It's incredible, but Obama's health plan, and with it his entire Presidency, could be derailed if big corporations and the radical right manage to convince Americans that the NHS is a nightmare rationed service that refuses to treat patients and abandons the most needy, such as Stephen Hawking, without care. *We need a huge popular outcry to show the truth -- how proud and grateful we are in the UK to have a public healthcare system that works, despite its imperfections.** Sign on to the message to America* and forward this email - -- if enough of us sign, we'll cause a stir in US media and help change the debate: http://www.avaaz.org/en/reform_health_care_uk US healthcare is run by large corporations - it's the most expensive in the world, but ranks 37th in quality, and 40 million Americans can't afford any care at all. It's an awful system for people, but corporations make enormous profits, so they're fighting to keep it. If they win and Obama fails, the Democrats could lose the Congress in elections next year. *If this happens, progress on every global issue is endangered, from climate change to the war in Iraq.* *We have no time to lose.* Industry lobbyists are ramping up their smear campaigns right now to make sure the Obama plan is dead on arrival when Congress meets in September. Americans are hearing a constant barrage of propaganda that the NHS is a nightmare. Let's say it ain't so below: http://www.avaaz.org/en/reform_health_care_uk The NHS isn't perfect -- but it works far better than the US system. *Let's stand up to the lies, and help save Obama's movement for change with the truth about the UK's healthcare system.* With hope, Brett, Ricken, Benjamin, Alice, Graziela, Paula, Paul, Pascal and the whole Avaaz team. Masur is a fan of Bruce Springsteen is just about the epitome of understatement. Masur, the William R. Kenan Jr. professor of American institutions and values at Trinity College, is so taken with Springsteen's work that he has merged his academic research with his favorite artist. The result is Masur's latest book, "Runaway Dream: 'Born to Run' and Bruce Springsteen's American Vision" (Bloomsbury Press, $23), set for publication Sept. 1. It's an exceedingly detailed analysis of the singer's breakthrough album: how it was created, its cultural context and what it means today. "Writing it was just an absolute labor of love for me," Masur says from New Jersey during a conversation about his research..." It's a short album though. I guess I don't think it's as big of a departure as most people. She had already contributed her take on "Twisted". That should have been a clue about where she was headed. She had already put jazz-like touches on the "Court and Spark", "Miles Of Aisles", "The Hissing of Summer Lawns", "Hejira", and "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" albums. On those albums, she put jazz-like touches on pop records. With Mingus, she had pop touches on a jazz album. (Some folks don't think it's a jazz album.) I didn't think it was a huge departure, but rather, a logical extension of where she had already been. If there's anyone new to the list who hasn't read the review of Mingus by downbeat magazine, it's positive and its home is: http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=951&from=search The JMDL site appears to be down right now but JM.com is okay. I got a lovely and convincing email from Jody (hi Jody if you're reading) suggesting that i join, and i almost did. The problem is this - as soon as i join i bet you that the next big "online social revolution" will take place which everyone will join and i'll still be trying to figure out how to get best use out of such a heavy looking webpage as facebook when the tumble weed blows by.
