In rummaging through some memorabelia this weekend (for a friend's 60th birthday party), I came across my 1969 yearbook from Stony Brook - one from the year before I graduated! I must have bought a copy from a senior - don't know why.



Anyway, I had recalled the stories of Joni having performed at Stony Brook with Tim Hardin - rather a famous (or notorious) event 
here on the list - but I had not attended that concert. I was oblivious to Joni's existence until the aformentioned birthday boy 
turned me on to Ladies of the Canyon in 1970.
Anyway, there was a two-page spread of photos in the yearbook (three nice ones of Joni and one poor one of Hardin). 
I would be willing to post them to the proper site with the proper references. 
Not sure about the best approach here - whether to scan them, etc. 
Les - would you let me know whether and how to proceed with this ?


One thing led to another, and I have uncovered a few additional points of interest about that concert. 
First, the concert was held on Saturday, October 19, 1968.
The chronolgy on Jonimitchell.com suggests it was held in September 1968. 
That information can/should be updated to reflect the correct date. Can someone get this to Simon (I do not have his address)?
Below are links to 3 editions of The Statesman - the Stony Brook newspaper. One advertises the concert. The second contains
a review of the concert (including a description of the audience's lack of etiquette and Joni's response). The third contains some 
additional commentary about concert etiquette etc. All three serve to substantiate the date (and some of the lore).

I had a hard time finding the needles in the 20 page haystacks, maybe

Attaced are?the photos I referenced. One is upside down - I don't know how to fix that.

Another friend who was at the party advises me that one of Joni's songs serves as the intro to that yearbook (Specula) and that there is an abstract of Joni in one of the earlier pages.

I will look for that and get back with details.

PS - by way of rounding out the music scene picture at Stony Brook, the concert atmosphere was less than genteel, to be sure. However, Jefferson Airplane was so grateful for the reception they received when they first came to Stony Brook (which I believe they claimed helped them "make it" on the East coast) that lore holds that they came back and played for free the next year or two.

Just working off the top of my pointy head, I know that Big Yellow Taxi charted high for The Neighborhood (an English band) and of course for Counting Crows not too long ago. Matthew's Southern Comfort had a big hit with Woodstock as did CSNY. George Hamilton IV broke the top ten for Country Singles with Urge For Going. Judy Collins also charted with Chelsea Morning. I don't know any other BSN's that broke through the charts.

That being said, there were quite a few 45's issued with Joni covers but I don't know that any of them made a dent in the charts.

And give myself lashes with it for being such a lame-o covers guy this month...first I was late with Volume 112, then I never got around to doing the write-up about it (but it got plenty of downloads, so thanks for that), now it's the 18th and I'm 3 days late with my mid-month Retro edition.
