On Sunday - Father's Day - my son popped out of bed early and said that he wanted to go to the gym and work out with me. He works long hours and typically likes to sleep in on Sundays so I was a little surprised. Anyway, we had a great workout and enjoyed a sauna and whirlpool afterwards with lots of conversation. He needed to pick up some new clothes so we stopped at Belk's on the way home and he got some stuff and then I fixed some lunch for us. He said that he thought it would be a good Father's Day gift to give me some company, and it immediately reminded me of Joni's BRILLIANT song Jericho and the line "the GIFT of your extra time". I truly felt that lyric that day. When uptown cabaret canaries stray from the Great American Songbook, they often turn to the loon from Saskatoon: She's a little folk, a little soft-rock, a little jazz -- classy! Even better, she's wordy and a tad weird. But while other singers do the songs, John Kelly does the whole package. Sprung out of the 1980s East Village alt-scene, Kelly has been paying tribute to Mitchell, off and on, for 25 years now. Typically, he first tried out his characterization at a now-defunct drag-a-thon -- which gets a sly tip of the hat when Kelly sings "By the time we got to Wigstock" in "Woodstock." Yet while Kelly wears a blond wig and a pair of Mitchellesque floor-length dresses, this reprise of his 1996 show "Paved Paradise" isn't a camp trip but rather a subtle, performance-art take on Joni Mitchell as icon. In a hall-of-mirrors way, Kelly, who accompanies himself on guitar and dulcimer, is backed by two of the singer's own idols, Vincent van Gogh (Paul Ossola) on bass and Georgia O'Keeffe (Zecca Esquibel) on keyboards. The set list hops through Mitchell's career in rough chronological order, reaching wide from "The Fishbowl," a poem the songwriter wrote in 10th grade, up to the title track from Mitchell's 2007 album, "Shine." Kelly emulates his model's vocal swoops in their original key, but he doesn't try to disguise his decidedly masculine lower register. This ambiguity permeates the entire show and is driven even further by a stunning costume change during "Down to You." It ranks as one of the most honest, tender and inherently theatrical moments of the year. This distance is both enhanced and undermined by Kelly's stylized emulation of Mitchell's expressions -- part coquettish, part bashful. Even when tuning a recalcitrant guitar, he remained in character and yet somehow *other*. "Paved Paradise" is a little magical John-Joni island, outside of the here and now. Sure, there are times when Kelly feels a little tentative. But his emotional connection to the material never falters. It's something that Mitchell -- who once said she'd "sacrifice the perfect time and the perfect pitch to color the words" -- would certainly embrace. *elisabeth.vincentelli @nypost.com* *PAVED PARADISE REDUX: THE ART OF JONI MITCHELL * *Abrons Arts Center, 466 Grand St.; 212-598-0400. Of all the places in Ohio I would NOT want to visit (again), for many reasons Lima is at the top of that list. The citizens there don't even pronounce Lima correctly ... it ought to be "LEE-ma" (like Peru), but instead they call it "LIE-ma" (like ... what? Lime with an "a" at the end? Lima beans, which also should be "LEE-ma" beans?). Of course they don't pronounce Medina properly, either ... and there's a whole list of other names about which they're clueless too. Lori Santa Rosa, CA - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 22 Jun 2009 20:02:28 -0400 From: Vince Subject: Re: totally NJC - Ohio Cassie, next time you are in Spencerville, I live right near the school! And I already know Conant road! And I know where Elida is (not that I have tried getting there on my own yet... but I can get from Spencerville to Lima and back without a map now! I am very blessed that Lima has a Meijers - old timers here remember that I lived a while (many years) in Greenville Michigan which is home to store #1 of the Meijers chain - Fred Meijer spoke out in favor of the nuclear freeze back in the day - I love shopping at Meijers so it feels like home a bit. Meijers also carries all my soy based food so I am ecstatic I can stay on my rather rigid diet. I am in the upscale area of Spencerville. It is a town of 2,400 but still has its different neighborhoods. I am in the wealthy suburban section. Wow... the pressure is on me to maintain the area life style! I suppose I cannot play my Eminem too loudly... Paz, we keep having these near-miss things, back to you being from Detroit where I lived for a while. Interesting! Monika, I understand that Cleveland has its ups and downs. I was kind of hoping that if I was to be in Ohio, it might be there. But that was not to be. By the way, I thought that the JMDL archives were not find-able by google or any search engines -- yet when I google my name a few archives come up. I thought our decision was to keep them all outside of the reach of google because especially in the early years (and maybe up to 2005) we all assumed that we were not searchable and people (including myself) shared some quite intimate stuff in the jmdl that was for this community of friends, not for the world. We all know better now... but... is it still the case that the jmdl is not searchable by google, etc? I sure hope so. Getting this pastor gig had some interesting moments because of some stuff on the internet. Lot of explaining on things that were out there. Oh well. I still feel this is such a unique community. The jmdl is very special. I am glad to have journeyed through the last decade plus with you all, and those we have lost, and those who dropped away through the years.
