After I listened to the radio interview that Robin & Dave did a while back, I meant to post something about it. I second everything Kenny says about the performances that these two create. The arrangements and playing are beautifully executed tributes to Joni's music that show Dave's respect and understanding of it. And Robin's lovely vocals have just the right amount of reverence coupled with enough of her own unique interpretation to make them very special tributes to the originals. As a rule, I'm not much of a fan of covers of Joni's music. I usually am disappointed with them. Joni's music is so original and linked with Joni herself in my mind that I rarely see anything in other performers' interpretations that add anything to the songs. Most of them just don't grab me. Dave & Robin are one exceptional exception to the rule. I would love to hear more of their wonderful interpretations of Joni's music. I too wish I could attend the fest in California this year. Fiddle and drum is indeed scheduled for 2/25/10. The amazing thing - tickets are only $28, less than half of the UCLA price, and the theater is much smaller and more intimate, with generally better sight lines, than Royce Hall. The big question - would Joni make the 45-mile limo trip to Irvine? I can understand that folks might prefer to go to UCLA in case of a Joni sighting (that's only a ONE mile limo trip for her!) And there is no royal box in Irvine. :) *************************************************** Steve Dulson Costa Mesa CA tinkersown@ca.rr.com "The Living Tradition Concert Series" www.thelivingtradition.org "Folk Alliance Region - West" www.far-west.org ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 11 Jul 2009 09:36:18 -0700 From: "Mark Scott" Subject: Re: The Magdalene Laundries Thanks for this, Laura. I love this song and think it is one of Joni's masterpieces, somewhat overlooked. It has a beautiful, haunting melody that is perfectly wedded to some wonderful lyrics. It's one of those songs that tells a personal story but manages to pack a wallop of a message as well. I can't understand how anyone can listen to this song and say Joni has never produced anything that matches the quality of her 70s work. Unfortunately, they know nothing about NYC and how the American rental market and system works. If anyone can help me find them a 3-4 bed house (they are looking for something with a garden - realistic?) Or close to parks. Greenpoint has been mentioned but from the internet it looks like there's no parks. Needing help! Manhattanites sneer, but they don't know what they're missing. Staten Island is by far the lowest-priced borough, and it's beautiful. There are neighborhoods near beaches, and inland neighborhoods near parks. It's a free 20-minute ferry ride to lower Manhattan (unfortunately, since 9/11, I think cars are no longer allowed); there are buses and a train to commute from all neighborhoods to the ferry. If you have a car, the Verrazano Bridge gets you into Manhattan in about 25 minutes (if I remember correctly---that time may be more at rush hour). It *is* easier to get around SI with a car---the "big box" stores and large supermarkets are pretty much in the inland neighborhoods. But there are a lot of great little delis and smaller neighborhood stores and the like as well. There are tons of parks and lakes. Silver Lake, for one, is just up the hill from St. George. Check out craigslist. Unfortunately, there are a lot of broker ads there now, but be sure to check the owner listings. If you want to stay closer to the ferry, go for St. George, Stapleton, New Brighton, Snug Harbor, Richmond. St. George is the oldest part of the island, so it's a historic district, and there are a lot of Victorian houses, and also older-construction apt. buildings. It's also the closest thing SI has to an artist's nabe, tho there are plenty of older families there as well. If you're looking for a newer condo, Rosebank, to the south of the ferry, is overrun with them. You can also check out www.silive.com , which is the local newspaper. I haven't checked recently, but a lot of owners (as opposed to brokers) used to advertise there. Good luck, and if your friend would like more info, you're welcome to give them my email and they can get in touch directly. :-) Terra On Sat, Jul 11, 2009 at 4:48 PM, Zooby wrote: > Hello all people from New York, I have a favour to ask: > > A good friend of mine is moving to New York following her actor husband > while he films there for 6 months and she's looking for a place to rent for > them and their 2 lovely children. > > Unfortunately, they know nothing about NYC and how the American rental > market and system works.
