I had been hoping for something more like the Neil Young archives. Aren't there very early live sets that we have been asked not to share as they might see an official release? Isn't it the case that Joni has not left too many extra tracks/out takes lying around? Alternate versions? Are we talking the hissing demos here? I'll pay for those although i already have the bootleg. I would love to hear the whole of Dreamland from the end of PWWAM. I will be interested to see the track listing. I'm not particularly interested in what other people say about Joni's music so the liner notes idea has little appeal for me, but will be happy to see any JMDL names i recognise in the liner notes. A set like the Geffen box with a new track or two on each disc adding up to less than album for lots of money? I would personally, with regrets, have to pass. And yes, part of me always resents that a bit. (I did buy the Geffen box, but as I had only one of the 4 albums on CD at the time, and my Joni vinyl is well-played, it felt worth it.) Still, a tragedy and of course I had a crush on her as did all my friends even though Kate Jackson was my favorite Angel. But the MJ thing, that was tough for me to get my head around...when I was leaving the office a co-worker told me he was being rushed to the hospital with cardiac arrest. That was hard enough to believe. My son & I went to a local restaurant to grab a bite to eat and when we walked in people were talking about his passing. I couldn't believe it. My Michael Jackson memories include: - - watching the Jackson 5 on Ed Sullivan, young Michael's singing and dancing was just electrifying even then. - - "I'll Be There", "ABC", and especially "I Want You Back" - all those Motown classics. - - My little sister had a crush on MJ as well as Jimmy Osmond and listed them as her (2) top boyfriends. - - I guess spending all that time in that air-tight bacteria-proof tank didn't do a lot of good. - - I never got tired of hearing "Rock With You" when it came out. - - "Thriller" is the best-selling album of all time for a good reason. I remember picking it up about the same time I got WTRF, Thriller was the album I would get pumped up to, and WTRF was what I would mellow out with. - - I remember when a NEW MICHAEL JACKSON video would be coming out on MTV and it was a major event, we were huddled around the TV like it was The Beatles on Ed Sullivan or Neil Armstrong stepping on the moon. MTV owes their existence to him, along with every pop singer who incorporates his energy and dancing into their performance. He made it look easy, and it wasn't. Michael's life, like so many childhood stars, is ultimately a tragic one. Deprived of a normal childhood, he suffered from arrested development and wanted to live his child life after he became an adult, not something that many could be sympathetic with, but his legacy left behind in the grooves of the music he made will long outlast any negativities of his personal life. My priorities are clarity and separation. I tend to be attracted to old things, but maybe I could use a reality check. Talking about bookshelf sized stereo speakers. Like if I take $400 and buy a highly rated bookshelf speaker for that price range, from NOW, would it blow away a (then) highly rated vintage speaker in great shape? I saw her reality show "Chasing Farrah" and really came to like her. In that, she gets together with another sculptor and does a huge beautiful piece (now I can't remember what it was) but she was a very talented artist. What a lovely girl. Maybe seemed dumb blonde to some but if you listen to her, I don't really think so at all. A very caring human being. I hope her son (with Ryan O'Neal) Redmond can straighten himself out in honor of his mom. Also sad about Michael Jackson. I heard one phone interview with one of his attorneys who said something along the lines of he had a large group of enablers around him and if you think the Anna Nicole Smith situation was bad, you ain't heard nothin' yet. Inside each cabinet there was a 12", 10", a 6" speaker and a 4" fan shaped thingie, they were HUGE like 12" wide 12" deep X 30" high. The sound was pretty good considering their age but they'd been moved so often the cabinets were what finally broke down, not the speakers. Now I have 2 sets of different speakers - one set of Bose and one set of Toshiba they are smaller in size but deliver quite a big sound. I've never looked inside of them to see what's there so I don't know how technology has changed but I definitely hear a difference between the two types; the Bose being better than the Toshiba but then both sets are a few years old now. I know! I feel the same way, and was saddened, like you and Ken and Catherine (and probably others today) have expressed, by this inevitable but sad news, too. She was trumped by Michael Jackson's stunning (as in WTF???!!!) death. A total eclipse of the heart of Farrah. (Not total, but you know what I mean.) Where's your OWN shining hour? Not even when you DIE? I watched "Farrah's Story" when it aired and was very moved by her courage and grace and willingness to share such a a horrendous ordeal. She wasn't just another dumb blond in the bleachers who whips her hair (gorgeous hair!) for you. She was an art student, too. Deep, not superficial, between the forceps and the stone. Now the angel has her final assignment. Rest in peace. Last night while channel surfing madly (until it all turned to so much confetti on my TV set), I caught one interview (the one w/ Bahbba Wa Wa, I think). Farrah said she didn't want to get married again because she didn't "want anyone telling me what to do." That sounded pretty Joni to me. And in a little personal "love is a story told", I remembered a Farrah moment w/ my Mom and Dad. They (my Dad in particular) did not like the fact that I was not going to change my name when I got married. They didn't understand this new "feminism stuff" stuff at all. My Dad was worried that future children might be considered illegitimate or some silly thing like that. So they aimed the Farrah hoses on me. "Why don't you hyphenate your name, like Farrah Fawcett-Majors?" LOL! Eventually I did hyphenate it, and then 20 years later separated the wheat from the chaff (if you knew the other half of my name at the time you would get the joke, but for googling paranoia I won't share it here) and went back to my own name. I'm not ready -- or willing -- to change my name again. ; ) Rob, I'm so very sorry about your mother. I well know the sorrow, as do many others here. Ashara hugs and love and light in absentia.
