What does Joni mean, within the context of the song when she sings "The thumb and the satchel Or the rented Rolls-Royce". I have no idea. I know what they all are, thumbs, satchels and Rolls Royces but draw a complete blank when I try to get a sense of what she means. Is she talking about hitch-hiking, being known and folks putting there thumbs up or down when they see her? What's the Satchel about is it another word for a rucksack? Am I Stupid? Awaiting your thoughts, musings or inside knowledge! Ps. The last question was rhetorical! So yes, it is similar to a rucksack. In the previous lines, Joni is talking about the waitresses, saying there is 'No trouble in their faces, not one anxious voice None of the crazy you get from too much choice' To me she is saying that these women are grounded, they have their jobs and their boyfriends and their lives are rooted in one place. Their choices in life are limited or already made. On the other hand 'The thumb and the satchel or the rented Rolls Royce' refers to 2 different types of people who maybe have too much choice in their lives. There is the rootless person who has no permanent home and drifts from place to place, with his or her satchel (or rucksack), sticking out a thumb to catch a ride. That person may have a sense of freedom to go wherever they want to go. Or they may be faced with continual confusion about what to do next. And then there is the person in the 'rented Rolls Royce.' To me this implies wealth and wealth opens up all kinds of choices in a different way. We have seen a lot of famous, wealthy people whose money would seem to give them a lot of freedom to choose whatever they want to do. Instead they become lost or confused. Maybe they can't handle all the choices that money makes available to them. In either case, too much choice can make a person crazy, whether it be the choices faced by the rootless drifter or those of the wealthy person who can't handle all the choices money makes available to them. That's my take on it anyway. (Joni took the photo according to the credits, so maybe she knows.) A guy commenting on the website says it's Merriweather Post Pavilion on August 24th: http://jonimitchell.com/music/album.cfm?id=8 I saw Joni at that venue but in 1979 with the better band. I saw her with Tom Scott's combo at Constitution hall in January. This is not Michigan bias. That is Pine Knob. In 1974 I had been to Ravinia many times (I grew up in Chicago) and never had yet heard of Pine Knob. That is not Ravinia nor anywhere else. That is Pine Knob. The album - if the liner notes are correct it was not recorded at Ravinia nor Pine Knob, only in California. The liner notes state it was recorded at Universal Ampitheatre except for Cactus Tree (LA Music Center) and Real Good for free (Berkeley Community Center). The liner notes do not state where that pic was taken. I hope someone can verify. But that was and is Pine Knob, suburban Detroit, and that is something that I just always have known from when MOA came out. That was part of the treat for the Detroit Joni concert crowd on May 31, 2000 was to see Joni at Pine Knob, site of th MOA cover. Trust me on this if nothing else - we have all seen movies filmed in Toronto that pretend to be NY or Chicago - that album cover is Pine Knob. Detroit was instrumental to her career as much as Detroit takes it on the chin, let Pine Knob have its just due. Here is a site where the picture is discussed: http://www.radioparadise.com/content.php?name=Music&file=songinfo&song_id=1839 We know Joni was in Pine Knob in 1974 http://jonimitchell.com/library/view.cfm?id=763 She has been there a few times http://www.mfyi.com/j/jonimitchelltourography.html Someone here has connections with Joni. Let her verify. But trust me: that is Pine Knob on the MOA cover. I have nothing personally invested, unlike some Amazon reviewers who want their nostalgia made new. I didn't see her in 1974 anywhere. My 1974 allegiance was to Ravinia where I went a lot. I have only been at Pine Knob once: May 31, 2000 to see Joni Mitchell. But the MOA cover is a pic of Pine Knob taken by Joni in 1974. If that is not Pine Knob on the MOA cover may I be forced to have hot naked sex with George Bush and Dick Cheney. Do you need more proof than that? Vince On Sun, Jul 19, 2009 at 1:58 PM, Snatch N. Look at the trees, the similar positions of the wall, posts, etc. I believe there used to be a wall running along the right side of the pavilion which has now been removed. The ceiling baffles used to look like the ones on the cover but these have been changed. The seats may have been changed also. I looked at the Pine Knob photos and remain unconvinced. Show me a picture from Pine Knob that looks as much as the cover as this shot of Ravinia does and let's talk then. ------------------------------ End of JMDL Digest V2009 #217 ***************************** ------- Post messages to the list by clicking here: mailto:joni@smoe.org Unsubscribe by clicking here: mailto:joni-digest-request@smoe.org?body=unsubscribe -------
