I loved the clarity of it but, as I listened, I found Robert's vocals to be a bit strained as if he was forcing the words from his throat instead of using his lungs. It's almost like he has no confidence in his singing abilities. On the other hand, I absolutely drifted off in the music. The orchestration and instrumentation is unique yet doesn't deviate from the general rhythm of the song. The bass is beautiful. That's my two shekels worth. We can't all think it's wonderful. My life has been full of so many new things that there just was no space for the daily update on all things Joni, and on you people and music. I have to say, reading the old digests I miss those mornings when I was sitting in my lonesome room in Cambridge, getting ready for work and just listening to some YouTube link posted by one of you. Am back to report on my recent spot of Jonitourism, another little jewel in my existence as a JMDL. What a great couple of days in the UK! I flew to London and went straight to Cambridge, had a bath and hung out with my friend there. Got picked up by Chris and we drove off to Wootton outside Bedford, where Steph and Anita live in their 17th-century house, a beatiful old structure wth enormous timber beams and a garden landscaped with flowerbeds, little spaces with benches, buddha and other creatures appearing between the flowers. I have to add that leaving the car we had stepped right into the English summer: birds chirping, blossoming trees and flowers and green fields everywhere, pretty wonderful for someone who lives on the third floor in Copenhagen, where summer is generally a month behind. Went for a curry with Chris in the neighbouring and very odd combined Indian/local pub. Back to the house that was slowly filling up with people. I haven4t mentioned the cabin at the back of the garden where our Jeff Hankin and Amy Wadge (both from Wales) were to perform. We must have been aobut 30 people in the audience, some of us sitting on the floor at leg4s distance of the performers. This created a really nice and intimate atmosphere which agreed well with Jeff4s unpretentious style and made Amy Wadge4s intense rock-star mannerisms come across very strongly. Those of you who have seen Jeff perform know that he delivers his songs in a very plain and direct way that goes straight to the heart without being invasive. Amy is a fairly petite but strong character, she appeared in full stage make-up and a blonde rock-star hairdo designed to be tossed around, most of the time covering half her face; I think maybe to create a room of her own and some distance from which to perform her very intense songs. She is one of those talents that seems to have a little (I say little because she really is quite little) steam engine inside her, and she delivered som very well crafted and powerful songs, played several instruments and took time to introduce the songs with great wit. She writes for other people and obviously knows the pop business well. I guess that in some of us Joni-people, who have a fairly sensitive emotional barometer, the barometer did not really register a couple of the songs that she had written for the pop scene; but that doesn4t mean that they weren4t beautifully delivered. It was a great experience to listen to her close-up; and with Jeff opening it was just a lovely evening. In the break in-between the two performances we went into the garden, now lit with candles and torches. I have to say that it was only as I woke up next morning that I realized what a thoroughly enjoyable evening it had been. I admire Steph and Anita for making so much out of their lives; they really make things happen. The other event that I had gone to Cambridge for was Steph/Anita-related as well. On Tuesday night, they were invited to my college to give a talk about their project on Olympic Women. With what seems to be a characteristic entrepreneurship they run a project about the first women to participate in the Olympics; they tracked down all those first participants who are still alive and interviewed them (plus Steph went swimming with two of them; the story of how one of them, well in her nineties, took a dive in the shallow end of the pool was hilarious: still a pro, she came out of it completely unscathed but everyone else was about to have a heartattack); they played some of he interviews to us, showed us film footage never seen before and shared some pretty fascinating discoveries about the events which I won4t reveal here. Again, my admiration for Steph and Anita for setting another landmark; and another night that was over before I realized how great it was. Am already looking forward to the prospect of Dave and Robin playing the Conker Cabin in September next year. I4ll be there for sure (well almost sure...!) Enough from me here; I hope everyone is well and that I4l find time to read and post some more. I miss you all!
