Calling someone a dog is, though. Wow. In my country, naming a dog after someone is a very serious insult. I have lots of rescue animals here. A few weeks ago my dad walked in and said he felt like he was at the shelter when the dogs and cats surrounded him shortly after he walked in the door. They are very personable.. They have people names, which I gave them naturally. Well one is Ginger after the spice, but there was a woman named Ginger on Gilligan's Island, and I thought of her hair when I named Ginger. I think it is interesting how dogs are referred to as man's best friend here and satan's best friend in Iraq (according to my brother-in-law who was stationed in Iraq). The way people treat and think of animals can be revealing. The concept of eating animals is totally strange to me. Medical care for animals seems humane. Animal shelters are run by the Humane Society here. Is it more human to love and take good care of animals than not? Or is it more human to treat them as lower species, expendable beings for our use? I know of a Franciscan monastery that loves them so they can butcher them... oxymoron? The biggest difference between my puppy and a baby is the puppy has chewed up the stuffed animal he sleeps with... but that's not because he's mean. It's because he has better teeth than babies do. Unfortunately, the Canadian government slashed some essential travel grants for arts non-profits.. we're lucky to be able to tour this much in spite of it. :-/ Lots of other ballet companies are cancelling their tours due to the recession. (eg., the National Ballet of Canada cancelled their tour, which affects us too because we were supposed to be able to host their Sleeping Beauty as part of our season!). It's probably thanks to Joni that we've had enough success in the past while to be able to keep our heads above water! So, Bob, you want feedback on the Joni Covers Volume 114? Well, I never thought anyone could produce a cover of Down To You that I could compare to Joni's, but Robin Adler's vocals, Barnaby Finch's piano expertise, and Dave Blackburn's production make this a masterful tribute to Joni's original. Every time I hear that song I'm reminded of just why Joni received a grammy for the arrangement in 1974. I've heard Robin & Dave's work before (from the Jonifest recordings) but I wish Adler, Finch & Blackburn were closer to me so I could catch them live sometime. I'll listen to the rest of the cover tunes tomorrow; thanks for all your work, Bob.
