Being from Canada, we always take pride in how beautiful and "natural" our environment is. So, I will admit, I wasn't expecting all of the awesome sights we saw - Yellowstone, which I was ready to pass over, turned out to be a huge draw for everybody, so much so that we detoured our trip home to go back (and, I might add, is where we ran into Georgette from the Mary Tyler Moore Show and acted like complete idiots). Utah, which I cynically rolled my eyes about and expected Osmonds living in tents by the side of the road (although Marie was on billboards everywhere) had to be one of the most striking places I saw. SLC was beautiful, the Great Salt Lake was a cool diversion, and Bryce Canyon has to be th e best kept secret of the state (the Grand Canyon was almost a let-down after that). Also, I was able, unlike I thought, to get a good, strong cup of coffee! Anyway, Utah was amazing (although at one point, we counted five LDS churches all within sight of each other, and that sort of freaked me out - not trying to offend the Mormons on the list, but in Orem we passed the "Missionary Mall", with a big blow-up doll of a Mormon Missionary standing on the roof), and I can't wait to go back. I fell in love with the desert in Arizona and California, and again, planning my route for the next trip to include other parts of the desert. The LA area was, of course, beautiful once you got past the traffic and smog, but that was no surprise. Anyway, I was amazed at all of the natural beauty we saw, and my smug "Canada is where you will see REAL nature and beauty" attitude disappeared pretty quickly. As well, people were so friendly everywhere we went (al though there were a few places in the California desert that made me understand why a person may need to carry a gun). Maybe it's just travelling with 4 kids and people were thinking we were on some new TLC show after the demise of Jon and Kate, but people were stopping us everywhere, be it a restaurant, mall, Target, whatever - to tell us what a nice family we had. Sometimes they'd say it in Spanish, but I am assuming that's what they were saying. So, in a nutshell, I am trying to say that we saw some truly awesome sights and encountered some wonderfully open and friendly people, and I feel ashamed at my preconceived notions that there wasn't much to see between the coasts. Oh, and since I am crazy, I picked up this southern accent the second I entered Montana, and was talking in this drawl and "all y'all" popped out of my mouth every two seconds, although unfortunately I still can't aquire a taste for Mountain Dew, so I ain't fixin' to become the nex t Tom Petty anytime soon. And one last thing - I know I've said here before about how odd and weird I always thought it was that so many people have flags in their yards. Well, I've been rethinking this, and you know, it's sort of nice - maybe I think this now, in a post-Bush world, where being patriotic doesn't equate with the far right, but you know, it was nice to see people taking pride in their country. The only place I see a Canadian flag where I live is in a school yard or in the window of run-down apartments down on the other side of the tracks. I think we could learn something from all y'all. So yeah, mea culpa for all my preconceived notions. And far less litter everywhere we went compared to here - did those crying Indian commercials from the 70's really work? America the beautiful isn't just a song, this country really is diverse in it's beauty from amber waves of grain and purple mountains majesty to fruited plains and sea to shining sea it's one of the most beautiful countries in the world. I love it. <<< in Orem we passed the "Missionary Mall", with a big blow-up doll of a Mormon Missionary standing on the roof), >>> I was in a little shop here in Seattle a couple of days ago. My friend had been telling me about Archie McPhee's for ages and I finally went to check it out. An interesting store, no doubt but I saw a couple of things I was tempted to buy for my in-laws one is a Jesus action figure, replete with 5 loaves and 2 fishes and a big stone urn for changing water into wine. The other was great, a "last supper" lunch box with a copy of the famous painting on the side. If I didn't think my in-laws would have taken offense at the irreverence I would definitely buy them both. <<< And far less litter everywhere we went compared to here - did those crying Indian commercials from the 70's really work? >>> That and bottle deposits along with an awareness of recycling. I live in Seattle where styrofoam take-out containers are now illegal, all take-out has to be in 100% recyclable containers. My trash can will hold just about two full kitchen size trash bags, wheareas my recycle container would hold about 10 bags if we were allowed to put recyclables in bags which we're not. More and more communities are recycling and I think it's awesome. I also have a yard waste container for grass clippings, weeds, cut branches etc. in which we can now put items for composting. I also belong to a group called Freecycle, it's an online community who live in the same county and who recycle items among each other that would normally be found in landfills. Offering up, and posting wanted notices, for items which can't easily be thrown away such as mattresses, bed frames, old but working appliances like TVs (now that people have gone High Definition working 32" TVs are available regularly). The only rules are that the item has to be free and there are certain items which cannot be offered e.g. prescription drugs. I have recycled clothes, shoes, computer monitors, vases, curtains and bedding, dishes, pots and pans along with a multitude of things I can't use any more but which someone else really wanted. This is a national group and there are yahoo groups set up for most areas in the country. See: http://www.freecycle.org/group/US/?noautodetect=1 if you are interested in this program. I'm sure, in the stores I've seen them in here, they ARE meant to be ironic. I have also seen the coolest handpuppets and finger puppets of famous people, including Jesus, Gandhi, famous writers and philosophers throughout the ages at a store called Blue Banana in Kensington Market not too far from where I live. I wanted to buy all of them and put on a really weird puppet show, but I was broke. Ah well, I know where they are. Thanks for the reminder about freecycle too. I had heard about it before, but it slipped my mind. They exist in many countries around the world and there are local versions in many towns and neighbourhoods. I have some stuff I want to get rid of but don't want to throw out because it's not garbage, but I don't need it anymore and don't have the room. http://www.freecycle.org/group/?noautodetect=1 for the list of countries and then you go drill down to something more local. - --- On Thu, 6/25/09, Cassy wrote: I was in a little shop here in Seattle a couple of days ago. The other was great, a "last supper" lunch box with a copy of the famous painting on the side. B I've been playing piano at the Atlanta airport international concourse and I'm looking to do more Joni songs. B I pretty much have free reign to play whatever so I kind of mix it up between jazz standards, pop music, and whatever I feel like playing. B So far I've done songs like "For Free", "River", "Court and Spark", "Case of You"...I think that's all I've tried so far. B I've even played songs like Pink Floyd "Hey You" and "Comfortably Numb" in a kind of free jazz style. It's a cool gig and people genuinely appreciate real music instead of the lame autopilot that the piano is on when no one is playing it. B Oh, I also play lots of Tom Waits...On the Nickel, Innocent When You Dream, San Diego Serenade, Invitation to the Blues, Ol '55, etc... best, Victor in hotlanta (back from the cool breezes at Sarasota's siesta key!) - ------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Jun 2009 21:58:52 +0000 From: robbi@tweedtheater.org Subject: NJC - Michael Jackson Just heard that Michael Jackson died as well. - ------Original Message------ From: kjhsf@aol.com Sender: owner-joni@smoe.org To: anima_rising@yahoo.ca To: joni@smoe.org ReplyTo: kjhsf@aol.com Subject: Re: Farrah Fawcett, njc Sent: Jun 25, 2009 5:19 PM Yes, I just got home from work and heard it on the news and sort of let out an unvoluntary?gasp.?
