In this morning's digest I read Michael from (Laurentide) Mountains' reply to Em's exuberant: "And a BUD CORT sighting!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" That reminded me of something I read last week on Yusuf Islam's FB profile page. I'll be a copy cat here. ; ) Voila: Cameron Crowe Writes About Yusuf Following Yusuf's appearance at the recent tribute night to 'Harold And Maude' director Hal Ashby, the host of the evening, Cameron Crowe, has written some words about Yusuf and the evening's events. He writes: "When the lights dimmed shortly after 7:30, there was a palpable buzz in the crowd. Many had heard that Yusuf would be here as part of the Academy of Arts and Sciences' Tribute to Hal Ashby. Suddenly, in the darkness, there was the sound of Hal Ashby talking about his collaboration with Cat Stevens on his great film "Harold and Maude." After about thirty seconds of Hal speaking glowingly of Cat, came the voice of an Announcer: "That was Hal talking about Cat... who became Yusuf." A lone spotlight lit up the stage microphone, and Yusuf appeared from behind the curtain. He was given a standing ovation from the thrilled crowd. Yusuf then opened with "Don't Be Shy," followed by "Miles From Nowhere." After a few words explaining that he hadn't played the next song in many years, Yusuf began playing "Trouble." There was an audible gasp from the crowd. Tears were heard all around me. The song, such an indelible part of one of the greatest collaborations between artist and film, is lodged in the heart of Yusuf and "Harold and Maude" fans everywhere. His version on this night was spare, emotional and soul-stirring in his power. Another standing ovation, and the evening had begun on this magical note. After some remarks from Academy President Sid Ganis, co-host and Variety publisher Peter Bart, and yours truly, the world's most nervous (but proud) speaker... a panel of friends and admirers were then introduced. All had been enthusiastic participants from the first invitation to be a part of the evening... Judd Apatow, Diablo Cody, Seth Rogen, Jon Voight, Haskell Wexler and Yusuf himself. For the next thirty-five minutes, Yusuf exchanged anecdotes with the panel and shared his deep appreciation for the work of Hal Ashby and the film we'd all come to see, "Harold and Maude." The film screened to a wildly enthusiastic reception. For many, it was the first time seeing the film on a big screen. The effect was beyond powerful, and the fact that we were sharing it with Yusuf made the experience even more memorable. Afterwards, there was a surprise appearance by the film's reclusive star, Bud Cort, who thanked the crowd and gave a fifteen minute monologue about his journey in getting the part, and living with the film's lasting impact. He also hailed Yusuf as the film's "fourth main character" after Harold, Maude (Ruth Gordon) and Harold's comicly domineering mother (Vivian Pickles). Afterwards Cort and Yusuf posed for a photo that says everything - memories were shared, friendships renewed, and with Yusuf's graceful and generous appearance, all left having witnessed and felt the rarest of events. "Harold and Maude" had come to life again, on the wings of passion and true art... and the songs of Yusuf. Thank you to Yusuf, David Spero, Barry Krost, Brian Loucks and to Yoriyos for your contributions to making it a night of nights." There are five pictures from the night on his FB profile. (Em, I'll share them with you later. Hold on. I'm telling you to hold on...LOL!) The fifth is of Bud Cort, smiling Maude-ly. The seasons really do go round and round. Put on the day! This song is also one of my favorites but remains fairly opaque to me, not least because I don't read the bible. Mark has opened up an interpretative angle I had not considered before (the stage direction/ lighting idea, perhaps reminiscent of "a camera pans the cocktail arc behind a blind of potted palms"). Thanks for that Mark. I still find it fascinating that Joni wrote the music for Passion Play first, and performed it wordlessly three years before writing the lyrics. Having tried that myself, I always find my lyrics becoming a bit stock, sandwiching them into the preordained metric structure. Not so with JM. A penitent woman, a woman who had sinned, but was saved by Jesus with the phrase "may the first of you who have not sinned throw the first stone." No doubt, the guilt Joni felt for her unwed pregnancy and giving up her daughter lead to "Magdalene" becoming such a major character in her writing. Jerry I've thought alot about "Passion Play" and am ready to go out on a limb and speculate wildly. Try a Google image search for "The Penitent Magdalene." You will see that this is an often used title for figuratives by many masters. The images are often similar in depiction of a solitary young woman. The one that caught my eye particularly, was in New York at the Metropolitan Museum of Art by Georges de la Tour. In that particular version, it is perhaps most clear that Mary's belly is swollen with child, as often seen. In many, the young woman appears with a skull. She does so in Georges de la Tour's versions (there are at least two). BTW, de la Tour's version also makes a surprisingly dark cameo appearance in the animated film "The Little Mermaid." That may have been discussed here already. Now for the sad part. There has been some discussion (here I don't know if that has been confirmed) that Joni and Larry had conceived during the period in which the songs for NRH were developed. If it is true that Joni and Larry lost their child, my heart aches that much more upon listening to this track. She has said, "I sing my sorrow and paint my joy." I don't suppose would ever see a painting depicting that kind of loss from Joni, but we might hear a song. Yeah! for those interested, go to google news and search under Jesse James Hollywood (the point of the sermon illustration was lots people having lots of time to say and do the right thing and no one acting... for those who go to church and if they follow the lectionary, the allusion was to the John the Baptist-Herod-Salome story) I am not sure when he gets sentenced. I am against the death penalty and if I read the papers correctly under California law it is death or life in prison and the latter is my preference. Maybe someone from California could clarify what the legal sentencing options are. My understanding is that murder during a kidnapping is punishable by death in Calif-but kind of a moot point as actual executions are extremely rare. We're still feeding Charlie Manson, Sirhan Sirhan, Polly Klass' killer, Juan Corona, etc.... Wikipedia: Since 1976, 13 people have been executed by the state. As of 21 October 2007 there are 667 people on "Death Row".
