Dissing Woodstock Nation Patti and Em I had a read of this article (a day late, as always, being a digester rather than a real timer, sorry to be such a light weight!!)and felt really sad rather than angry. That was my reaction to the 'spiritual slop.' (What a great phrase, Em). Then, some 6 days late, I turned over the page of the calendar which sits by my computer to reveal September. The calendar was a gift from a friend who is a Buddhist nun and has helpful, thoughtful lines for each month. (Makes a change from last year's calendar 'Biker Boys From Hell, which I won't tell you about now, though many readers may find it more interesting :))) The saying for September was from the Dhammapada verse 49 - and I thought, in the light of having just read the article, it was just what I needed! I thought I'd pass it on to you. So, here is September's saying from my calendar: "As a been gathering nectar does not harm or disturb the colour and fragrance of the flower, so do the wise move through the world." I hope you like it too. Mind you, it's worth remembering how hard it is to be a bee these days. Hugs and love Anita _____ I am using the Free version of SPAMfighter . She then was driven off back to her hotel BUT we were in the arena and it was such a chance to bag the best places for the gig! We decided to take a risk so Steph stayed on in the arena after the sound check, helped out and looked like she was official whilst I went back to the get the bags and camera we'd left outside. Steph was in the arena for about four or five hours and nobody asked her to leave because she was helpful, I guess! Hi Anita! What a GREAT story!!! I love it! So cool Steph stayed in the arena, and I love it that she was helping out. The whole adventure made Rainy Night House play in my head. Thanks so much for sharing! If the rest of the concert approches this kind of musicianship, I'm gonna have a nice afternoon of listening once the lawn is cut! Thanks Bob! Laura Do you know, Laura, I was thinking about that very thing. I remembered Les sending me an email ages ago because the Edmonton Journal piece had come to light and asked if the Anita in it was me. YES of course, I proudly said! Today, out of interest, I went on and checked out the chronology on jonimitchell.com and there was the Edmonton Journal piece with an invitation to comment. I think I should write it out and I sure do have some pictures. It's interesting because I also started to write my own arrangement of 'Woodstock' after that gig in Edmonton. It was the first time I'd seen Joni sing 'Woodstock' on the guitar and I found Joni's rendition that night very haunting and, to me, it sounded pretty grim. None of the youthful optimism I heard in the original all those years ago. Of course it was also 25 years after Woodstock so the verse (to the same verse tune of Woodstock) I added was: "I saw Joni sing one August And it was 25 years on When this song cracked through the night air On the whiplash of her tongue. The chords rang hard and cynical Soft grey clouds hung in her eyes But I could see butterflies through Canadian twilight. We sang: We're stardust etc" I think I wanted to hang on to the optimism! Also, in the light of Patti's reference to the article sent to the njc ist about dissing Woodstock that Em described as from the guy's 'spiritual slop bucket' it all comes together for me today.
