I'm fairly excited today because Joseph Palis from Chapel Hill, who used to be subscribed to this list, will be playing on air the music of my old friend Jim Neversink, who is a very talented singer-songwriter and guitarist, living in Johannesburg, but hopefully to break out from there very soon. It's the first time Jim's music is played in the US, and Joseph seems pretty excited about it so I'm hoping he will give it a really good introduction. Jim and I go back a long time; I have mentioned him a few times here on the list, but when I joined four years ago I was actually very intent on not bringing him up. We had just had a very bad fall-out, and I needed to talk to people about other things - plus I didn't want my name occurring next to his in any google searches, performed by any girlfriends.... Curiously, the few times I did mention him the digest somehow made it to the public domain! Also, first time I mentioned him and thought it was safe, because I thought everyone else on the list were Americans, Ron Greer from Johannesburg (where Jim is from) wrote back straight away and said he was actually planning to attend the next Jim Neversink gig... I wrote back and said, please tell me all about it, but while you are there, please don't mention my name. Ron attended the gig, intent on not mentioning my name, but as he was getting into his car at the car park after the show, Jim came over and started talking to him - although they had never met before! I just find it intriguing how this man's name is strangely intertwined with the list - I caught up with Joseph last week, via Oddmund, and I recommended Jim's facebook page where some of his songs are up. He wrote back very excited and said he would definitely play his music on his next show, and later remind people that they had heard this superstar (Joseph's very words) for the first time on his show! What makes it especially exciting is that there is a new CD coming out which was produced by a certain Richard Lloyd, who played alongside Tom Verlaine in the punk-band Television, back in the eighties. A private investor paid for Lloyd to be flown into Joburg to record and produce the album. They say it sounds awesome, and they are hoping for an international release and well-deserved breakthrough. Joseph wrote to me that he found Jim's sound similar to that of Verlaine, but he liked his timbre better. Huh..! Josephs show is WXYC 89.3FM 3-6pm ET (it can be streamed live, that will be 8-11 PM in continental Europe...). Love to all from Bene Who is careful not to hyperventilate today ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 13 Aug 2009 08:00:42 -0400 From: Bob.Muller@Fluor.com Subject: Re: Half a million strong NJC <(Gee, I hope that works. But through the wonders of Spotify I have had a chance to reacquaint myself with some of the less flogged items in Abba's back catalogue. Oh boy! If anyone is geuinely curious as to why they are held in high regard by many, please have a listen to The Name Of The Game or The Day Before You Came.
