One week (day) last summer, Smurf called me on his babbling cellphone. It very well could have been a year ago today. He told me was going to see Mamma Mia and he was decidedly NOT happy about it. It was his friend J's turn to pick the movie. Not Smurf's Choice. About an hour after our conversation, I was traveling in my vehicle when my cellphone rang. I couldn't find it quickly enough in my satchel, so I pulled over into a paved paradise. The screen said "Smurf". So I quickly called him back and he was unusually grouchy. I asked him why he called and he said: "I didn't call you just now. I called you an hour ago." I said: "Yes, you just called. My phone says!" He insisted that he did not, so I said: "Okay, okay. Well, have fun at the movie." I don't remember his exact words but they were something like "Yeah, right." Later he told me that it was fun and that he actually enjoyed it. So there ya have it. He likes it! Smurfy likes it! Smurfa Mia! ; ) And don't get me going on John McCain. Out of the fire like Catholic saints comes Parlette and her deep complaint. I've reconnected with an old friend of my brother Richard. Gary?was a waiter there and said that Joni and Mamma Cass and company would frequent the place. It was painted solid black inside and out. I'd pay 100 dollars, without hesitation, to see a full Joni show in a reasonably small place, by which I simply mean NOT a big sports arena. (Actually, as the United Center show was over 50 and worth every penny, maybe I should reconsider that.) From there, as the price got higher the venue would become more important. Not a particularly 'deep' song. Just a simple lyric about a young woman who loves a 'young man that I know, his age is 21' and who 'loves his damned old rodeo as much as he loves me.' But it has a pretty melody and Judy's version of it just makes me feel good. It's a favorite of mine. For 70 years old, this woman's voice is in remarkably good shape. She did re-arrange the melody somewhat, maybe to avoid the sustained climbing notes at the end of the phrase 'he's driving in tonight from Cali-for-nia' (original melody climbs up on Cali-for -nia, drawing out the last two syllables) but she did it with such grace and ease that I didn't really care. And she did hit that last 'some-DAY soon' (caps where the high note is) with relative ease. That is probably the highest note in the song. (Not a musician here though I can read music and fool around on my keyboard a bit.) And she looks gorgeous. No work done on that face. Every line of her sometimes tough life is there. But it's a gloriously lovely face, framed by her beautiful grey-streaked, long, flowing hair. The face of a woman who has laid her demons to rest and survived to find some peace of mind. That's my impression of her, anyway. But I think musically she's stuck in a bit of a time-warp. Her comment about 'Shine' doesn't particularly surprise me. Especially when she followed it up with 'I'm very locked into those early years of hers.' And I somehow get the impression that Judy and Joni aren't all that chummy these days. Maybe a little resentment over comments about 'Mitchell, whose songs helped make Collins famous and who then got famous herself.' That remark "We're certainly civil to one another. I write her notes saying, 'You're brilliant, you're brilliant, I love you, I love you, thank you, thank you, thank you.';" somehow seems - a bit much, shall I say, and leave it at that? With all due respect to Ms. Collins, Im "very locked into" her early years as well. She started to lose me with Judith, although that record has its moments.
