an array of guitars and Robin singing. They opened with "Shadows And Light" and took off from there. The highlights for me; a 15-minute jam on Dreamland with a funk riff inspired by the song - Jungle Line complete with all of the rhythms and drumming and everything else, Chair In The Sky with some incredible keyboard work by Barnaby Finch, and Woodstock, which also became a jam with Dave inserting a little Pinball Wizard just to ratchet up the rock level a tad. And of course there was the song circle following...Angela, Sue Mac, Dave, Paz and a couple of others carried on til around 3AM, playing Neil Young, Stevie Wonder, Led Zeppelin, and everything else you can imagine. Those of you who have done this know what it's like. The weather couldn't be nicer here; sunny, warm with a coolish breeze - I'm off to breakfast now and looking forward to another day in Jonifest paradise. Mutts of the Planet were so damn good last night. It was like a mini version of PWWAM except Joni not being there.,,,,,,, an excellent concert, and Dave and Robin in peak style. The band was so excellent, I can't even describe it. As for the song circle ,it was so much fun , I even sang. " in the far background" so nobody could hear me, but I loved it. Still sleep deprived, but WELL worth it!!!! And now, more reason for us all to love her, from her new book, Wishful Drinking: "On top of all this celebrity parents and Star Wars stuff, apparently I was once married to a brilliant songwriter, a rock icon of sorts. I mean, this man who wrote an array of beautiful songs, and even a few songs that were about me. How incredible is that? And get this - I had always been a big fan of his music. Huge. As a teen, it was just him and Joni Mitchell. And, as I couldn't marry Joni, I married him." - -- Jerry ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Sep 2009 18:25:31 +0000 (GMT) From: Lieve Reckers Subject: quick Jonifest report Not sure what has already been reported so far, because I am on digest, but I thought I should send you my personal snippets while I sit here in bed, on Sunday morning in my "Spring" room. (Every bedroom in the Inn has a theme, such as "Wildlife", "Out West" etc, and the interior completely matches the theme, so I am surrounded by pictures of spring flowers, the walls are lined with picket fences full of twigs and flowers, the bedding is all soft green with flowery pillows, and there are even little bird nests on the bedside table...) I know this is a music group and not an interior design convention, but do bear with me! I am sharing a room with Jeannie, who got up earlier than me, and a little while ago she came back into the room, telling me she had rescued a little bird who had been stuck on the deck downstairs, looking very weak. She had given him some water in our room (while I was asleep) and he had flown away somewhere in our room. So Jeannie was searching the whole bedroom, especially amidst all the twigs and bird nests, and finally found him in the bathroom. As far as I could tell it was a green finch. It was incredible, this little green-yellow bird in her hand with a long thin beak and bright eyes, he looked like the bedroom had been especially set up to welcome him in style. Jeannie held him softly in her hand, I advised her to let him drink as much as possible, and he gobbled up a lot more water and then looked very peeky again, so she has just gone out and let him fly off again. It was such a lovely gesture. Thank you Jeannie, for producing magic in this Springtime room! But back to Joni content, and wow, talk about producing magic, Robin and Dave's concert last night was really It! I am not very good at music reviews, and I am sure others will describe it much better, and maybe you will get to hear the recording, but I must say: this was the biggest musical treat ever! I had already heard Robin and Dave at the UK fest last year and so my expectations were high, but I was literally blown away with their show! They had up to 9 people in the band, including a fantastic sax player, keyboard player, bass player, etc. Dave is an amazing musician who has created a really "cooking" band, full of affinity with Joni's music. They did Joni classics like Blue and River, but also pieces like Judgment of the Moon and Stars, A Chair in the Sky, Jungle Line etc, and even an instrumental jazzy version of BSN. It was the ultimate Joni Mitchell concert as Joni couldn't present it herself at this stage (and I say that with due respect for where Joni is now, and appreciating the music she is producing now). In the end, the greatest credit for this experience has to go to Robin. She is the most gifted, sensitive singer anybody could wish for to cover the whole range of Joni's songs. When earlier I went to the shop across the road from the Inn, the man there asked whether we were "from the Joni crowd", and when we said yes he started raving about Robin, how much she is loved in Idyllwild. He put it so right when he said: "Robin channels Joni". I was going to keep this short. I can see blue sky and pine trees out of my window, there is a great breakfast waiting, so I want to get up and dive into the day. But quickly a few more credits. First of all Cassy, who has been an angel, contributing so many items for the auction/raffle and organising it all for the benefit of the website. (And to Kenny B, who was not at the fest but contributed some wonderful mugs with pictures of album covers: you are onto a winner there, mate! We were fighting over them!) It's already been mentioned but I need to say it too: Cassy's performance was so moving, you could hear a pin drop. Tears ran. She sang from the heart, with a clear sensitive voice, often looking straight into her husband's eyes who was justly very proud and moved. Everybody's performance has been great, I have enjoyed them all: Paz playing guitar and piano at many times of the day, Bob Muller and his dancing clown, Sue McNamara, Steve and Michelle (especially their duelling dulcimers!), Barry and Delene, 2 great musicians in their own right, who are always there to help out, etc - I am sure I am now forgetting some names that I will kick myself for when I press "send" - oh yes, and Dave also had some of his recording artists come and do a set, again each time a treat of a truly professional show - my goodness where does all this talent keep coming from! But to end, I just want to salute our JMDL list itself: all the wonderful people who make part of it, whether they are here (such as sweet Jody, the Finder of Lost Objects) or only here in spirit (such as Patty P, who sent us all two dozen glorious roses that were right up there on stage when the music was played - and while I think of it I am going to make sure they get some more water). Thank you to Dave and Robin for all the work of putting this on for us. It's been SO worth it! And yes, there is another day of it, so I need to get out of bed and jump right in! Lots of love to all, Lieve ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 27 Sep 2009 21:22:43 EDT From: PassScribe@aol.com Subject: Re: SoCal Fest Pix Okay, so how would I see the photos of SoCal JoniFest posted on Face Book?
