Man! I just loved that. The guitar playing just blew me away. Man, it's good. Is the music available somewhere? So wish I could be at the show. He was of course the US record producer who spent a lot of time in the UK and produced people like Nick Drake. The book was recommended by a friend, but I don't know if it was discussed here. If anyone still has any mails about it, I would love to see them. I don't want to say too much about the book yet, but I am already totally hooked. It is beautifully written, full of great information, from a very personal angle. I am sure this mail does not need a "NJC" tag in the header, because I am sure I will come across a lot of Joni content before too long. And by a wonderful coincidence, I just walked into a bookshop last week and saw the face of Nick Drake on the latest Mojo magazine, and I bought it on impulse. Then I found that the free enclosed CD was a celebration of 50 years of Island Records, where of course Joe Boyd worked, and the inside cover is full of quotes from his book. I love this sort of resendipidy, and now I have the perfect accompaniment to my book! You can find it here (as a double CD with the self-titled debut and some bonus tracks): http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0009Y276M/ref=nosim/cagnlace00/ moni k. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 30 May 2009 06:09:11 -0700 (PDT) From: Bob Muller Subject: Re: book White Bicycles by Joe Boyd If I'm not mistaken, Joe Boyd promoted Joni early on with tapes of her songs, and that's how Fairport Convention first heard Both Sides Now/Eastern Rain/Chelsea Morning, and The Foggy Dew-O heard "Born To Take The Highway, Ian Campbell heard Circle Game, Dr. Junk and we got recordings of all of those. I'll bet that's a great book, Lieve - might have to check it out myself. Live radio is a bit frantic, with the engineer scuffling on the floor trying to track down bad connections one minute before airtime and a headphone mix that sounded like you were singing into an empty swimming pool but I guess the music still came across and the interviewer does know his stuff about Joni and music in general (being the San Diego Union Tribune Pop critic).
