Just sending this off quickly to keep a connection and ask for your prayers and healing energy. I know I haven't written lately but I feel you're all an important part of my life. So happy to have the Jonifest in Calif to look forward to. Pearl From Facebook: July 6 _Pearl Weisberg_ (http://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=1627216242&ref=nf) At my house in W. Virginia right now. We were scheduled to stay for 17 days. Yesterday was my birthday. Had a lovely lunch, did some antique shopping after. Got a call at 3 PM..my Mom was found on the floor in her condo and rushed to the hospital. After many tests, doctor said she had an embolic stroke. I'll be back home in FL Wed. I'm very sad. She is being well cared for. Please send prayers to Yetta. Thanks. Pearl Mom seemed stable on Monday and was somewhat communicative. I spoke to her today at about 3:30 pm and she knew who I was and said she loved me. I asked if she wanted her sister to call her and she even said "Why not?" My brother came down from NY today. I thought we would be discussing what rehab center she would need to go to. Flights from Lewisburg have been limited on Delta to Wed, Fri and Sun so we didn't come home yet. I could have rented a car and flown from Roanoke about 90 miles from here but she sounded stable. I got a call at 6:30 pm saying she has taken a turn for the worse and the decisions I need to make involved taking measures to keep her alive. She had small strokes in the brain and her heart stopped briefly. She was coughing up blood clots. I feel guilty and helpless. I want her to wait for us to come but I want her to be comfortable. Just got off the phone with my daughter who is with my mother. She said she was sleeping and that no news was good news. I told her to tell Mom to wait for us. David (my son) is coming tomorrow too.. Please send prayers and healing energy. I'm writing this quickly so I may be rambling. Love, Pearl My daughter Marcy called later that evening to say Mom had awakened and was recognizing everyone. She kept saying I love you to each person and that they were beautiful, even to the nurse. My brother said that's all she was saying. I heard her voice over the phone, and kept telling her I would be there tomorrow to hug and kiss her. I'm glad she got to spend a lot of time with my 2 year old granddaughter Lilly, who is the light of her life. Please wait for me Mom. Tearfully. Pearl **************Summer concert season is here! I like it so far. If Ray Davies had re-recorded Paul McCartney's "McCartney", it would be this album. To my ears, this is a good thing. Thanks ya'll. Jim L. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Jul 2009 08:27:15 -0700 (PDT) From: Catherine McKay Subject: Re: Joni The Dog surely NJC by now I know some people who wouldn't be flattered by having a critter named after them, but a lot of us North Americans, and northern Europeans as well, or anyone who comes from that background (Australia or New Zealand for example) are very fond of our pets. I understand the dog is not looked upon with any kind of respect in some parts of the world and that to be called a dog is probably a huge insult, especially in Asia, I guess. For some people here, their pets are like their children. A lot of people who don't have kids, spoil their pets. I have seen ridiculous pet beds that look like human ones on a small scale - this includes a brass bed I saw recently in an upscale pet shop. As well, there are doggy daycares and I've even seen a summer camp for dogs advertised. I suppose it's really just a kennel repositioned, but they provide "activities" for the dogs. Insane, but true. I could never afford that and the weird thing is that a lot of people who CAN afford it are out a lot anyway and probably shouldn't even have pets, especially dogs who are more social than cats. These are the same people who drive Hummers and like to show everyone how rich they are and I'm convinced they get pets as a status symbol - they always have purebred ones and either the trendiest or the most unusual breeds that will be noticed. I had one of my cats to the vet the other day and she needed blood work and a few other things. It cost me $200 and I thought I'd die when I saw the bill. I was expected it to be half that, or less. As well, I've had quotes on getting dental work done on the cats, and it would cost upwards of $600-$1000 - per cat! That's because the cats are older, would need to be under anaesthetic and also on a heart monitor because of their age and the anaesthetic and they would clean their teeth and gums and extract any bad teeth - each extraction would cost extra. I felt very bad about this, but I can't afford that! I can tell you that I will probably not get pets again once my cats die, because I can't afford it. you can get pet insurance but it doesn't cover everything and my cats are too old now to be covered at all. If they get sick, I will just have to let them go, but two of them are 15-16 years old, and they've lived longer than most. The other is ten. They're all healthy enough except for this one that's on thyroid meds - and except for their teeth and gums. Calling someone a dog is, though. Wow. In my country, naming a dog after someone is a very serious insult. There was an article in the newspaper just recently. http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/31504027/ns/today_pets/ Long gone are names like Fido or Lassie. My dogs are part of my family. Although they are not treated as humans, they are very much a part of our life. My yorkies are named Saffy (which isn't really a common human name. we named her after the daughter on ABFAB), Jesse, and Georgia. Somehow Snowball or Fluffy just doesn't cut it. My cats also have at least three nicknames on top of their "formal" names. There's something about people in my family where we feel compelled to give our cats a bunch of different names. Mine are Emily (aka Smudge, Smoogadeen, Emma-Bemma, Smoodles, etc); Charlotte (aka Mang, Mangatooga, Chuggles, etc); and Salem (aka Sales, Sageets, Sage, Sagitor and so on.) If you say slyly to someone, You dog, you!" then it's kind of flattering - like calling someone a devil, but admiring them at the same time. Or else, if you're Randy Jackson on "American Idol," calling someone "dog" or maybe it's "dawg" seems to be a good thing. - --- On Tue, 7/7/09, Randy Remote wrote: > From: Randy Remote > Subject: Re: Joni The Dog > To: "Rian Afriadi" , "jonipeople" > Received: Tuesday, July 7, 2009, 10:06 PM > Not so much here.
