In that spirit, I wanted to pass along that today's MP3 Daily Deal at Amazon is the 35-song collection "The Complete Billie Holiday." So help us all, the price is $2.99. Anything that claims to be The Complete Anything probably isn't, and that would seem to be true here; all these selections are from her Verve years. And the customer reviews on this range from five stars ("the best Billie Holiday") to one star ("Avoid at all costs.") But I listened to a few samples and decided a download was in order. I think it'll tide me over until I can get "The Complete Billie Holiday As Channeled by David Sedaris." If you're interested, go to Amazon.com, then Digital Downloads, then MP3 Downloads. Most of them don't sound like Verve era Billie Holiday. They are from her Brunswick/Vocalion years, mostly recorded in the 1930s and early 40s. Those recordings were acquired by Columbia records and re-issued on cd and vinyl under that label. You are right in that there is no 'complete' Billie Holiday collection, Janet. She recorded for several different labels throughout her career. Verve released a box set of their 'Complete' Billie Holiday and it is 10 cds, I believe. The Columbia recordings were about 9 cds when they first released a series of all of those records. And that's not to mention her brief stint at Decca and the sides she did for Commodore. But this looks like a great collection. Some really choice cuts mixed in with some more obscure ones. But just from scanning the play list, I don't think there is a bad one in the lot. Well worth the price, imo. Is it on the website somewhere? It may get some anima uprising, uprising in some of you tonight, too, so "don't say I didn't warn ya!" It's probably better to ignore such a person (who must be one of those people passing on the right), but I just had to share, looking for comfort and consultation here on the JMDL.
