It seems your ISP won't accept mail from me. My ISP (iiNet) is looking into it but, so far, they are baffled by it. To answer your question, no, I don't have that particular interview with Joni. The only recordings I have of Joni being interviewed in Australia are the one from the Today Show and the one from Rock Arena. I just wanted to warn you that he now plays heavy metal, which I doubt is what you would expect if you are familiar with his older material. I've been bitterly disappointed and left the show half way as I found it unbearable. Check youtube for recent stuff and judge for yourself. Laurent ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Aug 2009 06:07:37 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Joni Covers #115 - No more calls, we have a winner http://tinyurl.com/ncjfgw Hello again from Joni Covers Central, where the Joni covers continue to pour in, from past & present and all around the globe - for August 2009 I am proud to present Volume 115, another collection of various and sundry tributes to Siquomb, with many rarities and interesting recordings. I want to thank long-time helpers Mark-Leon & Monica for their help with this one and for their continued assistance. So let's get right into it - here's the blow-by-blow for this month's gathering of Joni covers - the link to download and listen to them is: http://tinyurl.com/ncjfgw If you like what you hear - and I bet you will - check out the "Joni Undercover" section for artist websites, additional information and such. Feel free to support the folks who keep Joni's music evergreen. Here's the table of contents this time 'round: 1. Kate McGarry - The Priest: A stunning opener. Jazz vocalist Kate McGarry first wowed us with her Chelsea Morning cover back in 2005 - this one (and a very deep track at that) comes from her 2008 Grammy-nominated album titled "If Less Is More, Then Nothing Is Everything" (love that title). Kate and the various players on this track really flesh out the melody and rhythms and expand it into a myriad of possibilities, lots of colors pop in and out on this one. 2. Jerry Lamberth - Daisy Summer Piper: Yet another JMDL exclusive, and a Joni song that most of us have NEVER heard! Jerry sent me this recording which he did based upon hearing a recording of Joni's performing the song live. It's a pretty song, a lovely melody that reminds me of mid-60's pop music which is appropriate as that's when it was conceived by Joni. Jerry's voice falls easily on the ear, and he's done a nice production job of overdubbing his own background voices. 3. Jessica Ottosson & Peter Tegner - Both Sides Now 4. Jessica Ottosson & Peter Tegner - River 5. Jessica Ottosson & Peter Tegner - A Case Of You: More new music, all three of these lovely tracks come from Jessica & Peter's 2008 album titled, coincidentally, Both Sides Now. Hailing from Sweden, Peter provides guitar and Jessica provides voice, and both are quite pretty. Sweets from the Swedes! 6. Darrell Scott - Urge For Going: Staying with 2008 releases, here's another excellent addition to the Joni covers library. A multi-talented songwriter in his own right (check out his website and see who all he's written for), Darrell is one of Nashville's premier studio musicians too as he plays a plethora of instruments. This upbeat bluegrass take on UFG incorporates some excellent mandolin, fiddle and other acoustic pickin' sounds guaranteed to set you toes to tappin'. 7. Enrico Amato - Both Sides Now: Though his name sounds very European, Enrico is a native of Canton, Ohio. Having a first name of Enrico would certainly be daunting for a singer, but Amato does indeed have a powerful voice, bringing to mind the timbre and emotional tones of Gino Vanelli. This vocal/piano duet is quite lovely. 8. Andromeda Turre - Twisted: A straightforward vocal reading of the Annie Ross/Wardell Gray classic. She's got a nice energetic delivery and the piano/drum/bass trio behind her provides a solid canvas, adding a nice piano solo into the mix. 9. Tommy Jay - Dreamland: This one is a bit of an oddity, officially released on cassette in 1986 and getting a digital release in 2007. Tommy takes great liberties with the lyrics, changing them to give the song more significance to him, I suppose. Musically it sounds more like the version on the Hissing Demos than what Joni released on DJRD. Still, it's kind of fun. 10. Chateau Beach & Russ Kunkel - Carey: Those of you who read record jackets and liner notes like they were newspapers or box scores will recognize the name of Russ Kunkel. Probably most famous for his contributions to James Taylor's albums (on drums), he also played drums on Joni's Blue and in general was a BIG part of the West Coast pop/jazz crowd (and still is for that matter). This extended lite-jazz instrumental version of Carey comes from his 2008 release, wherein he covers many popular songs that he contributed to in their earlier incarnations, by the likes of Joni, Taylor, CSN, Jackson Browne, Carole King, and others. It's certainly a unique & pretty track, a bit too homogenized for my tastes but well done nonetheless. 11. Larry Roy & Steve Kirby - Both Sides Now: I can't believe that Mags has not mentioned WINNIPEG'S jazz duo Larry Roy & Steve Kirby and their contribution to the world of Joni covers! This 7-minute plus take on BSN is very nice, highlighted by some lovely vibe work and a fine vocal, the album this is from is another 2008 release. Almost 650 recordings of BSN and yet artists can still make it fresh & new & bring new insights to it. Amazing. 12. George Maurer Jazz Group - River: This 2007 recording comes from George's "Sniff The Mitten" Holiday album, recorded live at The Dakota. George's piano skills on this track will blow you away, and the vocals and harmonies are beautiful too. The flow and pacing of this one is also noteworthy as the song flows and crescedos, much like the river being about. 13. Mhmm - Woodstock: From Germany comes yet another 2008 recording, this one combines the harmonies of CSNY with a blues riff and a Scorpions-like vocal. I like the energy, the harmonies, and the overall feel of it. Listen for stray flute, sax, piano and slide licks thrown in for good measure. 14. Charlie Dee - Blue 15. Charlie Dee - Cherokee Louise 16. Charlie Dee - Coyote: Dutch jazz singer Charlie Dee (this is definitely a FEMALE Charlie) is a huge Joni fan and has done a whole tour of Holland with her Joni tribute show. These unreleased recordings were in conjunction with these performances. She's got a nice quality in her voice, reminding me at times of Melanie Safka, and her band is very capable too. 17. CC Ryder - Both Sides Now: We close 115 out with an obscure 70's recording of the franchise - CC's voice is quiet and folk-like and the guitar work is nice. Enjoyable in its simplicity. And that brings this chapter to a close, more fodder into the canon of Joni covers. Hope you liked it, some of it anyway, and thanks as well for reading my ramblings. We'll re-visit an oldie but goodie in a couple of weeks and another new collection in a month. The promoters aim to set prices at the top of the curve to maximize their profits. Setting the price at what the market will bear. If the shows sell out, they're better off getting $350/ticket as opposed to selling them for $75 or so. It's just good old greed at work. Having said that - artists play a big role in the pricing structures. The artist can control the pricing structure as they see fit - Springsteen's tour is an example of that, tickets to his shows are priced from $29 - $96. Either Van doesn't involve himself in the process or he has an over-inflated sense of his worth. He still puts on a great show if the reviews are to be believed. Yes. In the tradition and spirit of helping and encouraging our own, I am sharing the following: http://www.pmc.org/profile/MM0438 Maggie is, as you know, "a pretty good cook" at various Jonifests (even though Smurf once wrote that "Maggie hasn't done a f#$%ing thing all day!"). She has raised $2,385 so far towards her goal of $3,000. Wouldn't it be cool if the JMDL could put her over the top? I know we all come from such different sets of financial circumstance these days, so if you can't give money, just send her your good vibes -- your confidence, babies, and the gift of your extra time. She is doing a wonderful thing. And we all know that if Smurf were still on this marbled bowling ball, he'd be pedaling next to her, or at least handing out water bottles or *something*. I'm not tagging this NJC because I think there are a lot of Joni-onlies who would want to know about this. Ride, Maggie, ride! Love, Patti P. P.S. This is a bit of personal synchronicity for me.
