I DO think it's possible for the deftest of talents to manipulate the most insipid of material to the point where it can sway even the most steadfast (see definition of propaganda). The thought of myself smiling and dancing in the aisles to that stuff so frightens me, that I fear I would not be able to look myself in the mirror the next morning. I am very surprised that Meryl Streep accepted that role in the film, given she knows what good music is (I sat behind her at the Joni/Dylan show in 1998 at Madison Square Garden and still look forward to the opportunity to apologize to her for screaming so loud in her ears. -- Oh yes, Meryl stayed for Joni but left before Dylan. Her daughter remained.) CC _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live SkyDrive: Store, access, and share your photos. But when I saw the trailers for the movie, I had to go. There is just something about Greece, I think. It's one of my dreams to go there one day and cruise to various islands where it seems that the sun always shines and the sky and water are always blue. The plot is thin - extremely thin! - and most of the actors can't sing, but I loved Meryl Streep and Christine Baranski. I suppose it's complicated trying to take a bunch of songs that aren't particularly related and then weave a story around them. We saw it at the cinema and actually ended up buying the DVD when it came out - that's how much we liked it (my daughter and I, that is. Matthew doesn't get it.) So, I guess you CAN teach an old dog new tricks and never say never and other expressions of that kind. I like when that happens. Despite all, I still don't care for ABBA. Oh, i rolled my eyes when it started and looked at one of my friends to communicate "i'm choosing the movie next time", soon i was tapping my foot, theni found myself swaying, then singing along, and all but dancing in the aisles;-) total rubbish, but enjoyable. I read somewhere that Meryl Streep had wanted a part in a musical and had hoped for the part of Mrs. Lovett in Sweeney Todd, which went to Helena Bonham Carter. So she pursued the Mamma Mia role. I largely agreed to see it because she was in it. I don't know how anyone can hate ABBA though. Catherine - Greece is stunning. Dermot and I took two weeks in Zakynthos last month just after i handed in my dissertation (passed my viva on Monday!). I have very slowly been uploading the pictures onto my flickr account. I've been meaning to share this with you. "Couldn't Keep It To Myself". Recently I was standing in line at Proud-headed Queen "Lizzie's Curbside Cuisine" quick lunch stand right behind Suzy Staubach, the head of General Books at the UConn Coop. Very cool lady who loves books and who is held in high esteem in these parts. http://advance.uconn.edu/2008/080929/08092911.htm Feeling not too shy that day, I introduced myself and told her how much I enjoyed Wally's last talk and book-signing. And this she told me: He is writing a new book! A short one. The publisher's deadline is/was tomorrow (this was in June, I think). It is supposed to come out before Christmas. It is about a man who is the fifth cousin of.....hold on to your mouse ears hat, Chuck E. Mouseketeer Wannabe.....Annette Funicello! I just googled for information, and found this: Wishin' and Hopin', on sale 11/10/2009. DUSTY! Something tells me we're into something good. And then I got lost in youtube land. Here is a quick one. There are quite a few. We all know that Wally gets his titles from songs, but I never knew that it was Emmylou's (Hi BB and KB!) version of Amazing Grace that gave us his last title. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r3Cc8W7su9E&NR=1 Wally is a total sweetheart. He has heart, and humor, and humility. Of course I get all choked up (She's Come Undone) "deja-vu all over again" whenever I see that book cover ("THE BOOK!", to quote Jody...hugs, BG and Kay and Ashara!), remembering our long conversation, comfort and consultation at the book-signing on November 11th when we chatted up Joni In Fiction and Smurf and all. How he winced when I told him the sad news. **** For Bob Murphy -- Joni did NOT attend Woodstock -- I know this much is true -- but maybe she was there in spirit? Wally Lamb ***** Darn right! I have always liked Abba (they were my first musical love at the age of 8 or so), and was looking forward to the movie. But the plot was incredibly thin, and Pierce Brosnan was painful in the extreme. The man most definitely CANNOT sing. But any movie with Meryl Streep, Christine Baranski and (most of all) Julie Walters is a must-see as far as I'm concerned. I was at Welford RAF in Berkshire, England when the British Invasion was happening except there was an invasion right there which was also happening. I will never know what it was like to be in the U.S. when the Beatles played at Shea Stadium or on the Ed Sullivan Show, but I have good memories of standing in a circle with my older sister's friends, looking at an 8x10 glossy our family friend who worked for the BBC was able to get for us and screaming the name of my favorite Beatle (Paul) as if he could hear me! We walked up-base together to see "Hard Day's Night" and it was almost like seeing them live! They were definitely the cat's meow!!!! Great info about Walter Cronkite's interview with the Beatles!!! Right on Walter! I was watching a clip of his reaction to seeing men walk on the moon...priceless!!! What a legend! He will never be forgotten. Maybe there's an irony there. Don't know. We had seen the movie in the theater and we both had enjoyed it. While he was in the hospital, he insisted that I buy the BluRay, which I did. We haven't watched it yet. He doesn't remember most of the 2 or 3 weeks after he fell. I wrapped the d****d dvd up and was going to take it to him in the hospital on Christmas as a joke. But he wasn't in much of a mood for jokes on that snowy (shudder) Xmas day. So I left it in my bag . But Travis is fine now. And I am very grateful for that. And so much for my 'Mama Mia' story which you have probably all heard before. I agree with you about Greece, Catherine. This movie shows it off to wonderful effect. One shot in particular seems to be right out of 'Carey' - 'the night is a starry dome.'
